Well, that depends on how much do you care about actually knowing Japanese and fully enjoying the stuff you read.

If you feel like you can enjoy the VNs well enough just by using your method and don't particularly care about getting better at Japanese, then continue. (Same with the method some Fuwa heroes promote - learning some grammar and then reading everything with constant use of a dictionary for vocab.)

In my personal opinion both of those methods are bad. As for what you should do instead, I'd recommend you read something easier, which you can easily read fully without skimming. Of course I don't know what you're reading now, it's possible you're already at the easy stuff. If that's the case I'd say you need to clench your teeth and grind through the Japanese fully. It'll help you in the long run. Practice often, make logical steps in upping the difficulty of VNs you read and your reading pace will get better.
