you take one page, or even half a page of text (that you've already looked up words for if you need to) and read it all the way through while timing yourself - focusing on comprehension, not speed as you read. then you read it again 3 or 4 more times and watch your speed gains (it will naturally increase, don't force it). then pick another half-page or big paragraph of text and repeat this process. you can log times in a lil notebook.
basically reading the same block of text repeatedly trains your brain to find the most efficient ways to parse, without the cognitive load of new words or vocab each time. isolated skillbuilding.

chunking is just reading while processing chunks of text at a time, rather than word by word. for example this sentence:
オタクであることを隠して過ごしていくことを決意し、高校に入学する。

someone who's used to hyper-focusing on each word (most beginners and even some intermediates still do this) might literally parse it like this by default:
オタク・で・ある・こと・を・隠して・過ごしていく・こと・を・決意し、・高校・に・入学する。
even if you're doing this as fast as you can, it's more taxing on the brain because you're working with tiny pieces of meaning. it's like counting a pile of pebbles one by one instead of groups of ten.
you want to get into the habit of using those building blocks to form chunks of meaning on the fly. like this:
オタクであることを・隠して・過ごしていくことを・決意し、・高校に入学する。
makes reading more natural, more efficient, and allows meaning to be extracted more easily. we read like this in our native language without thinking about it.

I would like to start reading but I'm afraid of all the kanji. Are there any visual novels or similar with complete furigana options? As far as I know there aren't any reliable methods to auto generate furigana on basically every kanji on your screen.

LNs would certainly work better, but I would prefer something with more pictures and less text for the beginning. Also I think auto generated furigana don't really work that good.

its very possible for chunking to not happen naturally for a long time with one's L2. making the conscious decision to do it and practicing really helps. there are even japanese articles on it (see pic)

repeated reading wasn't boring at all to me, its actually exciting to watch yourself parsing more quickly and easily and your times going down. gains transfer to future reading. of course you're not doing it every time you read, RR is a separate practice from regular reading that you can do for 10 minutes or so a few times a week till you're happy with how fast you've gotten.

For me the math simply doesn't add up. I assume learning enough kanji to be able to comfortably read meaningful content without effort would at least take me two years (more likely up to six or so). If I can focus all that time on simply learning the words by ear I highly presume I will be much faster. I already know around 2k words and can make them out in spoken language (of course not all the time depending on speed and slang). I fail to see how adding kanji to my routine could have made things faster. The thing that is hurting me at the moment, is that I understand quite some words, but often don't understand them in context. I'm still very very week on grammar and speed really is an issue. So reading in furigana would probably benefitial, but it's so fucking hard to find content. Probably because most focus on learning kanji, which is absolutely fine if your goal is to be able to read.

I'm not sure how many hours people put into RTK. But I highly doubt that any normal human bean is able to learn all the basic 2k kanji in half a year. Especially not if you consider all the readings. You can certainly get a solid base in 3-6 months, but then you will still need to practice for many years to read them fast and recognize the words that they might be part of.

RTK teaches you how to use mnemonics in order to remember characters from a keyword. It doesn't teach you readings, but you will be able to have a rough idea of the meaning of each character and how to write it from memory. It's definitely doable in a few months. I don't recommend it though.

This wrong advertising for what RTK ultimately does always keeps coming up.

No one was magically fluent at reading Kanji after 6 months of RTK, get those expectations out of your head as fast as you can.

The only thing to actually reinforce Kanji is through lots of active vocabulary practice (reading). Learning Kanji up front helps me personally in retaining more knowledge faster, but that's as far as it will go no more no less.

I will be going to japan in a few months. everything you're using is extremely outdated, you want to use ITHVNR or textractor/nexthooker (with the google translate plugin disabled) along with some setup that lets the clipboard get copied into a web browser (a clipboard inserter of some kind) with a mouseover dictionary on your browser (rikai, yomichan, nazeka (has a clipboard inserter built in), etc)

also your game just doesn't have any built-in hooks in ITH, that's why it's not working, you need an h-code

finally, don't use "parsers" (things that display word boundaries), furigana inserters, or machine translation, they will stunt your japanese (in increasing level of how bad they are for you, machine translation being the worst)

To take my previous answer more seriously, the modern N1 is basically just a test of your general comprehension of Japanese as whole. They're not going to throw anything truly obscure at you, but there are pretty much no restrictions about what shows up on the test.

I assume that they go out of their way to use certain grammar points and words as reference points for how the test's grade scaling system works ( http://www.jlpt.jp/e/about/pdf/scaledscore_e.pdf ), but the majority of the test is just going to be completely normal Japanese.

Trying to study for the N1 specifically isn't going to be useful if you don't have a good handle on the language in the first place, and I assume that you don't if you're asking a question like this. The only real reason to get one of those prep books is to make sure you haven't missed something horribly important and basic.

I'm ESL and at some point took a C1 exam in English. I didn't prepare a single thing I just took the goddamn test, cause I was confident I can speak English well enough. The same should be your goal for Japanese.

Sure. If you haven't actually lived in an English speaking country for a prolonged period of time it's your best bet to show your qualification in English. I've had to present some sort of certificate of English on numerous occasions so far, and this always seals the deal.
