Has anyone got some good variety recommendations for listening practice? Some shows I've watched so far and enjoy include Monitoring, Knight Scoop, and Suiyoubi no Downtown.

Try taking the N1 (or whatever level) sample quiz at http://www.jlpt.jp/e/samples/forlearners.html.. I did pretty well, but this is definitely harder than the real N1. I think my biggest problem rather than reading comprehension is speed. On the actual N1 I don't know how well I would be able to read the longer passages within the time limit.

Any tips for a JLPT self-learner, anons? I'm currently studying toward N4, and planning to take N3 mid-year. I know it's going to be a long road to get there, which is why I'm in the middle of creating a study plan, which is about 3-4 hours a day. Any recommendations on the study plan? (or mind sharing yours?) Currently, I'm just doing DoJG, core10k, and KKLC anki. I will have to insert reading/listening material to it since I'm still sucks at both of these, in addition to doing kanzen master.

Also, what are a good way to polish your writing skills? I saw website like lang-8/hello-talk, but I'm not sure how useful it is. Maybe I can just write anything daily in diary-style?

Never allow real content exposure (eg reading) to occupy less than 50% of your study time. It should be those other things that you try to squeeze in afterwards.
Having said that, of course you shouldn't ever skip a day of anki. The idea is to set the new card rate to something that can be got out of the way easily, but you might find a bit difficult with 3 decks on the go.

I don't know about the other one but I've been playing evenicle for a while now and I'm having a blast. It's actually fun and interesting so reading doesn't feel like a chore. I recommend it regardless of if you find it hard or not. That being said I find it pretty easy to read.

What's the fastest way to grind kanji for somebody who already has N2 level speaking and listening? My only problem is that I don't know how to read what I know how to speak.

For example, 弱い becomes 弱すぎる.

As for the kanji, it is often written both in kanji or in hiragana, so don't worry so much about that.

Seconded, but I feel like rather than shows, optimal listening comprehension training would involve podcasts/audiobooks simply because the narrative doesn't rely on or assume any accompanying visuals, and even more importantly, because the word density is typically so much higher.

I found some collections of podcasts here:

But I haven't yet found a reliable source for good, native-targeted narrated texts, especially fiction.

The audio supplements for textbooks like Tobira do have their purpose, but seeing as they're targeted at intermediate learners, the vocabulary and grammar is rather limited, the language not entirely natural, and the content not really that compelling.

One thing I did find in the CoR are books like "Read Real Japanese Fiction Short Stories" and "Breaking into Japanese Literature" (in the CoR) which, while also aimed at learners, do actually use native content. They're very good, but a bit to 'literary' for my liking.

So I'm left wondering, given the excellence of Japanese voice acting, can it really be the case that nobody in Japan is producing narrated versions of LNs (ANs, if you will)? Anybody got more info on this?

Two years ago I set the bar low with completing Flyable Heart in 11 months. I am back today to set it even lower. I finished the first Zero no Tsukaima LN in 9 months. I would guess that it is only 1/10th the size of FH, which makes it quite the underachievement.

Things I've learned:
VNs are much more compelling than LNs
Kindle Paperwhite is comfy, but lookups are so much slower than texthooking
Kindle Fire/Android App can lookup faster, but they can't handle conjugations, so the dictionary won't work a lot of the time.

The reason why it's important to keep the stroke order is to preserve the shape of the kanji and also to write it the most efficiently. The overall shape and position of stroke in kanji changes greatly when it's written as characters on a computer, the best example being 心.

Personally I just want an excuse to practice Kanji.
I do not expect everyone on /jp/ to care if they are writing to each-other or not.
There are many that do not want to chat, I do not want to chat, but I want to study Japanese as well, so if I waste my time by writing slowly sequences of kanji on DrawPile I feel way better than browsing any chan or doing nothing.
