Kohaku is my favorite character. I can't use anyone else effectively anyway. I started out with Akiha but immediately found I was better with Kohaku.

I play Miyako even though I suck with her. Real TYPE-MOON fans play with their favorite character and only their favorite character.

I've always had the notion that you should get unbeatable with one character and at least really good with another as a backup for some reason. I think playing with every character would just be confusing and difficult.
I initially liked Akiha but after fighting Kohaku a few times I found her cute and she made me giggle, so I decided to use her as my backup, but she soon became my favorite, plus I was better with her. I should practice with Akiha again sometime though.

I've fooled around with all the characters, but my style of play leans towards the speedier characters.

Dash instead of run is a must for me. Running throws me off and normally gets me killed.

At the same time, it does pay to experiment with all the characters, if only to see what to look out for in a match.

I use an imitation dualshock controller. Got it for something like $15 off ebay from Korea or something and it's really not bad in terms of quality. I've had it for about a year and a half maybe and have even dropped it hard/thrown it a few times, nothing is broken.
As for a character, even if you're using the keyboard you can still just pick the character you seem to like the best in general. Keep messing with them all until you can decide on one.

A good habit is to always block high if someone is jumping into you.

It's what you should always do period, but blocking low FEELS like the right thing to do most of the time...and you have to fight against that urge.

But what makes me sad is I used to be awesome with Warakia, and I suppose, not playing Melty + playing Touhou IaMP, among other things made me horribly rusty.

That's the trap all new players fall into (me too). Just because you win with Nero doesn't mean he's your best, he's just so GDLK against people without experience. When you eventually play good people you'll see how hard it is to win with him and wish you never bothered to begin with.
