guys, I've just started mahjong a few days ago, and I lack knowledge of "Hans". All I know is that is the reason sometimes I just can't tsumo or ron my hands. Anyone care to explain?

Pic is one of my hands that failed.

Memorize the one han for starters, make sure you have at least one and you can call Ron or Tsumo. And make sure you're not in furiten (http://www.sloperama.com/mjfaq/yaku/yaku.htm))

Pretty much. If you had kept it closed you could have called riichi and that's at least one han. Or instead of going for 2-3-4pin, go for another set instead of a run and get the two han all sets. Plus that pair of 6sou.
