It makes less sense because it's supposed to. A lot of the humor in the Japanese puns is them saying "slowly" when they should be saying the oppisite or outright contradicting themselves, like "run away quickly slowly!"

But "quickly run away easy!" isn't contradictory. To use "easy", it would have to be "easily run away hard!" or "difficultly run away easy!"

>>1492302
"Su" is from "slowly". Same place the "Yu" comes from in the regular comics.

Another pet peeve of mine is that "yukkuri" gets translated differently depending on whether the translator thinks it's an adjective, noun, or verb. You'll note that I use "Slowly" in all instances here.

For example the line in "Yukkuri No More" that goes "Slowly, Marisa stopped being a yukkuri" really should be "Yukkuri Marisa stopped being Yukkuri", or "Easily Marisa stopped being easy" to use the conventional yukkuri -> easy translation.

And yes, I know this was originally Chinese, so it's not the best example - but you know, he left "yukkuri" as is, in Japanese. He didn't use the Chinese word "easy" or "slowly". Why can't we just do that with the English comics?

>>1492345
Except that if you say "I'm running away from X easy!" people will assume you are talking about easy in the sense of "not difficult", not "at rest".

>Do not be a retard and think that 'easy' can only mean the opposite of hard

Do not be a retard and think that "at ease" is the default definition of "easy", when "not difficult" is its most common definition and that is how most people will interpret it.

And do I have to mention the English connotations of "Marisa is really easy!" ?

Just noticed why you have new there. Seriously. Knock it off. 'Take it easy' works better than 'take it slowly'. 'Easy' therefore should be used as the erroneous 'yukkuri' they add to almost all their sentences. And no, the joke is NOT lost when you favor 'easy' over slowly because doing something in an eased manner implies doing it slowly; not 'doing it easy' implies rushing or doing it fast.

And tacking 'easy' on to things made little sense in the first place.
'Slowly' only makes sense in the very few categories of speed rates. Like "giving birth slowly". However, "giving birth easy" also works (but doesn't seem to be appropriate, as it doesn't seem that easy at all).

Post 1371481:

taken from the 5th edition 広辞苑:
ゆっくり
1 動作・運動が時間をかけて行われるさま。急がないさま。「ゆっくりと

歩く」
2 時間・空間・気持ちなどに余裕があるさま。「五人はゆっくり座れる」

「どうぞ、ごゆっくり」

First definition is preferring to take one's time with moving and acting. Being unhurried. (your pick)

The second is having plenty of time and space, and to be able to feel comfortable. (my pick)

First defintition I would translate as 'slowly'. Second I would translate as 'Easy'. Do not be a retard and think that 'easy' can only mean the opposite of hard. From my understanding, a lot of the jokes involve the two meanings being used interchangably and also contradictions involved. Thus the only way to preserve this would be to find an English word that has the same double meaning.

Like I said, doing something 'easy' (for clarification, doing something in a relaxed, carefree manner.) implies doing it slowly. If you're rushing, you're not doing it easy. Doing something slowly doesn't necessarily mean doing it 'easy'. It could simply be a long, slow process like taking a final exam.

Take it easy is even a fucking phrase in English. For fucks sake why are you trying to change it?

It seems that you're translating "yukkuri" as "take it easy" there, and in several others.

>I suggest that Slowly can also have two meanings
Funny, that's exactly what I was saying about Easy, and I already showed that the English definition of easy works fine.

>correct translations
outside of the yukkuri context, I'm not saying that 'yukkuri' can't mean slowly. But their catchphrase, 'yukkuri shittete ne', has been translated as 'take it easy' for quite some time now. If you didn't know, that is a phrase in English. Why would you favor 'do it slowly' over the English phrase? Or are you saying that 'easy' isn't a valid translation at all? Going back to the definition I posted,
>having plenty of time and space, and to be able to feel comfortable.
That sounds to me a lot like
>3. providing or conducive to ease or comfort; comfortable: an easy stance; an easy relationship.
or
>2. free from pain, discomfort, worry, or care
>12. not forced or hurried; moderate: an easy pace.
Someone else even said that the first definition could be translated as 'easy'. And again, 'easy' assumes 'slowly' so the joke is preserved, but doing something 'slowly' doesn't necessarily mean doing something in a relaxed manner.

>> No.1493995

No, it doesn't work because most of the Japanese jokes are about them saying "Slowly" in ludecrous ways.

You're missing the fact that when words have more than one definition, people go with the first definition that fits - and when "easy" as in "not difficult" fits the logic of the scene better, they will go with that.

And the problem with that is that often the yukkuri are supposed to be saying something illogical.

"Get born slowly" while the mother is experiencing painful childbirth. "Get born easy" is exactly the logical thing to say here - AND THUS WHY ENGLISH SPEAKERS MISS THE JOKE.

Or - an Alice is raping a yukkuri. The victim shouts "Yukkuri shite ne!". "Take it easy!" - it could be one way of saying "lay off!" so the English readers assume it reads that way. And they miss the joke of the victim telling the attacker to "do it slowly!"

>> No.1494007

>ludecrous

>people go with the first definition that fits
Right, which is the definition I've been talking about. Since they say 'easy' practically like 'Desu', it shouldn't take long for anyone to realize that it's the exact same definition of 'easy' in 'get born easy' as in 'take it easy', even if someone doesn't immediately realize which definition to use.

>And the problem with that is that often the yukkuri are supposed to be saying something illogical.

You know, translation is never a matter of simple substitution, even with very basic sentences. Translating poems and jokes is a whole another level of complexity, and translating puns is pretty much impossible- you have to take the mood of the work, accompanying artwork and the whole setup, perhaps even the characteristics of target reader and other things into account, and hope to come with a suitable pun in the target language.

Yet you hope to improve the situation by simply replacing "yukkuri" in original with "slowly" in English. Think again.

"Slowly do it!" you used isn't really English. If you argue they are saying nonsence, so it should be translated as nonsence, then we could as well say "Yukkuri shittete ne!", or "Frog blast the vent core!".

In one of the darker parts of one of the darker and more mysterious woods of Gensokyo (where the food is digested) sat, on a log, two Yukkuris, of the common Alice and Marisa types. They sat. They sat so easy it made sleeping look like bicycling up Mount Everest on a penny farthing with a flat tire. They sat yet more, looking vaguely ahead, looking at nothing, thinking whatever great and strange thoughts a Yukkuri is privy to. One of them, the Marisa, drew an acoustic guitar from under its hat and began to strum, the gentle notes clear and strong in the cool night.

"A-a-are you going to Scar-borough Fair..." sang the Reimu, and the two did sing. Hidden by the gentle crooning of the Yukkuri, Alice of the Margatroid line sneaked nearby, her secret project tucked under one arm.

It would only take a few more stitches to complete. Here in the wild was the best place to test. Of all the Yukkuri she'd ever seen, not a one was in the shape of her own head. She'd seen a number of Cirno, a handful of eerie, unsettling Tewi, and even that one girl, the one who exploded into organ confetti when she tripped over a snail and fell on a bed of feathers. But no Alice. No Yukkuri for Alice. And every Marisa she'd try to keep kept escaping. Usually after eating all her food. No, the time had come to make an Alice Yukkuri to play with all the other Yukkuri. Alice could finally have some vicarious friends.

She drew the pillow-sized Alice Yukkuri, added a little extra stuffing, and sewed her back up. With a few magic words, the artificial Yukkuri shuddered to life. "Say after me," Alice said. "'Take it easy!'"

"Chake it eajy!" the Alice burbled.

"There you go." She squished the Alkkuri. "Aren't you the cutest! They'll just gobble you up! Now go--go and make mommy proud!" She set the Alice on the ground and it sped off to the stump Yukkuri. The Yukkuri sang away:

"I'm a cop killer, better you than me
"Cop killer, eff police bru-ta-li-ty..."

he Marisa ceased her strumming. "Hey. Bucephalus." It nudged the Reimu. "What's with that thing?" It pointed (in such a way a Yukkuri may point) at the impending Alkkuri.

"It is a mystery," the Reimu, apparently named Bucephalus, said. The Alkkuri pulled to a stop in front of the natural-born heads. It swiveled, sized each of them up, and leaped onto the Marisa's face.

"LEZ' GED REFRESHED!" the Alkkuri burbled with the volume and force of a cannon.

"Agggh! Getitoffmegetitooooff!" screamed the Marisa, who dropped her guitar and more pertinently began to run like a Yukkuri with a horny Alkkuri violently humping its headback.

"Clever Hans!" said Bucephalus. "You've been accosted!"

"DON'TTAKEITEASYANDGEDDITOFFFF!" screamed Clever Hans the Marisa. The Alkkuri was making terrible squeaking noises.

"I must act without ease!" Bucephalus said. "But in order to plan, I must burn, as Father Nodens before me." She packed a little Fine Greenery into a hand-rolled and toked as was demanded by fate.

Bucephalus sat on the stump and enjoyed Kind; Clever Hans ran sreaming around, the Alkkuri humping away. Alice was privy to this and this alone.

Casting aside the remnants of the handrolled, Bucephalus fetched the guitar, wound up, and smashed it into the Alkkuri as Marisa raced around. The Alkkuri burst into yarn and stuffing. Clever Hans fetched its hat and returned to the stump. "Damn was that uneasy," it said.

"I have yet to come to terms with my hatred of Alice of Margatroid," said Bucephalus.

"If she weren't already sterile, I'd push her down the stairs every time she got pregnant," said Clever Hans.

"Indeed. Were it up to me, I would suggest we forget the late unpleasantness through the taking of ease and the strumming of the guitar," said Bucephalus.

"Sounds like a party!" said Clever Hans. Bucephalus took the reins, and Clever Hans did sing: "Pan-American nightmare, ten-thousand feet fun fair..."

Alice took cover behind her tree and pulled Shanghai from her purse full of wickedness. She nudged her dolly awake; she rubbed the sleep from her eyes.

unlike other yukkuri, it was one that could never take it easy

if spoken to by another yukkuri, it would usually say "as long as you're alive, I can't ever take it easy"

truly, this kourin disliked other yukkuri
but what he hates the most is in fact his own self

because kourin has no eyes...

while he wore glasses it was just to hide his defects

There was a mute Meirin that was often bullied by her pack. She was tough, but no matter how much abuse she would receive she would not fight back and accept it all

There was also kowakourin (from above) in the forest. Many yukkuri tried to trip it by setting rocks in its path, but kourin would always avoid it easily. Alice and Patchu tried to bring down its self esteem by criticizing it, but neither could win in a verbal argument against Kourin. Eventually everyone avoided Kourin.

Everyday Meirin would be abused, particularly by leader Marisa who despises her lack of reaction.

Everyday after the abuse, unbeknown to the other yukkuri, Kourin would mend Meirin's wounds and bring her back to "their place of promise"

One day, lackey Reimu reported this to leader Marisa who decided to abuse Meirin in front of Kourin. She thinks that they'll get a reaction from Meirin this time.

Meirin was tackled, Meirin was stoned... Meirin was impaled by a twig.. and she finally died

Everyone laughed because the mute freak died.

"oh my... you assholes are really stupid, aren't you?"
Kourin spoke in a different tone for the first time.

The other yukkuri started their verbal abuse on Kourin, but he replied back by calling the other yukkuri thrash

Enraged, leader Marisa told her lackeys to kill Kourin

but you just don't mess with a blind master

with highly precise movements, Kourin dodged lackey Reimu's body press and revealed a kunai he has hidden in his mouth. (kourin is hollow and can store weapons inside him like Turn A gundam)

SLASH SLASH.. Reimu loses her eyes

Leader Marisa runs for her life. She thinks she can outrun a blind yukkuri. She runs and runs... and she trips on something. Excruciating pain runs through her body. Marisa has tripped on Meirin's twig impaled corpse and said twig has now impaled her too.

Nooooooooooooo!

Kourin prepares to harvest Marisa's eyes, but Marisa begs to Kourin to spare her eyes. She claims that she is a changed person.

"Oh really? if so I will forgive you. But keep in mind that I hate liars"

"Ssssure.. sure! Barisa will do anything!"

Deep inside however, Marisa is already plotting revenge against Kourin

"Very well then, close your eyes. I will free you from that twig"

No, I mean, is it a reference to something? Because I've seen multiple images featuring the same thing.

Short series I'm pulling from Futaba. This seems to be the first page. The rest are unambiguously marked.
There's also a new 33 page Alice&yukkurisa story. Seems to be a redoing of Yukkuri no More, but unless it continues there's no Alice mindrape at the end. Will post it in the next thread.
