Everyone hears the dialect they're most used to as "accentless", regardless of how strong the accent is. Those Chinese speaking something barely recognisable as English? In their heads they sound similar to how you hear yourself.

Unless you study linguistics, and train your ear, you cannot hear what you, and the people around you truly sound like. You can hear the differences in how people speak, but cannot discern why they sound different.

You also hear a false version of other accents, with the differences emphasized, which drowns out the subtlety. While A Briton may have absolutely no idea how to tell a Boston accent from a New York one, it will be immediately obvious to a New Yorker that a Bostonian isn't speaking the same as them. Shit, Canadian and American accents aren't immediately discernible to those outside America, without having extensively interacted with, or studied, them. Same with New Zealanders and Australians. Yet the residents of these two countries will hear the differences more clearly and may not understand why foreigners cannot.

The concept of accentless English is nonsense, as the language has evolved for so long that no individual dialect can be defined as "correct", with the others derived from it. Most dialects will share something in common with an archaic form which the speakers will use to claim their dialect is the "true" one, but all dialects are also roughly equally different from this archaic form as well.

In short, what is familiar isn't necessarily superior.

Its kinda true though for the north west in the US. The dialect spoken here is the most "neutral" English, by and large. As in the least amount of slang, and the most dictionary, along with no drawl, and clear enounced syllables.

Thats not to say its some perfect English spoken here, not at all. But when agencies and schools look for English translators and ESL teachers, on average the highest payed ones come from the north west.

Not sure I get these limits. So they all apply?
Seems pretty arbitrary to not just go by total lines or whatever. Like when shared web hosts allow 100mb of disk space, but only 10mb per mailbox.

Find a VN that surpasses any of those limits, and someone willing to translate it, and they may change. The file and row limits are for performance reasons so we strongly recommend staying within them (and ideally ~10K rows per file); the total size is a hard limit.

Everything you did for the "VNTL community" you did it wrong.

Stick with what you can do. Find a group or a real translator and stick with the technical aspect of things instead of trying to do everything by yourself and end up releasing garbage.

Human translations get bashed everytime. Even people with JLPT1 get covered in shit for every tiny mistake they make. And for a good reason, because quality matters.

What is "properly", "real"? Is that another one of those ingroup-outgroup separating buzzwords? Think about that carefully... Also, to adopt a similar saying, "translators don't just fall from the skies." You may not see value in what we do, but given that there are many others already reading VNs with MT and need to setup everything to do so, even if this translation is pure MT (and it most definitely isn't) it would have value to them for it easily accessible by installing a patch.

Not Cudder, but if people are so upset about his work, why not offer to help correct his English instead of bash him?

VNDB and /jp/ both want more games translated, and at the very least Cudder has the tools and desire to start. After everything's been extracted and passed over at least once, it could be given to a 'native' who would touch up the story and make it 'better' in English.

To put it another way, how can a non-Japanese be sure any translation is accurate in the first place? We assume the translations like Ib, GA, and KnS, and are correct, but there's no way to actually know. If we can't be certain the stories are 'accurate' then why do we still read them?

It's because what is important is getting a good story. The readers want a story that is gripping, engaging, and compelling. I'm not saying we should sacrifice the original meaning and intent of the story, but that the story should be written in a way that will best reach it's audience.
Take, for example, Panty & Stocking. Panty was not nearly as crass in the Japanese dub as in the English one. But, similarly, when showing P&S to my English friends, almost all of them prefer the English dub. Why? Because the humor fits theirs, because 'Repent Motherfucker' fits so much better than the Japanese phrase, because the translators were able to faithfully adapt the story across cultural lines. You'll find similar examples in FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, and other 'hit' series in the English community. It's not the 'accuracy' of the translation that made these series great, it was the quality of the story presented in English, which reflected what the spirit of the Japanese writing in a way accessible to the English audience.

So, basically, why not have Cudder extract the raw text and translation, then work together to revise the story into something everyone can enjoy? If we do this, we can encourage more VN translation while also improving the overall quality of the VNs available.

Because Cudder doesn't want that. Cudder wants attention. Every single one of his "projects" ends up in spam basically (see this very thread, or the previous milky holmes necrobumping that lasted months).

Cudder is all about insane spam, "we", "RWI", "RETrans International Corporation" and Anonymous translators that nobody ever heard of or seen posting anywhere.

Once upon a time, years ago, people did work on his translation projects. Cudder trolled them by fucking with their translations (for the lols, he said) and then simply overwriting them with machine output. He doesn't want a quality product. He just wants attention.

I have no problem with properly translating (what most weeaboos call "localizing") something. In fact, I agree with this documentary:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUYlqLlbix0

However, you can't fix up machine translation. You can fix spelling and grammar mistakes, but if the translation itself is wrong, then you're just polishing a turd. This is exactly the sort of thing that requires human creativity to be true enough to the original *and* understandable to an English speaker. We'd need some pretty advance natural language processing AI before this is possible with a machine, and frankly we're nowhere near there yet.

Actually Cudder, my post was an opportunity for you to address some of the issues presented in this thread in a constructive way. Many of the posts here, along with their photos, construct a solid argument against your (or whoever/whatever is translating for you's) intent and ability as a VN writer. You haven't directly responded to these criticisms (most of it was re-framing or a mix of red-herring, subjectivist, and straw-man), which isn't helping your position. Instead of encouraging an endless session of 'yes it is/no it's not because I said so', why not post some of the actual translation process? For example, show some of the Japanese lines and how they were translated into English. Showing a small, unidentifiable portion of text will not harm any projects you are currently working on and can help counter posts like this: >>10521636

Reputations for being a bad translator are not given because one is 'new' or does not ascribe to an 'old culture', but because the quality of the work is sub-par. This is exemplified by MangaGamer, especially in their early translations. Their translations for stories like edelweiss were poorly written, full of grammatical errors, literal at best, and caused their reputation to sink. They have begun to combat this by releasing better translations, such as KnS, and their reputation is improving as their quality does.

Additionally, while it is true no one wants the /exact/ same translation of a line, the variations on most lines are subtle enough that a competent editor can blend them with minimal effort, and is part of any writing process.

But, if you are unable to address the points raised in this thread in a reasonable way it only fortifies their position. Why not work to better your image? People's positions can change, especially if presented with evidence that is hard to refute.

The quality is not our primary goal. Increasing popularity of VN is. Currently there is not enough of them being translated, and while the ones that are, are "high quality", what the outsiders see is most of the ones they want to read are not. If there were many more translated, not necessary to be high quality, just easy to install, enough to catch the curiosity, then there is more interest, bigger audience, more who will want to learn Japanese to read the original, more who will translate... it drives growth.

True. And YT is popular in part because of the volume and diversity of content available, and the ease of access. I don't even have to go look anywhere else for music anymore; it's all there, ready to listen to (or download for later.)

>Though using that logic, you could put out 100% machine translated games and -someone- would read it.
I don't disagree; there's already a sizeable population reading VNs with MT, so if a patch is easier they'll use it instead. But the difference in effort there is much smaller, so perhaps the value gain isn't great, although starting from a base MT'd script and improving it by replacing the mistranslations with correct ones could be a huge timesaver --- certainly not all the lines are going to be correct, but every one that is is time saved from needing to do it manually. It's easier and faster for most people to read than write. Even better if the MT can *learn* from the corrections and race ahead to apply them.

>>10554138
The short and obvious answer is because we had a translator who wanted to.

Coming up with a story to fit is not easy either, and that goes away from translation and into "VN remix" territory.

And WTF is wrong with MF? First they make me do this >>10547277, now they've gotten rid of the stupid non-mouseover hiding (good) but move the info to where it's ALWAYS hidden when the filename is long enough... meanwhile leaving that very appropriate space for it blank! How bloody hard could it be to make filesize and download count another column like modified date, or even easier, put it back to how it was!? This would've been straightforward to implement as a table like >>10544815, but instead the "web designers" chose to use an OL plus a ton of DIVs and CSS to make things look like a poor imitation of one. Browsers automatically align columns in tables and by default content doesn't get cut off, but the idiots who wrote this probably worshipped the "tables are bad" church. Websites that make these sorts of stupid changes for no good reason probably have excess labour they need to use just to keep them employed, but they should be let go. The fact that they're deliberately making things more complex and convoluted adds to this "so we can have things to do and be paid for" crap. Another troll thread by Cudder. Another failed "translation".

Having someone who is both proficient in English and proficient in Japanese is not exactly "elitist". Japanese can be learned in about 2 - 3 years. It's probably about as elite as being a car mechanic, there is no huge payment or certification required, and there isn't even a test to pass to become a VN translator.

The real problem with machine translation is that it is just really bad at present for Asian languages to English. The reason it shouldn't be used for public distribution is out of respect for the author's work.

The reason you translate something is to spread ideas, thoughts, and stories from one culture to another. When a machine translation does not actually do any of this the end result is that you:

1) Fail to carry over those ideas.
2) Potentially prevent others from ever carrying them over.

So the basic problem here is that you aren't giving anything to anyone. It's that you're giving nothing and then potentially discouraging future translations that manage to carry those ideas over.

Yes, we all know that you are a troll and that you don't care about VNs, but I think it's pretty disrespectful to take a script an author spent a significant portion of their life writing, and then tear it apart and display it in its worst possible light.

I urge you to abandon any machine translation initiative.

However, a crowdsourced translation project is not at all a bad idea for these titles. Making a platform where anyone can translate and then synthesizing it, that sounds like a worthwhile endeavor.

But this machine translation business is malarky.

>being a car mechanic, there is no huge payment or certification required
Of all the comparisons you could make, you chose one of the more heavily regulated industries... Google "ASE certification". Manufacturers also have their own. I won't rant more about the auto industry here.

>The real problem with machine translation is that it is just really bad at present for Asian languages to English.
That's why there's significant interest in improving it.

>1) Fail to carry over those ideas.
The world is not black and white. There are degrees of understanding.

>2) Potentially prevent others from ever carrying them over.
This is the same circular argument they always make, but it makes no sense at all.

>So the basic problem here is that you aren't giving anything to anyone.
Maybe not to you. In which case you're free to make a better translation.

>but I think it's pretty disrespectful
I think it's pretty disrespectful to complain about someone's less-than-perfect efforts, done out of his free time and of his own interest and enjoyment!

Your argument basically is this: you shouldn't translate if you're not good enough. To which i ask, "not good enough for WHO?" You also seem to be implying that no one else should translate something they want to if there already is a translation, even if they can do better than the existing translation. This is the old culture's way of maintaining a monopoly on a particular VN's translation. The usual counterargument of "wasted effort" is also bogus: any effort to make a better translation, no matter how incremental, is not wasted if it will be appreciated.

They are hands down the worst translations of the VN scene has ever laid its eyes upon, with the only rival worthy of mentioning being the initial Edelweiss translation.

People would take you a lot more seriously if it just weren't for the fact how you diligently defend these utterly terrible so called translations.
And while you perhaps don't want to trash talk your clients, you certainly don't have to praise them. There is a very sensible option available to you that's simply to not say much of anything on the subject.

You don't hear DC/Marvel saying that blatant tracing, let alone blatant tracing with a laughable tiny pile of stocked images, makes for good art. Even though they have their fair share of artists who does just that.
While they prefer to not really speak of it all, if you pester them enough about it you might make them throw out some arguments as to why they employ such artists, such as meeting deadlines or whatnot. If you insult their artists personally, one might slip up and say something like how artist X is actually a decent person, their work disregarded.

But you don't see them defending the shit at every chance they get. Or almost at all for that matter. Because they know when shit is shit, and they don't pretend otherwise. You on the other hand defend truly sub par and awful work, no matter the quality at hand or how many people point out why the quality is shit.

If that's what you want, use a text hooker and save its output. Good luck trying to insert it. But today, even if someone had an existing translation already in that form, reassociation won't be 100% accurate and takes significantly more resources than inserting a translation in the right format.]

>why do you have to make things so complicated?
It's complicated only because you want to expose yourself to that complexity. RWI hides that complexity from you, but you chose not to use it.

!FH4JP? He's a client, not part of the core team. Here's an example that might be relevant: I can either quickly go to Youtube and download some music to listen to in the car, or wait until I get home to search for the highest quality version available and spend hours tweaking the audio system to get the best sound for it. In the end I get far more value from doing it the first way, so that's what I've chosen. The audiophoolsphiles are going to say how "shitty" the quality is but it doesn't matter to me, because I am satisfied.

Also beware of review biasing. The ones who are fine with the translation are more likely to read it and move on without saying anything, meaning the majority of the feedback comes from those who hated it.

>> No.10586733

There are notable flaws in your example.

First, you are equating quality of media compression to quality of the content. Overly compressed images, video, and audio cannot compare to low quality content (the actual visuals, sound, text). Because a translation is necessarily becoming the content of the work, it's quality is far more important than if you compressed the voices with a bad codec to save space. If your music on youtube only had fan covers that could not sing in tune, would it still have the same value?

Second, in the situation where both a high quality version and a low quality version exists, it is not more difficult to obtain the high quality version. Your example explains the pains that it would take to listen to high quality music compared to music found on youtube. There is no youtube of visual novels, you need to download and install the game and any patches for both cases. No one is going to choose a low quality translation if a high quality translation exists.

And it doesn't matter if it's not fully MTed, the thing is, it's bad to the point where people ask themselves if it wasn't done by Google or some ESL Malaysian ``translator''.

Downloads don't mean much as well. I downloaded your patch twice out of curiosity.

And the sad thing is that Cudder will never change.
People will keep contributing with quality projects and Cudder will keep spending years to release machine translated garbage and then spam it for months.

It is not about quality but perceived value. A "high quality translation" may take 10 times as long, or may not ever exist. I am probably much older than you so I say this from experience: Enjoy what you can with what you have now, because you may not be able to in the future.

>>10586769
"almost everywhere" meaning your little elitist groups? Couldn't care less. As I said before we'd be very interested if you can consistently get this level of quality or better using MT only, but we're not aware of any free solutions that can come close. Compared to manual translation MT has an insane speed advantage; all it's lacking is accuracy. Maybe current systems are 50-60%, but do you want your VNs translated in under a week for 50-60% accuracy, or over a year for maybe 95%? Maybe the latter, but improve MT to 80%+ and the tradeoffs start changing.

I am. What you're describing sounds like retirement... which is still over a decade away for me.

One thing we're very interested in is combining/choosing among multiple MT engines automatically. The difficulty is coming up with an accuracy metric that doesn't require human intervention or supposes the existence of already "perfectly" translated reference text (unlike BLEU), but similarity/back-translation might work; if 10 different MT engines all produce the exact same output then there's a much higher chance they're correct compared to if they all give something different, and we can rate translations that way/mark the high variance ones for further manual translation. That avoids the expense of developing our own MT engine... should be fun.

You've been trying to do that for how long again? 2 years? 5 years? "Masses" doesn't mean malasyan nerds barely speaking english. Even /jp/ expect at least a bit of quality, your bullshit never had any place here or anywhere else in fact. Just look at this eyesore of a thread. Where are your "masses"?

And the sad thing is that nothing will change in 5 years when you'll release another one of your critically acclaimed projects: it will be the same unintelligible pseudo-engrish garbage and you'll keep spamming the same thing about how MT is the future for months.
