It's a mark, but not a birthmark. It's the result of a magical ceremony that the protagonist's sister did so that he gets popular with girls in order to conquer his target of affection. It works as a sort of affection meter, and the more attached to a girl the protagonist gets, the closer to red it gets. It has all sorts of implications, and actually ended up not being as stupid as it might seem.

Speaking of which, I'm finishing up Kanae's route and just started her epilogue. Solid route with many good moments and a cliché but well executed scene to solve the problem at hand.

They never really touched up much upon it directly, just that the protagonist can't get too close to other girls if he really wants to get into Kanae's pants (incidentally, being nice actually literally locks you away from the choice of rejecting them during their confessions. There's a bunch of things related to the ceremony, though. I assume there will be more info during Meguri's route, which is initially locked and you need to do the other 4 routes first. I've only done Kanae's so far, but I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Maina and Aoba.

I think for a lot of actual hikkis, it might hit too close to home. Most of them probably have some pretty deep scars associated with their lifestyle, and a game that tries to address it in a way that's relateable for the player might just be too painful.

There's this I've had for a heroine I'd really like to see in a setting like that, though: A bright and cheerful girl who comes to check up on the hikki protagonist once in a while, but doesn't really understand his situation too well. She earnestly wants to help him out however she can and make him cheer up, but she's way too naive and oblivious. She'd have scenes like complaining about how dark his room is and pulling up the blinders, which would make the protagonist panic because he's afraid of people being able to look in. I'd like to see a heroine like that some day.

Yes? That's like saying, "Is there a market for Japanese-translated English novels?"

The Japanese make some great porn, but English-language visual novels are better as novels. They embrace the "novel" format whereas the Japanese tend to embrace the "manga artwork" aspect more. Analogue: A Hate Story feels like you're reading a real book, and a damn good one at that. It would be a science fiction bestseller if it was published as a printed novel instead.

Japanese visual novels are just porn with words. Which is fine, because that's what they aim to be (and they do a good job at it).

>Why are protagonists always shit?

Just my little understanding in the grand scheme - short repeating the saying about it caters to the buyers (doesn't deter them enough stop buying), I think it's just that much harder for the writers to do so. It's difficult as it is to get well-written heroines which is the main selling point, not to mention we can only see a well-written MC with substantial text devoted to his monologue (+ action feedback). Some will likely find it boring reading self-improvement sort of dialogue.

In the opposite example, you have flipping awesome MC like in Nitro+ Hello, World, where it's obvious where the effort is focus, leaving heroines nothing more than a tag label.

>> No.11671017

That's part of my problem though, even in the case of bland protagonists, i find that there's a very large quantity of time spent on pointless thoughts like "today was really fun" that get repeated way too much.

I know that these games cater to "betas" so to speak, but for me it's difficult to understand what the heroines love about the protag, making the relationships feel forced, thin, and baseless.

This can get really annoying. I find too much of a VN (especially in simple moege and charage) is based on the protagonist's thoughts and narrative, when most of it should be about the heroines. If they're going to write a shitty MC anyway, I don't really care what he thinks. I just want more interactions with the girls.

>That's part of my problem though, even in the case of bland protagonists, i find that there's a very large quantity of time spent on pointless thoughts like "today was really fun" that get repeated way too much.

This may be down to pay structure, aka word padding. I believe the writers are pay per word, so the industry has developed sort of accceptance on relative level of tolerance of stock lines, if you will. I think in this area, normal (text) novels are far superior since their (pay) motivation isn't really aligned with word count.

See this is what i don't understand. It's not that the personality is not defined, it's that it is practically nonexistent. Perhaps the industry assumes the majority of readers to be so plain that they can identify with such a protag.

Plainness is not a "mold" that you can fill with whatever traits you wish the character had, it's a trait in itself that can't be removed.

I've been playing Qualiaffordance, by SHELF. For those not in the know, the game's fully animated - Like School Days, but more consistently and without the ugly cel-shaded fill-ins.

I'd say: At first, I thought it was excellent. I played through Miki's route, and thought it was a sweet - If a little shallow - love story that was actually rather cute.

Then the game completely loses it's shit at the end.

She turns out to be the chosen priestess of a cult, a la Mirai Nikki, and you have to help her escape. It ends in a massive shootout, and with the protagonist going into hiding for ten months. All this in what was previously a simple love story.

Honestly, I much, much prefer cool protagonists - Or at least competent ones. Shirou from F/SN is kind of a moron, but Shiki was a pretty decent character. The majority of Nitro+'s protagonists tend to be extremely cool, but I especially liked the Kamen Rider PC of Vampihazard. (You could even name him!)

To be frank, a lot of eroge protagonists are worse-off than I am. Some are frankly pathetic. Innocent Grey has cool MCs, but they tend to be kind of destined for heartbreak.

Ayakashi by Crossnet had an excellent protagonist, but that VN was basically shonen fighting: the visual novel. Still great, though.

I've always felt that a lame character shatters the illusion. If VNs are meant to be escapism, I'd rather be a cool guy than a useless beta, you know?

It's sort of like SAO's protagonist: Overpowered he might be, but it's easy to understand why the girls like him. Compare that with Accel World's protagonist, who always seems to be insulting the reader's intelligence - Given that he's a useless fat fuck who's treated like a harem lead.

It's insulting, to be frank. I'd rather aspire to be like Kirito than to be Haru. When I think of the kind of protagonist I'd want to be, I don't think 'I want girls to love me for who I am'. I think 'I want to be the coolest guy ever.'

Alt. Chronicles 01 is pretty fucking shit as the only halfway decent thing on it is Chicken Divers. TDA00 is utter garbage. Rain Dancers is like the prologue for a story that's never been written, officially at least. Fuck if I know if Wei Luxin has published a follow up in those phone books he put out at Comiket.

Alt. Chronicles 02 was quite a bit better. TDA01 was actually fairly good. Adoration was a pretty good age-style comedy based on the Eurofront cast.

Alt. Chronicles 03 middling, I guess. TDA02 was decent but not quite as strong as TDA01. I couldn't stand Resurrection personally but this was also around the time I began to really dislike Miyata Sou's art.

Still haven't really read Alt. Chronicles 04 despite buying it. Haiburu was 10/10 best thing age has made since before the TE dark time. War Ensemble caused some autist on that /m/ run wiki to sperg out about it so I guess it could be pretty good? TDA03 apparently delves a bunch more into Takeru and Ikaruga and what not. Last Divers is a sort of sequel of Chicken Divers but set in TDA.

And we don't want your shitposting here go back to /vg/ , if we wanted to talk about VN's we wouldn't do it with people who can't even understand the original language of the VN itself

Those "shitposting" are essentially one guy who blogs his playing progress and a bunch of people telling him to stop, which no one does that here. Tell the janitor or mod to take care of that guy.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

So the new heroine is basically the antagonist? Sure why not.

Stop responding to blatant trolls.

Also, people in this thread need to stop spoonfeeding people. On top of that, when you post your impressions on VNs, explain them with actual details so that others can try to relate to your perspective; avoid trying to make a dumb meme out of some scene you came across when you're only 15 minutes into your first playthrough.

There hasn't been either of those instances in this thread though.

Just finished playing Gaia. This probably has the best characters of the entire Venus Blood series. Story-wise it doesn't feel like it deviates too much from the usual fare though.

I feel like playing something a bit light hearted before reading Electro Arms so anyone have recommendations in that area among this months releases? Currently considering Ensembles new game.

Oh yeah I should play it now that it was patched.
I know better than to play an unpatched Venus Blood game.
Also I didn't even notice Electro Arms was available, I'm behind these days

Natsuki route of Futagoza done, this was seriously a case of fool me twice, shame on me, so fucking similar to Ili's end in owaseka, now a grave for Tesla.
Expecting good things for Ao's route because I want to know what comes from these two in the end.

This glare makes my dick tingly. More heroines need to have this kind of facial expression rather than just the usual grinning like they're a Downs kid at Disney World.

It certainly isn't difficult Japanese. You can have Japanese and English text on the screen at the same time, so in a way, I would say it's the easiest Japanese VN to read for an English speaker that's still learning Japanese.

>> No.11679404

>>11679326

They should always make Japanese text optional. I'd even buy their games in that case. Well, assuming I have't already read them and/or they aren't bargain bin nukige, Knowing MG I'm pretty sure asking for both is a bit too much.

I'm bumbling through this right now. For some reason, they went back to the slow levelling speed of Abyss but left the enhanced versions of all the Activity skills from Frontier, so stat-boosted squads are now utterly OP even at level one.

They also nerfed the twin dragon swords, despite being completely useless in the first place....there's a few odd changes like that.

But hey, the cast are great and it's better written than Frontier was by a long shot.

>> No.11679789

Yeah the cast of Gaia, specifically Miria and Titi are really great. Protip: Don't pick hard for your second playthrough because it is just way too easy on new game+. Oh well, guess I'm stocking and getting ready for berserker mode in my next runthrough then.
