This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in flash cards, authentic japanese rap, and traditional otaku media.

If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

You do realize there's a difference between the personality trait of individualism, which all of Western Europe (inc scandanavia) and the US score highly on and on which the Japanese score relatively lower, and the nominal support of government programs to assist poor people right?

what's funny is that matt has slowly been coming to the same conclusions djt has, that RTK is pointless to do at the beginning, that anki is a trap that will waste your time for no benefit, that forcing yourself to go monolingual is pointless, that active immersion is the only thing that really matters, etc.

why would you not read newspapers

the language might be stiff but youll learn new words from various topics that might not interest you in the first place by reading news

>> No.20436657

>>20436564
no but some of these are batshit crazy and what's even worse is some of the words are N3 for example but the kanji is N1 so they show up as kana soup in the exam and there's no kanji for you to make a guess so you have to know the word but to know the word you'd already have to have seen it in kanji. Even if you haven't seen that word they're easy if you can see and know the kanji because most of them are simple combinations but if you don't know this specific word that's in kana soup you're out of luck. i think N2 might be more difficult than N1 because they're stripping away the kanji from otherwise easy homophones.

How would you ever have 5000 vocab without knowing more than 1000 kanji? Do redditors actually learn hundreds of words in kana in genki or whatever is the hot meme in classrooms and r/learnjapanese these days?

my mining deck has 2400 kanji in it and is still missing 400 jouyou kanji so I bet even N1 has thousands of common words like 櫓 in kana for artificial difficulty, that one is a bad example though because that doesn't sound like any other word

that said i'm not planning on taking the JLPT anyway, it's a meme

the #1 issue is not that kana soup is difficult, it's that it's unnatural language written for foreigners and modified in an unnatural way

it's about guessing new words you don't know that don't have kanji. i know かてい is 家庭 but if i see it in kana form i wouldn't know it's meant to be 仮定 which would be easy to guess in kanji because it's borrowed determine = assumption. they're making the exam artificially difficult by removing your ability to guess new words on the spot

I’ve started reading Japanese literature and been quite enjoying it. I understand some of what I read and looking up unknown vocab is a breeze, putting thought into then figuring out how to parse a sentence is rather rewarding, indeed. I’ve come across a sentence that has a word I do not understand and haven’t had much luck in looking it up, the meaning of the sentence is obvious though, so I’m not too worried, just a bit annoyed that I couldn’t figure it out even with googling it.

これて歌でも上手ければ、いかにも女受けしそうなカリスマアイドルの出来上がりだ。
The problem I’m having with is that これて.
Google images shows some pictures of people singing. Dictionaries just say it’s the potential te form of 来る, google translate seems to be ignoring the て and thinks it means “this”.
So, what I’ve gathered is that it’s maybe a sort of set phrase to imply starting something, especially singing. Any ideas?

Nuke just posted his J-CAT score of 208 on his Discord. His last three test scores were stuck in the N3 area during his two years of Memrise. A few months after coming to DJT and his score jumps 30 points.

Have any of the other Matt followers posted their J-CAT or JLPT scores?

Just like every language, you have you consume it regularly and it will take years to become "fluent".
What I'm saying is:
>Read Japanese sites, manga or whatever everyday
>Listen to Japanese stuff everyday
>type in Japanese everyday
You will eventually memorize enough words and their kanji as well as grammar logic and some set phrases.

ever failed an anki card, then without looking you listened to the word and immediately knew what it was? that's basically what rtk does except with kanji. i can immediately recognize a word just from looking at the kanji. I can correctly guess the meaning of a word the first time i see it (of course this has limited uses but hey)

Anyways, after doing RTK, which only took 80 days my vocabulary retention jumped from 80% to 97% so it has helped me. The writing itself isn't useful in the "oh now i can handwrite this" way, it just cements shit in your memory.

you can literally remember the meanings and readings of like 400 words per month via anki in if you add 20 per day and factor in a retention rate of like 70%. so that's a low estimate.

wouldnt worry about it with numbers though it seems inevitable when learning numbers in a second language that youll initially link it heavily to your existing words but if you keep hearing numbers in japanese long enough youll slowly become less dependent on that association
