I understand what Yotsuba is saying though I had to look up ふる but as for Yousuke I get the idea that he's driving and can't wave but that's from the image rather than the text.

Should I just keep reading? Or stop and break down the sentence in order to understand exactly what is being said? The former seems much more fun but I'm not sure how much I am actually learning that way.

Raw manga ... it depends on genre. But in general, language-wise you don't gain as much since it's mostly drawings and you only have dialogues, not descriptions. It's mostly entry stuff or for fun. It IS reading, just not very effective.
Anime with JP subs ... well, you'll pick up a bit of dialogue. Just like in manga, you have a lot of context, so it's easier to understand. But again, it takes up a lot of time.
VN's are often recommended, I don't use them though. But most are voiced and that helps with reading. Basically more entertaining novels (I guess, I said I don't read them).
You can probably gain the most vocab from novels, and get a lot of practice.

>> No.21228946

>>21228917
honestly i look at manga as jp subbed anime at ur own pace which i think ranks lower in terms of being good than just jp subbed anime because ideally u wouldnt fuck with playback and have to take it as it comes

Just keep on reading, consulting the dictionary as needed. If you read often enough, you'll become used to much of the vocabulary you'll see in the material you consume.
The Core2k/6k/10k was mostly made using a newspaper-based corpus, which is why it shows you words like 経営 or 工業 before つまらない or 猫.

You see not so long ago I was incredibly upset with Jamal and accused him of single handedly ruining the thread. I was trying to get him to prove he knows Japanese which he refused to do and that made me even more angry but really what does it matter. My desire for this thread to be populated by more advanced learners and that we should post in a way as to attract more of them into this thread was nonsensical in the first place, all Japanese learning communities are overwhelmingly populated by beginners and why should this place be an exception. I suppose with challenging everyone to quiz I just showed what everyone knew already, that nobody here really knows Japanese. So my anger at Jamal was misdirected. He merely was the most recognizable poster and I wanted a scapegoat.

He really isn't nearly the worst of what this thread offers anyway, which I have come to find out in the last few days. There is those spreading fake information about me by replicating my posting style, those vile people that accuse me of lying and cheating and people who come to molest me. Jamal hasn't done anything like that, sure he posts as Quizmaster but you can tell it's him by his posting style and his posts are never really aiming to hurt anyone. The nonsensical advice he gives is clearly recognizable as such (10k hours of english anime) and I'm impressed he managed to keep his character up for so long. He even accepted the ass bet which I have to say deserves some respect.

And by now it's obvious he isn't going anywhere. Countless people have told him to get out but he sticks around and by now the thread would be unrecognizable without his influence, whether it ultimately is good or bad. So in a way I've grown a bit fond of him.

Let's just take it easy and do our best to learn Japanese. (I'll still challenge people who talk shit to quiz though.)

At the start you understand few sentences, but for each one you figure out you improve. As time goes on, you're able to figure out more and more. So long as you're understanding at least some sentences, you're okay.

If you're having trouble understanding literally anything due to the colloquial speech though, consider reading an easy VN instead like Flyable Heart or Magical Charming instead. The narration at least will be generally be normal Japanese so it should be easier for you to get to grips with. Tbh, I think Yotsuba is a bad thing to recommend to beginners.

Efficient way to acquire passive vocabulary by rarepotato65. https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/9sbtrd/efficient_way_to_acquire_passive_vocabulary/

a worthwhile read. summary - you can acquire a huge passive vocabulary (30k+) via lots of reading and looking up, and it's more efficient than anki. but it only works well when your lookups are manual; no yomichan or rikaikun.

it appears that the added effort and time spent on each lookup is what encourages the brain to keep it. regardless of context, a 1-second yomichan scan does virtually nothing for retention.

stop trying to use grammatical constructions you don't understand
you need to mark the infinitive ("to do"), delete the verb entirely, or use a gerund ("doing"). flat out, 100%. otherwise it's either an imperative or it's not a sentence. you were going for the version without the verb but inserted the verb for no reason and said something you weren't trying to say, good job. doesn't mean it's valid

>When, in the course of your massive input you “ping” (as I call it) a word or phrase you recently learned, or one you are happy to remember, smile. Smiling makes you feel happy (try it). Or make a little “ding” sound in your mind. Or jump up and down and ワイワイ all over the room. Probably not the latter as you are trying to read quickly.

>The point is to tell the pleasure centers in your brain that this is a Good Thing. Even a little fleeting smile will do that. Don’t try to re-memorize it (unless you have a special reason to). Let your Japanese immersion input work on that. Just very quickly “flag” it for your mind.

Most VNs are paced poorly, yes. This is why most of the time, when someone recommends VNs to beginners, they emphasize one of two things: fun or shortness. If you're not having fun then you're going to get bored and stop learning very effectively. It might be because of pacing problems. It might be because it's just not your thing. It might be because your reading speed is 10 characters per minute so a short scene still feels like eternity. It's OK. Just find something different and more fun. On the other hand it's virtually impossible for short VNs to be paced poorly, so you almost always know that it's not pacing's fault that you're proceeding slowly.

What's the optimum new card limit in Anki?
20 new cards a day with a 90% retention rate = 18 new cards memorized per day.
40 with a 65% retention rate = 26 per day
100 with a 50% rate = 50 per day

Of course I just pulled all these retention rates out of my ass, but you get the idea. At what # of new cards does this trend start to reverse and crash your amount of memorized new cards per day to <18?

You know how when you look at my post right now you don't have to manually identify the individual letters? Your brain is isolating, identifying, and strengthening the idea of "that letter" just by looking at it. Really, you're just seeing what you want to see, not the individual pixels or lines.

Your brain does the same thing when you listen to people talk. It automatically isolates, identifies, and strengthens consonants, vowels, pitch changes, lengths, word boundaries, etc. But you're starting from zero.

Even though you're starting from zero, listening is still helpful, because there's enough regularity to speech that your brain can learn to break things apart through pure unconscious intuition. It's like black magic.

Even if you were able to memorize every single point mentioned in Tae Kim, Imabi, or the DJG, and also know all of the Jouyou kanji + at least 5000 words, it'll still be kind of odd at first to read Japanese sentences (unless your native language is something like Turkish or Korean).

Chinese has kanji that do the same thing as particles in Japanese. "的" is basically just "の". Once you are used to it, the fact that Chinese doesn't have spaces doesn't make it any more difficult than Japanese. In general, Chinese is actually much easier to read than jp, as kanji are inherently easier to recognize than kana. Kanji have MEANING, whereas kana only have SOUND. "不来" is easier to process than "来ない". When reading jp subtitles, it's always kana that trips me up, not kanji.

Specifically I will be doing Core2k in the morning (because it takes 15 mins max so i cant bring myself to drop it) combined with many hours of reading jn which I will try to work out words and their meaning and if I cant get the gist of it I'll look them up on Jisho and refer to Tae Kim when needed but not touch Anki other than for Core2k and just keep reading instead.
I'm going to track my month in terms of "exactly" how many hours I dedicate per day to reading.
I've marked the 25th of May in my calender so I'll be sure to update you all on how it goes and find out once and for all if mass input is truely the way to go.

I could write you both 棚 and 柵 right now. As it's not Japanese in the first place no Kanji knowledge helps here. If you want to compare it to those two Kanji anyway, yes the middle stroke connects, but the top one doesn't and the bottom has a bend like in 棚. As a natives speakers mistakes presumably have that Kanji knowledge and still make the mistake your statement is invalid.

That's what I did, using names like へゲル, ウィトゲンシュタイン, イブンラシド, スルタンセリム.
Forcing myself to write down and tell names like キルケガルド apart from キッチナー and クラスノダール is what made me somehow know which katakana was which.

This is "we'll meet again in the next world", basically. Think "また明日" ("see you again tomorrow"). The verb 会う is left out because it's assumed to be understood from context.

For me yes, but I reckon you could get the same or better results just mining words from what you consume. I did it because I hated to search for absolutely every single word in the dictionary while reading a simple manga. So I wanted a base vocabulary that could help me make more enjoyable consuming media. But more than 10k core I found more valuable doing DOJG. Grammar was a headache before doing it, now I feel at home with almost any common grammar point. Doing RTK in retrospect isn't that necessary, but because doing vol 1 was the first thing I did after learning hiragana and katakana it got me motivated to seriously study Japanese, got the discipline to study 3 to 4 hours daily since July last year.

I've literally never seen a single person recommend this before.

Also, the Anki deck still has mistakes in it and whoever made it has long since given up on fixing them so I wouldn't touch that with a barge pole.

There is absolutely no reason for anyone to read DOJG back to back, and it was never produced with the intention of being used that way, so the grammar points and example sentences don't follow any sort of logical progression from simple (私はゲイです。) to complex which is the only thing that could make treating the DOJG as a grammar guide anything less than full retard.

It's a grammar DICTIONARY, and that's how it's supposed to be used (HJGP is better though so even in this case there's no reason to use DOJG).

Wrote this one in january

You can hardly taste it unless you had unhealthy amounts anyways.

Instant coffee. I heat up a shot glass of water then add 5 spoon fulls of the good instant and then mix it into a water bottle every day. Sometimes I'll make 3 bottles at once and store the rest in the fridge. If I try to learn nihongo without it I'm doing like 30% efficiency.

Well you know the deal with matt is that beyond trying to start a cult of personality and mixing extremely questionable advice with shit that everyone already knew works to establish his brand, he is kind of unlikeable guy.
He isn't even a 4chan autist so man it's not like hating on one of us, he is totally bluepilled on everything, talks shit about how he wouldn't go on a site like 4chan and how horrible drumpf is. At least if he was an anime alt righter I might support him.

>Instant coffee

I thought instant was shit too and 90% of them are, but good ones exist and I use a gourmet creamer and it tastes perfect and takes literally 30 seconds.
