>Did you have the intention of getting a spouse ASAP knowing that it would lead to permanent living in Japan?
Not at all.
>How long after meeting did you guys get engaged / married?
About 3 years.
>Did you have a fancy wedding?
We haven't had a ceremony yet (got married in April). We're thinking of going to Hawaii with our families and having a very simple ceremony there.
>What are your spouses' friends and family like to you? Do you see them often?
They're really nice. My husband's family lives nearby, but they're very busy so I don't see them too often. I go over to help out at their business sometimes, though.
>Other than your spouses do you have other close contacts in Japan or do you have other gaijin networks there?
Not really. I talk with my Japanese coworkers at work, and very rarely make contact with the other foreign guy in town. But then again, I'm not really the most sociable person in the first place.
>How did you get your jobs in Japan?
I submitted my resume to a company while in the US, got an appointment for an interview, and just went from there.

I haven't tried it. 20 minutes later, they start playing techno trance loud muisc (they played a Hare Hare Yukai remix once). During this period of like 5 minutes(?), all the girls rotate around the bar/room to all the patrons for 10(?) seconds each. Play with their boobs, rub their bodies (no pussy, that's a no no), and then they usually whisper arigatou or something nice in your ear.

It's a really great time if you and your buddies are drunk. Only the next day you realize you wasted about 60 bucks just to play with tits for 5 minutes.

I'm living in the on-base barracks right now. Once I advance to the next paygrade (hopefully on tomorrows test, we'll find out in a few months), I'll be able to live off base. When that happens, the Navy gives you OHA (or something like that), which is a lot of money, which you use to use to find an apartment. Basically, the Navy is paying for your utilities, rent, and basic food stuffs. It's monthly based rent, just like the states

No prob. I'm here all night, just chilling and drinking beer.

I have an American-bought laptop, on my ship I use the Navy's computers. IME works just fine on those. JApanese computers come with a Japanese keyboard.

If you don't really NEED a Japanese keyboard, IME works just fine.

I heard somewhere that most Japanese people use romaji input + IME anyway. Like it was only specialty secretaries and paralegals that learn the direct kana input method. Not sure how true that is, or if I moved there how important it would be for me to learn direct kana input.

Many towns don't have subways, so walking, biking, and the bus are the only options if you don't have a driver's license. I don't live far enough from the grocery store to warrant taking the bus (plus they don't come very often), and I discovered that after not riding a bicycle for some 15 years, I have actually forgotten how to ride one, so I walk.

My apartment is about 15 minutes away from the grocery store if I walk fast. I try to get 2-3 days worth of groceries in one go so I don't have to go every day. It can get heavy, and it's rough on rainy days or very hot summer days, but it keeps me somewhat active, I guess.

I don't really see how being from a country with a high GDP per capita helps. The average Norwegian obviously isn't wealthy enough to get by without working, so in the end, all the matters is your ability to get a job there.

Japanese student exchange programs are pretty much non-existent outside of shitty Asian/Japanese studies degrees, and I doubt we have strong business ties to Japan either (unless you work in the seafood industry). As for JET, Norway doesn't participate in that. And getting into English teaching in general is kinda hopeless unless you're a native English speaker or got a degree in English. I mean, would you invite a German to your country to teach Spanish when he has no formal qualifications?

There's always opportunities for people with skills and the ability to market them, but you're kinda on your own with that. Embassies tend to be a good place to start, though.

As a country, you don't want to be giving out visas to people who won't benefit your economy in some way. So you make it available to nations that could grant you something you want. Obviously education and ability to land a job matter, but getting a visa is another matter, especially in Japan.

And I don't see how being from a country with a high GDP per capita would make you any more desirable, all else being equal. The economy of their birthplace influences nothing, only the skills and competence the immigrant brings with them matters.

Well, most of those countries are ranked among the top countries in the world for people with higher education. They basically get a 50/50 shot at getting a free bachelor-level worker, something a lot of European countries are willing to pay for.

Germany looks like an exception here, but I'm pretty sure they're only that low because their education system focuses on getting people into trades rather than setting them on a one-track road to college, so they're still highly skilled workers.

Anybody here transition from a job teaching in Korea to a job in Japan?
I've been to Japan a few times and loved it.
I've been learning Japanese here in Korea. It's a lot easier to do here than in America since the grammar is the same as Korean and there's Japanese signage all over the place and a pretty good number of Japanese speakers at every language exchange I've been to.
I don't want to go to Japan to teach though; I'm thinking of getting CCNA certification or taking some MIT online courses to try and get an IT job, but I know that's going to slow down my Japanese studies.
If I'm gonna switch careers to IT in Japan I want to do it after a year as I'll have my student loans paid off by then.
What do you think guys? Doable?

I am going as a student in decemeber. Last time i was there was 3 years ago. Can you suggest any good places to live within tokyo? Share house or appartment group. I only need internet and enough room for a desk and a bed.
My school is near shibuya.

I'm real interested in applying for JET myself, but I have to ask: does the program cover the expenses of travel, room and board, or are you expected to pay for those things yourself? Graduated from college but haven't found any jobs, so I currently have an income of $0.00.
