VS Shmup is not e-sports material, but it can be pretty fun with friends, a modern one could have a better netplay too.
While the singleplayer can get boring with the AI at least you get all those different characters from past games again with new dialogues and music remixes, which is great content in its own way, Touhou has such a big cast now, I think ZUN should focus more on fleshing out established characters than continously introducing a full set of characters every game.

Secondary pandering is not great content. The game is not good just because it has le sakooya in it you fuck. Games are to be judged on the merits of their gameplay. And there's not much to do here since A) it's RNGshit which automatically marks it as a horrible piece of trash, B) you already admitted it's boring in SP and C) you already admitted it's so bad in MP that you can only have fun with it by sucking a second player's cock while playing.

It's a 2 player focused game, so yes, 2 players is the ideal way to get the real experience, nothing inherently bad about these types of games existing.

Half true, you can like both the gameplay and story and that can count towards your enjoyment of a game, you can train 1CC Lunatics and still discuss Touhou lore/characters.

There's RNG, but I think it's less pronounced in MP, in SP the AI cheats on Lunatic by doing hundreds of pixel perfect dodges and it's not exactly like that with human players.

I didn't said it's bad in MP, it's actually a pretty fun game, just not something that you want to play 24/7, there's a bit more going on playing with a friend compared to just playing with the AI.

It's a multiplayer focused game that ZUN made for people to comemorate the 10th anniversary together, not even saying that I prefer this formula over the traditional Touhou formula, but once in a while it would be a great way to break the routine and flesh out older characters, considering how much time ago PoFV came out, I think it's already time.

I think you completely missed his point, and its a point I agree with. A very good pro to a new Phantasmagoria would be that ZUN can flesh out existing characters that havent gotten a chance to shine yet. No, it doesnt need to include Sakuya (which btw did she hurt you or something dude?) but what it could ideally include is recent characters that ZUN hasnt done much with yet.

Static pattern piano recital dodging isn't very fun either. I don't even like PoFV very much, but you've never played any of these games seriously if you think that randomness doesn't play a huge part in all of them.

Do you know how any of PoFV's mechanics work. Bullet reflecting, meter management, releasing focus to manipulate fairy patterns, chaining, Bpoint thresholds, etc. The AI doesn't pay attention to a majority of these things, which makes playing against humans a completely different experience. The need to juggle all of these mechanics often makes the skill divide between two players very apparent. Luck is really only a factor when both players are at a level far beyond the skills of someone such as yourself.

One of my biggest wishes is to see more VS shmups come out. There was a western indie one released not long ago called Rival Megagun, and there's someone making their own PoFV clone called Wonderful Battle Dreamer. I'm not sure if there's any other new ones, though.
