16299733 No.16299733 [Reply] [Original]

It's been a while since I've seen ZUN's CDs discussed here. Let's fix that.

What's your favorite CD?
Favorite song?
Cover art?
What do you think about the direction of Maribel and Renko's story?

Pic related is my favorite cover art. I think it's the most pleasant art that ZUN has done.

Nice hips, Renko!

And I can't say I have a favorite song or CD, it's all just too good. I'm really glad that we got two albums this year. It was quite the treat. I don't think DBOA was that great to listen to, but I do think it had a pretty emotional story.

Very hard to say. Can't really narrow it down.
>song
Legend of Hourai. While it's pretty different from ZUN's normal stuff, I love how it sounds, and also the nostalgia that I get from hearing it.
>cover art
Gotta agree, CoSD's art is really nice.
>story
A LOT of zun's feelings and passion go into these CDs, and it really shows in the stories. The dialogue in the CDs feels so much more meaningful than the dialogue in the games. The afterword from ZUN is always thought provoking and genuine. As for the story itself, DBOA wasn't zun's best CD, but it certainly had a great story. It honestly was tear-jerking at the end.

MA would have been perfect if it didn't suffer from repetitiveness so much. Some songs are perfect and not repetitive, but too many are for it to be my favorite.

And I'd like to see ZUN come back and do some more Seihou arranges like Phantasm Machine again. Some tracks on DLFR and DBOA reminded me of it a little, it'd be nice to see some more come back.

>What's your favorite CD?
I can't really pick a favourite, but the CD song I'm the most obsessed with at the moment is "The Childlike Duo's Naturalis Historia". It's so great and really makes me imagine about Mary and Renko going on adventures while having fun. I really love the "Magical Astronomy" album in general too.

>Favorite song?
Same as above. Other good mentions are "Greenwich in the Sky", "Welcome to the Moon Tour" and "Hiroshige No.36 ~ Neo Super-Express".

>Cover art?
Retrospective 53 minutes.

>What do you think about the direction of Maribel and Renko's story?
It's very interesting and blends well with the CD music.

Speaking of cover arts, they often get forgotten but the Akyuu CDs have pretty art too.

How do you guys eat the albums? I've read somewhere you have to "listen to the songs as you read them" but my problem is: it only takes seconds to read one, while the songs take up about 4-5 minutes each. How do you do it? how am I supposed to do that?

Take the rest of the time to think about what the meaning of it was. It could be more complicated than you think, ZUN likes to play around with symbolism and metaphor and all that stuff.

Spoilers if you haven't read CoSD:
I would have never guessed that Children's Festival's dialogue wasn't actually an intro or anything, but instead lyrics. I didn't pick up on that until the afterword.

Anyone have any predictions for the story? I'm really hoping for more hints that Renko is Yumemi, but I'm not sure where it would go at this point. Renko and Maribel having hangovers isn't exactly that huge of a takeoff point for the next one.

I personally like ZUN's illustration style, especially the stuff in between EoSD and TD, it just feels so endearing and genuine. I can see why you wouldn't like it, it's all about opinion.

>story is irrelevant
This is where I have to disagree. The story gives the premise of the music, which is a big part of each CD. ZUN has it there so people can feel the music in a way more than thinking that it's catchy. Sometimes it's just the two discussing life, sometimes they're on an adventure, and sometimes it gets really emotional. It's certainly worth the read. Please consider it next time you listen to one of his albums.

A tie between DiPP, CoSD and NToJ

>Favorite song?
You serious?

>Cover art?
Either DiPP or MA

>What do you think about the direction of Maribel and Renko's story?
Kind of a convoluted story too be honest. Most of the time i don't really care about it.

As a side note what dioes everyone think about ZUN latest albums? In my opinion "Dr. Latency's Freak Report" was kinda weak. Some of the revisions of some songs have somewhat inferior instruments but having Eternal short-lived reign on a CD is pretty good

On the other hand "Dateless bar" is pretty good. I loved especially loved the song "Adveturer's tavern of the old world". I also liked Pandemonic planet even thought the bass is weaker than in the game version.

>> No.16304893

>>16304767
The story in DBOA isn't deep or anything, it just evokes emotion. It's a bar full of these lonely people who childishly claim to have encountered the supernatural. Some of them actually have, and some of them are lying, desperate to be accepted somewhere in their life. I think what makes it emotional is that once Maribel and Renko do the thing with the mirror, the bitter, almost hostile environment is immediately gone and replaced with childlike wonder and amazement. Some of them even cried.

While it doesn't really seem that emotional or anything initially, it was really powerful after reading ZUN's afterword about how he wanted everyone to be like children and that he desired to have that mentality until he dies, because he'd know he would have had a worthwhile life. It just hit kind of hard, I guess.
