Or should I give up pursuit of unlikely goals and focus on securing a simpler, more comfortable existence for myself and my family, at the risk of having to deal with the regret of what could he been?

For me, the hope of pursuing the ultimate goals in life is the only fuel I have left. At my point, the second option means death. A comfortable existence is just not an option at this point, so the hope of the first option is all I have left to keep me moving.

I chose the "risk everything" approach and my family eventually came around. Helped that I have succeeded in achieving my goals, at last. Did not help that it took almost four years. I'll second what >>16142297 said, but add that while it is one thing to feel like you held yourself back, and live with that regret. If you instead feel in your truest thoughts that it was your family (or anyone close, really) who held you back, that is an ugly feeling to have to carry with you forever. Don't let others hold you back. Only you should have the right to fuck up your own life.

It does, oh how it does. I think half the time I played RCR with my brother the game ended after enough mistakes lead to a full-out fight and we repeatedly killed each other and no longer had any money.
I was thinking of including that in this story at one point.

Really, I think the big thing is just to avoid getting paralyzed by indecision. You should weigh your options, to be sure, but you still need to take action even if the options available seem equally tempting, and even if choosing "wrong" can potentially have terrible consequences. Pick something and commit to it, even if it feels like you're randomly drawing your future out of a hat.

Sometimes thats just the way life works, and it'll get you a lot further than waiting for a golden opportunity or for someone to share some magical piece of advice that makes everything clear.

That reminds me of my experiences playing Battletoads with my brother and cousin. That game is incredibly brutal even if you are cooperating well with your partner (which was a rare occasion), so those games didn't tend to last long.

Reminds me of something me and my friends used to do in elementary or middle school. We'd play SSBM at his house, and we'd see how long we could play "happy family" with the characters until we genuinely and accidentally goofed up, which would then cause the fight to start.

I've been at it for six years (with an additional two years in between degrees working and NEETing it up) and a lot of the initial lustre of what got me into this in the first place has faded. It seems like a chore but I need to remind myself that I've actually achieved what I wanted when I first enrolled.
