Do you guys ever read/watch the news?

I just finished a language course in the Army and it wasn't Japanese but it has me pretty sure I can forge ahead and learn Japanese on my own now that I have a strong handle on language learning. A large portion of the course was reading/watching the news and I think it really helped build a good base of practical vocab and speed of understanding. Seems like you guys mostly watch slice of life anime though, wouldn't that have you all talking like fetishised school girls?

Yea we learn gender specific vocab from watching school girl shows and then we leave our basements and take the first flight to japan and try to talk with natives but we sound feminine and get weird looks so we leave in shame then we realize "oh yea if you want to communicate like a normal human being you should listen to content that better mirrors typical human interaction than school girl shows".

It should have been incredibly obvious such that only a dumb fuck would even bring up this point but just that socially retarded. Profound stuff.

Just read and look up the words you don't know. Nothing else required. If you don't get a sentence, don't worry about it and just move on (quite often the subsequent sentences can give you the additional context that you need to figure it out).

The brainlet translators didn't notice that though, so I'm guessing they just googled 武士は食わねど高笑い, saw 武士は食わねど高楊枝, and thought, "eh, close enough". 痩せ我慢 is probably what you're looking for in terms of meaning, I'm guessing you're an ESL who has never heard the term "stiff upper lip" before.
