Cool, a Higanbana thread!

I know it may seem like we've made unnecessary delays since the patch was originally supposed to be released a few months ago. However, the changes we made since then will allow for a much more enjoyable experience.

As of today, we have what will hopefully be our final builds. After a tiny bit more testing, we will be ready to release them.

Please expect to enjoy Higanbana - The Second Night within the next couple of weeks!

>>11868390
Higurashi was a masterpiece, you can't really compare the two. This is no mystery either, and the only remotely scary chapter was the second one. But I love Higanbana for what it is. It actually has less flaws than Higurashi or Umineko. It's no masterpiece, but it's great at what it does. I may be a little bit biased, though, as I love anything featuring elementary school kids, especially if the atmosphere/plot is serious rather than silly. There is one thing I hate about Higanbana, though. That annoying and repetitive sound of children playing on the playground. What the hell was Ryukishi thinking? I wish I had a less repetitive equivalent to replace it with.

As for Higurashi being scary, well... I don't like to talk about it because that topic tends to attract fans of the anime adaptation, but Higurashi is pretty damn scary even when you know what's actually happening. Even things like the second half of Watanagashi-hen, arguably the less violent episode in the series, makes me feel very uneasy. Especially Satoko and Rika's disappearance... The feels...

(Appropriate image attached.) There is a good reason for why Marie's new clothes are the way they are, and this is explained in the first chapter. She only wears these clothes in certain parts of the story — for most of the time, she wears the same outfit that she wore in The First Night.

>>11868390
Higanbana is not a mystery story. I know some people insist that the supernatural events that occur in the story are caused by humans, but those people are reading too much into it. Higanbana is actually fantasy.

As for horror, it certainly has scary/creepy vibes. It's hard for me to say how it compares to Higurashi, since the two stories evoke slightly different styles of horror, but Higanbana certainly has its fair share of grisly moments.

I like Takeshi Nonomiya because he reminds me of Yasu.

They were both butthurt kids with a massive power. Yasu had the bomb, the guns and ten tons of gold. Nonomiya had all the bullies on his side before he realized it. He only wanted to take revenge on that girl by himself, but the other kids thought it was fun and shit got out of hand.

Something similar happened to me when I was around his age. There was no suicide, but I lost the best friend I've ever had. I regret it to this day. The worst part is that I had a crush on his tomboy loli sister, and she hates me now.

Why does every character think "she must be an upperclassman" when they see Higanbana? Marie and Nonomiya are supposed to be 11. Hell, part of the reason Kanamori decided to kill Marie was because she would become a middle schooler next year and he wouldn't be able to control her life anymore. Why did they think Higanbana was an "upperclassman" when they are in the highest possible grade? I don't get it.

How would you rate R07's settings, /jp/?

Umineko is probably my favorite. A closed off island is always cool, but it's even better when you shut it up inside a cat box and look at it from the future. It creates a strange atmosphere I don't know how to describe.

In terms of atmosphere, though, Higanbana is the absolute winner. It may be because the mood never really changes, but I find its atmosphere incredibly immersive for some reason.

It reminds me of when I was a kid. Elementary school is often portrayed as a happy, fun place in Japanese media. But it wasn't really like that. Even if you were never bullied, you still felt tired and depressed sometimes. I have hazy memories of that time, and I assume most people do too. The almost psychedelic atmosphere of the novel, along with the weird art and blurred backgrounds, recreates that feeling of haziness perfectly.

Hinamizawa is a VERY charming village, objectively better than anything in Umineko or Higanbana. But the creepy, suffocating vibe it gives off depends on the murders and the perspective of whatever character the story is focusing on, so it doesn't really have anything to do with the village itself. The cicadas are still a great touch, though.

I love silent places where time seems frozen, they make me feel safe. Hinamizawa at the end of Tatarigoroshi-hen is a great example of this. Dead bugs everywhere, an awful smell of rotten eggs, and a complete silence. You can wander around the village for as long as you want, nobody will disturb you.

The last part of EP4 gives off this feeling too. Battler is the only survivor and is free to do whatever he wants on the island for an entire day.

Third graders are like 8, aren't they? Marie definitely looks older and taller. She may be an airhead, but her level of maturity is that of a 10 year old at the very least.

All the characters seem to be in the 10-11 range. Also, the fifth chapter implied that Hikaru is considerably more mature than the really young kids (1st and 2nd graders I guess). There wouldn't be much of a difference if he was 8 or even 9, and the teacher wouldn't even try to have a talk with him if he was that young. And finally, the type of bullying we are shown is pretty twisted and psychological. Younger kids wouldn't even realize they can humiliate someone in such ways.

But I guess it's up to interpretation.

>> No.11869218

>>11869207
She looks very small in the manga, that's probably why she is that young in your mind.

But I don't think the artist knew what the hell he was doing. It was terrible in every possible way and the art was just plain bad.

It apparently says that Marie is in the third grade in the manga — or at least it does in a scanlation. I don't have a copy of the manga where I'm currently living to verify if the translation is accurate. Whether or not details in the manga are considered canon is open to debate, though.

Also, all the characters aren't necessarily in the same grade. It could be that Hikaru is in a higher grade than Marie.

I thought she was going to be a nice character. I actually sympathized with her until she started doing creepy shit. Bitch's fucked up.

I understand how cute kids can be when they cry (pun not intended). I also understand how someone with an humiliation fetish would find that sexually arousing. But you'd have to be an extremely fucked up bitch to actually lose control over your actions and do something like that in real life. Hell, simply by feeling the need to "control yourself", even if succeed in doing so, means that you have problems of self-control completely unrelated to pedosexuality, which is a completely natural attraction that can make you a really good person.

I'm not fond of male kids, but I almost cried at the end.

She makes it clear that she doesn't fall in love with cute kids, only with their bodies. She doesn't even feel bad for what happened to that one. It's the EXACT opposite of what real pedophilia is all about.

Higanbana isn't like Higurash/Umineko. It's not a mystery...it's a horror setting, where the supernatural simply exists without any need to question it.

There isn't a single narrative arc, either. It's a series of separate stories connected by a shared setting and some shared characters.

I will say, though, that the final chapter of Second Night does give a good sense of closure and really feels like a final chapter (I'd love it if he made more, though).

Are you one? You can't really be that sure of that. At least not more than a pedo is.

The meaning of the word doesn't really matter. It's possible that most people that love children in a romantic sense feel like I do.

But I wasn't even talking about that. I was just complaining about how normies will read this VN and think "wow, she's a total pedo because she wants to fuck kids. And she's even more of a pedo because she is an asshole". That's why I wanted to clarify what it means to be a pedophile and how it's not about sex, regardless of its official diagnosis based on laughably flawed researches.

If she wasn't a crazy sadist, she wouldn't be a bad person at all. In fact, she would be a much better person than you are. Being a pedophile doesn't have anything to do with being a pervert, a sadist, someone who struggles control him/herself, or someone that doesn't absolutely love kids. That's what I'm trying to say.

I don't have a persecution complex, it should be obvious how unfair and willfully ignorant most people are about this subject. I guess I'm not a "pedophile" because apparently one is not required to love kids to be one, even though that's exactly what causes the physical attraction in the first place. The only episodes from the 1st night that I didn't absolutely love were the fifth (very solid, but every character involved is an asshole) and the fourth (just passable). Everything else was amazing.

The second part had some great stuff (Aya <3), but the first and especially the third were way too cartoony/pointless for my taste. I liked them, but they could have been replaced with something more serious. The fourth was pretty good, but it made me feel like Hikaru's chapter. Renoir was very interesting and I liked that. I felt really bad for the murdered kid. The fifth was too short (this girl always gets short chapters), but I loved it. The plot twist combo was great but it left a bad taste in my mouth because it was just too sad. I don't really know what to think about the sixth. The youkai was interesting, but her powers were far from subtle. It was WAY too magical for my tastes. And the new kid didn't grow on me at all, but I'm glad we got to see Yukari-chan again. I'm about to read the last one, which will probably be very good. I doubt it can beat the second one, though.

If I had to choose a loli gf, it would be between Aya and Midori. They were really cute.

Honestly, the humour kind of ruined it for me. The First Night is very dark, with close to no breather, and that made it a very powerful read. In the Second Night, there is three chapters acting as breather, two of them making fun of the whole series.

Ryu07 generally succeed in mixing serious and humorous elements, like what he did with Higurashi/Umineko, but here he lost it. For example, when the entire series is focused on the dark tales of a school with a ruthless and morally ambiguous main character, you don't write a story where she appears goofy and weak. It kind of defeat the whole point.

The same thing, all the jokes at the expense of Midori almost killed that character for me. Why would you feel the need to do that, Ryukishi? Seriously? Making a butt joke of one of the most tragic character of the First Night?

There was some very good chapters in the Second Night, easily rated among the best chapters of the First Night, but it doesn't excuse the poor humour.

She never was popular. It was all an illusion created by the youkai eating her soul: the cramps and the bruises she gets comes from when the illusion isn't perfect, and the blows she receives from her bullies aren't filtered enough. Nothing is real, but truth is, this illusion is the only thing worth of anything she has left.

That's tragic, anon. 8.8 on the tragic-o-meter.

After just re-reading the chapter I have no idea how I missed that.

How can I replace the music from night 2 with the umineko music in the troll upload of night 1? I got used to before and now the change is nothing me. It's worse than the original music patch for higurashi.

I just want to share this absolutely amazing video. It reminds me of the WTC motion graphics. It's full of spoilers, though.

Sometimes I like Higanbana even more than Higurashi/Umineko. This video made my fucking day. I'm glad to see that it has some fans.

That wasn't too bad. How would you react if a DEEN adaption of Higanbana was announced?

I hate DEEN so much dude
I don't think they have ever EVER made a anime that was above 5/10.

It should be relatively easy to adapt into a decent anime. It may even be good! But then again, it's DEEN.

Even if it's complete shit, it will make the series more popular. That means more fanart, hentai, and maybe even good doujins!

It would be great news for me. I just hope they don't ruin it with bad voice actors or precocious puberty.

It's not really THAT amazing, I just didn't expect anyone to give a shit about Higanbana, so I'm glad that somebody actually took the time to create this. Aya looks cute as hell.

>Be on a date
>Main Coursh comes
>It's a huge steak
>Date orders a salad
>She's obviously jelly of my manly carnivorous tendencies
>She opens her mouth - "Wow anon, that's a big steak."
>Stare at her for about 5 seconds.
>A huge grin begins to form on my face as I utter the simple phrase...
>"For you"
>The tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife
>All of a sudden, every man above 6 feet tall stand on their feet and applaud
>The roar of the big guys hands is deafening
>The door of the restaurant bursts open as Aiden Gillan himself walks up to me and gives me a briefcase
>Then, a plane crashes through the opposite wall of the restaurant (leaving no survivors, of coursh)
>Tom Hardy strides out of the wreckage, Bane mask and all, and walks up to me and says "Open the Briefcashe"
>I open up the case, and there is a simple card on plain paper inside, attached to Christopher Nolan's Acadamy Award.
>On it is written "For You"
>I understand what is needed from me now
>I face my date, my fingers hooked through my beltloops, then pick her up and start furiously fucking her
>All the time she is screaming "Big Guy, Big Guy!"
>I look over to Bane and CIA and smile...
