The legend goes that she was suppose to share her elixir with her husband. Had they shared they would both become immortals. She became a god because she took all the elixir herself instead. We likely will never know which version of the myth ZUN picked, but regardless she did betray her husband. It's just that depending on the story version, she was worried about an immortal tyrant ruling Earth forever.

Makai as a concept is unusual because it is a Western idea that gets twisted into a Japanese mythology.

It is basically what WOULD have been Western Hell, except since Japan already have their own domestic Hell, it is redundant. So instead it just has many Western style demons but not much else. It is sort of the kind of world were JRPG demon lords live, with the original religious context completely removed.

I guess you can think of it like Mordor of LotR. it is a psudo-evil place that doesn't have any link to Japanese mythology.

Junko was basically near the end of her rage when the game event occurred. The fandom pretend that she stayed a psycho, but in canon she was likely already burned out by the time the protagonist defeated her. In the end the Moon was never really her enemy, and she knew it. She just needed to get her frustration out on the player. Remember that she voluntarily ended the siege on the Moon.
