I read an interview with James Heisig where he mentioned learning to speak Japanese by playing with children, somewhere up in the mountains. How could you even make this stuff up? So when I heard the man was in Tokyo, I knew I had to ask him about it.

Because here’s the extent of what I learned from children by teaching grade school in Japan for several years: The word for lunch. How to say “I’m so cold.” How to say “I’m so hot.” How to grab your teacher’s penis and exclaim “bigu sticku.” How to insert your fingers up his butt in a move known as the kancho. Beyond that, children typically ramble about some toy or cartoon or playground game. They’re not going to coach you on how to make hotel reservations or order up another plate of gyoza. The idea that one could learn to speak from them is insane. They can’t even use the language decently themselves. That’s because they’re freaking kids.

I met Heisig at a writer’s workshop. He seemed a pleasant enough fellow, and a fine teller of grandiose stories. After listening to his well-polished tale about singlehandedly inventing a way of learning Japanese characters that millions of Japanese folks had never thought of in their thousands of years of history, I finally got a chance to ask him, “How did you learn to speak it?”

“I played baseball with the kids,” was his reply. “Up in the mountains. In Nagano.

“You played baseball?” I asked. “With children?

“Yep.

“And that’s how you learned to speak Japanese?

“Sure. Children are the best teachers.”

Now, that sounds reasonable. Everybody nodded. But it isn’t reasonable. It sounds good, but it’s actually nuts. Children are the worst teachers. They make no damn sense.

You know, over the years, I’ve asked many people how they learned Japanese, and their answers consistently fall into one of two categories. They either describe a systematic method pursued diligently over the course of several years, or they make up some convenient bullshit because they don’t really want to respond to the question. I looked at Heisig, and had my answer.

Matt's theory sounds plausible but I feel like people who read and have poor accents can fix it, because I think anyone past the age of the critical period are going to have similar results no matter what order they try to learn and develop their accent. And if you point to people with poor accents who learned via reading, that doesn't contradict my claim. These people often just don't care about their accent. I did say "no matter what order they try to learn and develop their accent", so I'm specifically comparing people who care about their accent.

I know his counterargument is that people who read early develop their own incorrect pronunciation which requires more effort to overcome than if they had just learned it more properly initially. But then my counter is that people who read will learn the language faster and have more time to devote to accent and listening. It's all just theory. Again, he could be right but I see no reason why it's likely.

my opinion is that only listening is also a risk to your accent. if you don't know what the sounds are supposed to be, you're going to mishear a lot. obviously there are things you learn from listening like contractions and sound changes, but there are also cases where if you don't know what to listen for you're going to think you heard something else
but most importantly it doesn't fucking matter because the risk isn't that big in the first place, if you use a healthy balance of media it's not an issue

honestly i don't know if that's enough but here's the game plan i would follow with that budget
set aside $1800 and jump on the remaining slot in matt's $100/mo patreon tier for 18 months, as a bonus you'll get to skype with him monthly and he's native-vetted so it's like practicing with a native except he also is a language learning expert
with about $400 you can buy enough copies of rtk to eat for at least a year and really get that kanji inside your body
finally $720 will get you 18 months of lingq's plus tier and that money goes to steve kaufmann so what else needs to be said
you can spend the remaining $80 on compelling content, you're not going to need much for those first 18 months

Anyone else feel like caffeine negatively impacts their learning?

The tolerance I've developed to it because of consuming it for such a long time means it really doesn't do anything for me anymore, no matter how much I drink... but it's worse than that, because I've also developed a dependency on it meaning I have to drink it just to feel normal, and as soon as the initial effect (which isn't even noticeable anymore) wears off I feel really tired and can't concentrate properly. Basically, whereas in the beginning I felt normal most of the time and got a rush when I drank caffeine, now I feel tired most of the time and only feel normal (for a very brief period) when I drink caffeine.

Think I'm gonna try quitting and see if my energy levels balance out a bit. Hopefully I don't go from feeling tired most of the time to feeling tired all of the time.

I didn't find that it worked that way for me. I had somewhere close to 2k hours of anime under my belt when I started learning Japanese, and all I got out of it was a few "oh, so that's what that means" moments when reading Tae Kim. Nyaa is the best place to check (search the Japanese title, not the English translation/romanization).

A lot of torrents will say they have no seeds when they actually do because all the tracker info was lost when old Nyaa died. You can check the column to see how many complete downloads there have been of each torrent since Nyaa was resurrected which may give you an idea of how well seeded they are, but only way to tell for sure whether a torrent is seeded or not is to try downloading it and leave it running for a few days. If you haven't managed to download any data for that torrent after a week or two then it's probably dead.

I looked at Heisig, and had my answer.

quote this page: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/nounparticles

>*Warning: This may make things seem like you can replace any arbitrary nouns with 「の」 but this is not so. It is important to realize that the sentence must be about the clause and not the noun that was replaced. For example, in the last section we had the sentence, 「学生じゃない人は、 学校に行かない」. You may think that you can just replace 「人」 with 「の」 to produce 「学生じゃないのは、学校に行かない」. But in fact, this makes no sense because the sentence is now about the clause “Is not student”. The sentence becomes, “The thing of not being student does not go to school” which is complete gibberish because not being a student is a state and it doesn’t make sense for a state to go anywhere much less school.

So what makes that example different from this one, also from the same page:

lmao, imagine rigorously grinding Japanese textbooks, grammar rules and Anki cards for multiple hours every day year after year, ignoring all temptations and fun so you could reach your goal if only a second faster, only to discover on arrival in Japan that despite your good test scores you can't actually speak Japanese. Then you hear that some people just had fun. Yes, fun. At first they sucked, but they didn't care because they had fun. They improved slowly, but they didn't care because they had fun. And then before they knew it they had reached fluency, because they had fun.

られる is the modern auxiliary verb for making ichidan verbs potential/passive, and also for 来る which is its own irregular category. It's supposed to go on the 未然形 and the 未然形 of 来る is こ. The passive/potential form is こられる, and this morphed into the potential form これる along with godan verbs.

If that's what you mean by reason. I don't think there's any logic to it being irregular to begin with.

turns out they just changed their site's name LOL
they were so silent about it and that Japanese "thanks for your continued support" in Western context sounded like a goodbye

literally just say that you changed your site's name in the announcement you autists

>> No.19849835

>>19849819
nope, "continued" would be wrong to use in a goodbye.

I dunno, the definition given on jisho seems to match less of "all day sex" and more of "crazy, messed-up sex"

I could see the "all-day" from the first definition, but not necessarily.

>1. absurd; unreasonable; nonsensical; preposterous; incoherent
>2. extreme; senseless; reckless; wanton

>3. disorder; confusion; mess; wreck
