By having a positive opinion of one exchange student and not caring how they act in Japan nor how they tint Western perceptions of people with an interest in Japan, you look away from the problem. In addition, it tints your perceptions of other exchange students - look up the halo effect. The perception of one trait or component as positive can tint one's perception of the concept or group as a whole, even against better knowledge. By letting yourself think "ah, she's cute" instead of looking into the problems that Westerners making fools of themselves in Japan cause, you're ignoring a problem that you could help to create awareness of. In the end, Westerners acting ignorant and pseudo-racist in Japan only serves as fuel for Korean propaganda, as zainichi presence in media allows them to exert an influence on anti-Western sentiment in Japan. The Western media, spearheaded by the US media, is in love with all news that paints the Japanese as racist and alien, and will proceed to use both the weeaboos and the anti-Western sentiment as Exhibit A in why everyone should ignore Japan and turn to Korea.
It might seem conspiranoidy, but spend time on the Internet, especially in places where younger weeaboos congregate, and you'll see exactly how far the chons are willing to go.
