Somewhat echoing this statement, rural Japan is (at least in my mind) the most "authentic" Japan you're likely to find. All the urban areas are heavily American/Westernized.

The time I visited Japan (just Tokyo) I was a bit underwhelmed really. It's just a cleaner version of Manhattan if we're being genuine - and I had trouble finding anything that seemed genuinely and originally Japanese. Almost everything in modern Japan is no different from Europe / America except for having funky moon runes covering it.

What happened to the good ol' Meiji days when there was a nice balance of authentic Japanese and foreign? ;_;

Just about the only "fun" and "real" Japanese stuff you're likely to find in a city is that one weird old guy that wears those clip-clop geta sandals.

Apparently polled research has revealed that the sound of geta-clopping is the most nostalgic piece of old Japan that still exists nowadays.

Smaller cities (circa 300,000ppl) are a nice mix of modern life and convenience but still have a "This is Japan" feel. It just differs slightly one place to the next. I lived in 1 such city and it's downtown area was insane, bars and shit everywhere. I lived in another city not very far, same population and it was way different. The only bar in that 2nd city would only get 4 people in it max. But the 2nd city felt more "Japanese".

I've just moved again to a small rural town and it feels exactly like what you'd imagine Japan to be like from anime set in the country (like OP's or say, Onegai Teacher or whatever) but to be brutally honest it's boring as fuck. The sense of community is stronger though but that's no different to country vs city life anywhere in the world.

If you speak fluent Japanese you MIGHT make a few friends from work who will ask you questions beyond where you're from and how long you've been there, and oh my, you're so good at using chopsticks.

A city around 100-200k is ideal, but really you're going to be bored out of your mind with anything smaller. Rural life means you might not even have an izakaya to kill a few hours drunkenly at. There are only so many rice paddies you can see before getting bored out of your mind. People will never stop staring and wondering how long you'll be there, since us foreigners are ultimately pretty transient. Matsuri's are pretty nice for the local flavor, but again, these are country hicks who aren't exactly practicing their dance moves as much as having to remember tradition once a year.

It works like the following:
99% of rape cases happen among people you know. Someone gets intoxicated, a man she knows takes advantage of her, and she feels uncomfortable making a fuss and telling people he raped her; she can't come clear with the fact that this guy she's known for a while just did that to her without even giving a fuck; she convinces herself that it's somehow OK.
The false rape allegations are the polar opposite, where a woman gets a furious hate for a man for some reason, and uses rape allegations to ruin his reputation.

So there's nothing weird about the fact that rape is both under-reported, and that often there are false allegations. By the way I wonder about that ridiculous 40% figure you have there; are those *proven* false allegations, or allegations that were dismissed because there wasn't enough proof? I don't understand why people would want to expand the definition of rape to include all of these things that never used to be rape. It really does no good for anyone. When you create a culture where rape is seen as the worst possible thing that could happen to you and when rape becomes such a vague and abstract concept that people would need to painstakingly analyze a situation just to determine whether or not someone was raped then it has reached the point of dangerous absurdity.

A person's reaction to many events are conditioned into their mind based on the expectations of their culture, and if you tell people enough times that sex while drunk is rape then they will believe this and experience as much mental trauma as their culture expects a rape victim to experience.

This whole thing is just creating victims and making people suffer needlessly. What used to just be a regrettable but not even remotely traumatic moment of poor judgement while drunk is now perceived as full blown rape and you've got people having panic attacks, developing PTSD, and just becoming mental and emotional wrecks as a result of this. Just look at some of the worse parts of Africa for a comparison of the exact opposite to see how strong the effects of cultural conditioning can be. Rape is relatively normal in some of these areas and most of these women have been brutally gang raped at least once in their life, yet mentally they are handling it far better than a western person who had drunk sex and became shut-in that can't leave the house without having a panic attack. If your culture tells you that you're going to feel weak and broken when you're raped then you're going to feel weak and broken and if your culture tells you that you should be tough then you're going to be tough.

UKIP is continuing to gain steam in part due to their not dancing around the issue of things like Pakistani rape gangs. Likewise, SD is a growing party in Sweden because a lot of Swedes are growing tired of the endless excuses for immigrant crime and the housing issues where immigrants are given priority over native Swedes for housing.

Far left and far right are both bad, but left wing policies have been in place and viciously and violently enforced for long enough that the far right is looking increasingly appealing for voters.
Hell, the woman who initially blew the whistle on the Rotherham sex gang? Fired and arrested.
