How come canned coffee (and weird vending machines in general) haven't caught on outside of Japan? It's not like the fast-paced caffeine-guzzling lifestyle is unique to Japanese society...

In so many ways this is true. They had mobile internet and realized the benefit of email over SMS, they use the infinitely superior YYYY-MM-DD date format, and outside of clapping at shrines they've mostly eschewed religion.
But then in so many other ways, they're completely fucking retarded, which is why they're dying of colds and getting molested on trains.

Also for OP's question, there is no need to make machines that keep drinks warm (although it would be very clever to have the radiator of machines that keep drinks refrigerated be what warms up the hot drinks), because you can go to any convenience store or gas station and purchase fresh brewed hot coffee, or canned cold coffee.

>> No.10597094

Maybe because most Americans have either Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks close by at almost any time and of course going to one of those places if much more of quality experience than getting canned coffee from a vending machine and in vending machines here in America most people want soda or energy drinks. Canned coffee just wouldn't be popular enough and people everywhere else don't see vending machines as anything else beyond that boring machine that dispenses drinks.

Canned coffee does not seem to exist where I live, in southern CA, except for one exception.

There's a canned mocha/vanilla sweetened coffee that I've only ever found at some of the vending machines at my local community college campus; I think the name is Columbus Roasters or something. It's pretty good and I've looked at department, grocery, and convenience stores nearby to get some off campus and no one sells it. I think it's fairly new, like a year or two.

I just recently ordered some UCC because, amusingly enough, when you search on Amazon for "canned coffee" UCC is like the second result that pops up. It's also the only actual canned coffee that Amazon sells.

UCC is actually quite good. It's not flavored coffee, only sweetened and with milk in it, so it's got a more normal coffee flavor. I like it a lot. The cans are too small though.

I really, really like coffee of all kinds, hot and cold, flavored and black, so I was really excited to find cold sweetened coffee in cans I could use instead of crappy energy drinks on campus. But other than those, they just don't seem to exist outside of Japan, at least in the U.S.

It sucks because canned coffee is wonderful.

If it's what it says it is, a double espresso shot with some milk then what is in there is more caffeine than a usual latte which contains one by default no matter what size it is. Bigger only means a more filling drink, not more coffee. A lot of people seem to not realize this. I don't think you would really want to sit back and enjoy a cold canned coffee the same way you would something fresh and hot anyways. The Japanese inn we stayed at had some vending machines, convenience stores sold them and merely made you push "yes I am at least 20" on a screen. No ID checks.

It varies by place. Some areas have cards you need to register for to buy cigarettes at vending machines, for example. It's not universal, though.

Also, ID checks in general are far more lax. Police will really never crack down on underage drinking as long as it's so socially accepted, and so it's easy to find somewhere that will just sell you alcohol. Plus, if you're foreign, they'll just assume you're of age, even if you're pretty young.

Anything is better than paper filters. Coffee has flavorful oils that get removed by paper filters. A press is by far the best way to go, but a wire mesh filter will work in a pinch.

Do you fresh grind your beans? If you're using pre-ground it won't make much difference. Once a bean is ground, it begins to dry and no amount of vacuum sealing will stop the process.

Buy whole beans and get yourself a nice little grinder to go with your press. Never store coffee in the freezer.

You won't notice much at first except that your coffee seems stronger and richer. However, after a couple weeks of fresh ground pressed coffee, then go get a Starbuck's. Suddenly it will taste like someone melted a brown crayon in hot water.

I don't think you understand how modern plumbing works. I also don't think you've ever seen my house.

I'm not saying the water is pure. However, given a choice, would you drink water from a multi-filtered and treated tap or from a pot of water that has sat stagnant for a month, then heated.

Keep in mind that coffee machines don't boil the water. Killing germs/bacteria in water requires 8-10 minutes of full rolling boil.
