This is a Japanese language learning thread for people interested in anime, manga, visual novels, light novels and Japanese video games.
If you have not read or listened to Japanese for at least 2 hours yet today, please leave and don't come back until you have.

Audibooks.
Play audibook at the same time as you read the book. Set audioplayer's hotkeys for pause and quick rewind for when you want to listen to the sentence again.
After you finished a chapter by this reading+listening - upload that chapter onto your mp3 player and listen to it during your commute, now without text .

for starters the cornucopia in OP-guide has "graded readers" very short, easy to read stories that come with the audio-recording
https://mega.nz/#F!3gVW3Shb!8qXZG8BF8vMGxCF6EEuMmQ!y0FEQRBI

It is somewhat expensive though as I couldn't find japanese audiobooks (朗読) on torrents so have to buy them on audible.co.jp (they used to be free-to-listen however much you want with a monthly subscription but now this subscription only gives you 1 token a month to get one book a month with).
First month of audible is free, meaning you get one book for free for registering (they took 1 yen of my card for registration) so try that out or just look through catalog before registering.

By the way - is anyone here using Perfect Dark? Do they have 朗読 there?

I too have struggled with some books and VNs I tried first, crawling at a slow pace and dropping them until I found ones that engaged me, making it easy to spend entire sat-sun - 12 hours each with minor breaks, just reading.

"Compelling" is the most important part of that "Reading compelling content" meme people keep repeating here - a single weekend spend entirely with compelling text can give one more progress than a year of anki-droning.

>But i still feel like I'm not ready and heard good things about tobira..
Tobira is entirely in Japanese. If you're not ready for reading news articles on the internet then you're not ready to learn about Japanese grammar in Japanese. I don't even see what the point of Tobira is since if you can understand it then you shouldn't even have any need for it.

I know that this kind of goes against the DIY approach of /djt/, but does anybody know of any good Japanese language classes I can take online? I'm open to enrolling as a part-time student at a university somewhere, but I'd have to be able to take all the classes online. None of the schools within driving distance of me offer anything but basic intro classes.

The reason I'm asking is that I'm finding that I just don't learn very well without a structured curriculum and I have a hard time remaining motivated without some outside force giving me assignments and imposing deadlines, so I figure enrolling in an online program would help keep me engaged.

The point is there's 0 benefit in wasting time trying to understand English explanations of connotational differences that are likely going to be awkward, incomplete, or even flat out wrong. Especially something as simple as the original question - if you just know that both phrases mean the speaker likes something, the difference in how they are used should be readily apparent by the time you've finished a few chapters of yotsuba or something.

I've read way, way more than this and don't understand nuanced differences between anything. The thing is, as you understand more, the number of things you don't understand continuously becomes less and less.

At the start, NHK EASY is gonna be overwhelming because you're gonna see like 80% new shit. After a few months, you'll only be seeing like 1-3 new words/Kanji a day using it. Then when you move up to something like TBS NEWS you'll have to start all over, 80% new shit. After some months of that, you'll be back where you found yourself, only finding a handful of new words/grammar things a day. What's miraculous is that every day you're gonna be able to do slightly more, and spend more time with Japanese using less effort. Brain's gonna get tired of the bullshit and either A) give up B) get good.

No matter what, there's gonna be a wall at the start. You've just gotta chip away at it until you're not gaining much from it, then find the next wall and do the same to that one. That's all language learning is. Take it from an ESL who STILL finds weird shit I don't know in English from time to time, but I just don't argue with it anymore.

If you've been doing hours of reading every day you should already be aware of a notable improvement with regard to intuitive comprehension compared to when you were in the textbook phase. Shit you're right, I do have far better comprehension as far as grammar goes and I have less of a need to translate into English assuming I know all the words.

Not him but I hope you're right that I'm understanding things better and just not realizing it. I know I've heard from multiple people that it took them 8-12 months of reading and listening every day for them to really start to feel the nihongo and understand most of it intuitively in the media they were consuming so I should wait until then before complaining. Thanks dude you're the best.

>In order to test the potential learning effects derived from watching subtitled media, a group of intermediate Spanish students of English as a foreign language watched a 1h-long episode of a TV drama in its original English version, with English, Spanish or no subtitles overlaid. Before and after the viewing, participants took a listening and vocabulary test to evaluate their speech perception and vocabulary acquisition in English, plus a final plot comprehension test. The results of the listening skills tests revealed that after watching the English subtitled version, participants improved these skills significantly more than after watching the Spanish subtitled or no-subtitles versions

You don't have 220 kanji left, you have literally every Kanji that ever shows up in a game, book, sign, show, etc. I realized how pointless "chasing the jouyou" was when I realized A) how easy it is and B) exactly how often non-jouyou show up all over the damn place. I think I stopped caring around 1500 "seen" Kanji and just flashcarded the odd word here or there because I was seeing the most common stuff often enough that simply reading was its own SRS.
