No brain: Learning Japanese because wow ota-cool! such an enlightening culture, so kawaii, so anime, so elegant, so polite!

Pea brain: Learning Japanese because of otaku media and hoping to go work to there before discovering the toxic work/social culture and the fact it's just as shit as anywhere else in the developed world.

Normal brain: Not learning Japanese because there's no practical day to day use of it in your country.

It's extremely difficult to find LNs in official digitised format when pirating. Japanese pirates will actually take official digitisations, convert them to images, and then share them in that format without sharing the source because they think images are better for some insane reason.

Most of the digitisations out there are unofficial ones made by using OCR software on image scans so you have to be very wary of the inevitable errors resulting from that.

If you're reading/listening less than 5 hours a day, you aren't getting anywhere any time soon. Your ability grows exponentially depending on how concentrated your exposure to Japanese is. Someone who does 150 hours in a month will get much more gain out of those 150 hours than someone who spreads them over the course of 5 months. Not only does spending less time per day mean you improve slower, but it also means you have to put in more hours total to achieve the same result.

Pirates are allergic to PDFs in general, and for good reason. Lots of PDFs are used to distribute malware, and they can have compatibility problems depending on how they're constructed. At their most compatible you just get a PDF wrapper around a bunch of images.

When you first encounter a new word in a book, you'll probably be able to guess it half the time, so you actually knew that word but just didn't know that you already knew it.

The rest you look up and may guess right when you see it again some other day. Once you get it right once you probably won't forget it.

If you forget it, it simply wasn't worth remembering and you just look it up again should you encounter it. No big deal.

And that's a big should because most words you forget you'll never see again. Take クーパー靭帯, I saw that once in a conan LN and never again. Only remembered it because boobs, but it's totally fine to forget words like this.

If you forget a really common word then you're probably doing something wrong.

what a hilarious thing to say anyway. by your logic i not only should recall vague meanings and readings for 1200 words, but i should actually have a better understanding of those words than if i had grinded anki. that is not the case at all. so that means that a beginner does not learn as much vocab from reading as he would grinding anki. it's important to not lie to beginners. let them know that if they want to make better progress they should grind anki for a few months as this anon suggests:

Since switching to reading and listening only I'm having an easier time actually remembering words.
Sure, I still forget words but after encountering and looking up a word a few times it actually sticks.

Which is why I think you shouldn't tell people they have to do X or have to do Y. They should instead try out different methods and see what works best for them and gives them the most enjoyment.

When I was learning english at school I didn't learn much at all, I managed to somewhat remember the grammar rules and vocabulary for the tests, but I would forget them shortly afterwards.

A conditional is a made up story because it's something that might happen, not something that already happened. But of course I'm implying it already happened, because you're clearly a retard and it's hard to imagine you knowing any Japanese at all.

>learning communities full of people who are not consuming native material, and it's because they think it's boring as fuck
These learning communities are definitely not learning any Japanese, I don't know why you are telling people to trace their footsteps.

if you're going to insist i've "dismissed" sentences without trying to understand them then OK. but i don't see the point in telling me your made up stories.
>it's hard to imagine you knowing any Japanese at all.
correct. the entire point is that after 4 hours of daily input for 2 months i don't know any japanese. have you not paid attention?
>I don't know why you are telling people to trace their footsteps.
i didn't tell anyone to trace their steps. i said that people dislike input.

Takes time my dude. I never said Anki was forbidden either, just don't use it when you should be enjoying stuff. My boring office job lets me do boring things like read news and drill anki, so I do it and "keep work at work" so to speak.

OFC this means you need to keep fresh words coming, which means you're hopefully reading stuff you like often enough to fill up about 20 cards or so to add to the pile each day.

>It wasn't until I started playing video games and enjoying other compelling content in english that I actually learned.

same for me.

i took one of those test that estimate your vocabolary in english years ago where i was studying the way they tell you at school.
i was at 2k words.

after 3 years of no study at all just reading manga vn and books it says i'm at 20k words.

i literally never tried to memorize a single word.

2k is the bare minimum for learning "independence" with any language.

Japanese is more like 4-5k depending on your Kanji coverage with those words, but at least by then you should have no trouble remembering them and learning new ones.

if you don't find any manga, visual novel, light novel, long-lasting youtube series, or anime that compels you to the point of hitting a critical mass, video games are seriously the best gateway left for you to hit learning independence in japanese, just like english.

i'm fully on board with having a base of 2k-5k vocab before letting immersion take you the rest of the way to fluency. definitely don't jump straight into native material with 20 vocab and think you'll learn words in a timely manner that way or you'll end up like me.
