I think it's much, much easier to remove the 'edges and dents' in your pronounciation going from Western -> Japanese. Maybe because Western languages tend to have a broader range of sounds to begin with. Like, the only sound that I really had to learn for Japanese that didn't exist in my native language was the ""Japanese r"". Everything else in consonants and vowels was easily adjustable to be similar to what is used in Japanese.
