Its tough to join the marines now. Sure, "anybody" can join but they put you on a long ass waiting list before you can even get to boot camp. The military is really cutting back on people because they only want educated and dedicated people to enlist.

Things will change back to how they were before if theres another conflict that starts up but ever since Afghanistan and Iraq ended they want to get rid of the trash.

Well then you're probably just a Japanese buff. An otaku is someone who goes great lengths to satisfy his hobbies, spending almost every cent he has buying things that relate to those hobbies and/or spending most of their time doing those hobbies. So an anime otaku watches anime almost nonstop and buys discs of his favorites and can talk a long time about anime. A game otaku buys and plays almost every kind of video-game he can get his hands on and plays games nonstop. That sort of sense.

Think otaku as relating to the word "fanatic" in English. It's not just someone who holds an interest in games, anime, or manga. It's someone obsessed with those things.

The more you know.

I think most Gundam series are actually fairly good with representing how a chain of command works, even if there are lots of exceptions (newtypes/innovades/whatever) to the rules. Most of them show or describe multiple aspects of the decision making process, like organizing enormous space battles. It all struck a chord for me.

Battleship Yamato was fairly good too, at least concerning how the ship was run and maintained. I'm not a Sailor, but I'm pretty familiar with all the working pieces inside a warship, and it surprised me with its accuracy.

You're making a good decision, I can tell you that. Maybe not the best, but a good one. There will be times that you regret enlisting and dedicating four years of your life to some perverse war fraternity when you could be a civilian getting smashed every single day and making a fool of yourself without having to worry about disgracing an entire organization. Commitment is the most important value you're going to learn about, and the Marine Corps demands a lot of it.

I understand most people want to live a quiet life with no big risks... but why try to dissuade those few who want to risk it all? Sometimes you can't move forward without risking something (everyone's life is different).

Also there's nothing wrong with dying for what you believe in. It's your own personal death/life anyways... in the end no one will ever understand 100% of it except for you.

I'm the Marine from earlier. If I could give you a piece of advice on joining the peacetime Marine Corps, it would be to have extremely low expectations, and to find an MOS that was not dependent on government funding directly.

Things like being a tanker, or a tracker, or an LAV crewman would be pretty bad, since there's no money to send them out on field operations. They can barely afford to keep their vehicles running well in a lot of cases. Infantry would be bad, again, because field ops cost money. Ammo costs money. And obviously, you're not getting deployed, which means you'll be doing a lot of PT and extremely stupid things to pass the time and to keep yourself trained.

Some things I can imagine that prosper in a peacetime, and a recession-oriented Marine Corps are admin (really just dependent on personnel) and any side of logistics, whether it be warehouse clerks, disbursing, paperwork bitches (MIMMS clerks). Motor T is always needed as well, and you don't have to worry about deploying and getting blown up by a three hundred pound bomb everyday.

>> No.12156333

Again, Low expectations. You will save a lot of headache and stress by resigning yourself to not caring about Combat Action Ribbons, deployments, meritorious boards and all the other shit that goes along with a wartime Marine Corps. Not that the Wartime mentality isn't important, but everyone has trouble adjusting out of it, and the Marine Corps as a whole is really struggling to find its place right now.

If I could offer anyone advice on joining the military in peacetime it would be to go for the coastguard as they actually have a real mission when not at war. Maybe the Navy as well. Otherwise if they want to and carry around a rifle or want to learn a trade then maybe enlisting in their state's national guard or reserve would be a better choice so they would be spared the suicide inducing life of active duty, that is putting up with stupid formations, mandatory briefings, being surrounded by complete idiots 24/7, dealing with petty bullshit at every level, having to come in on saturday to pick up cigarette butts around your dorm, etc. If they want to play soldier they could volunteer for deployments or transition to active duty, but going the other way around is much more difficult. Once you sign the contract for 4 or 6 years you're fucked.

Im sorry but I can't see the advantage to joining the Marines at this time, especially in regards to quality of life based off a few friends I've spoken to.

Gigs why are you deleting your posts, are you trying to play some sort of silly mind game or something?

I really want to know more about this statement >>12156101 as well.

I know a service member who lied, assaulted NCOs, stole thousands of dollars of government property and did worse things but he didn't get caught. Does he deserve equal respect?

Do you think joining the Armed Forces is the only option for someone who wants to give back to his country or to build character and discipline?

It's not like things like that are condoned. As an institution, the military does not aim to better you as a person, but to make you conform to their ideas of what a good soldier/Marine/whatever is.

You see a lot of recruiting literature talking about gaining discipline, and I don't think that's wrong. Discipline is important, and I'd say most people in the military have some sort of exceptional discipline, whether it be professionally or personally.

I wouldn't say it's the only way, but it is an attractive option to do those things. It's a more straightforward option than something like being an EMT or a border patrol officer, which are both important services that build character.

Not everything I post is with malicious intent. I was legitimately curious as to your military experience, if any that is, as such a thing would be very pertinent to the thread. But if you're not comfortable with discussing such a thing I suppose I have to respect that.
