The answer is, obviously, that kigurumi can be both. Also, cute and lewd aren't mutually exclusive and 'pure' is a rather strange property, imho.

Although it may seem obvious: the bottom line is that you should do whatever you want and try find people who think alike, but there will always be 'dismissive opinions' (for example "Oh, you're doing X? I don't know much about X, but it is basically devil worship, right?") about niche interests such as kigurumi. So don't take claims of 'people' who claim certain associations or stereotypes must always hold to seriously.

There is no reasoning with people who judge you without reasoning, so don't bother. You're part of a subculture now. I certainly can't claim to be perfect, but I do try to be realistic. Might help if I knew anything at all about makeup. Also, there's a big difference between a $1,000 mask and a $50 mask, with some people limited to the less expensive end of the spectrum, which is not so good for realism.

Makeup makes a big difference, as does pose (which kigurumi probably helps train). CoRoNa's one of the top female maskers right now, and a lot of it is down to having the mask fit and lit/makeup.

Discord has been pretty positive thing for me, before it I didn't even know about most kigus from my country and even had such coincidence that one lives like in two clicks from my crib.
jaypee has been slow always and there was even kigu board at 3chan long time ago and it didn't kill jp threads and it got killed instead.

I have been lurking in threads like fucking long time already but never approached any kigus in threads or followed in twitter, just stalked and so far I have enjoyed much more from this new social side of kigus. Even with discord these threads will survive just fine after all, these threads have become part of jp. Just my opinion of current status.

But I am quite picky, I don't like open mouth masks, even if it's just a painted on thing. The image of the mask also needs to have a closed mouth.
