everyone who uses anki, remember to use it skillfully. if you know the words 直接 and 無視 already, don't add 直視 to your deck. what's the point? you're pretty much guaranteed to know it after like two encounters.

but don't get me wrong, not every 熟語 is like this. even if you know both readings and have experience with both kanji, the meaning of the word can be slightly or even significantly different from what you'd expect. in those cases go ahead and add it. just be smart. anki is for things you wouldn't pick up naturally in a short amount of time.

sonna and sonna ni, I still don't understand some aspects of it, or maybe I do so I want to see if I am right.

"sonna" can be used either alone, to mean "how?".
or sonna + noun, to mean: "like that [noun]" and it is considered as just an adjective.

"sonna ni" on the other hand is an adverb, and it roughly means: "[verb]ing like that [whatever]"

did I get it right? Yes, I'm reading Tae Kim guide to japanese, this questions originates from the usage of his examples.

That would work as a defense if you could provide an alternative explanation of the process these outliers follow.
Because what they're doing to get fluent is still "learning the language", which you have already provided a definition for that conflicts with what they're doing, as it does not entail grammar study.
Your argument, I assume, boils down to them being extremely skilled at learning the language, but that doesn't change that they are in fact "learning" it.
Now you either have to provide an alternative explanation, (i.e. they employ magic instead of learning) or concende that your definition is retarded.

Speaking of Nazeka, does anyone else find that the "Dictionary item font size" setting just gets ignored most of the time?

It's really inconsistent for me. Sometimes (rarely) it will work on every site, no problem. Other times it will only work on some sites but not others. Other times it doesn't work at all. It's weird considering that the other two font size settings, "Definition font size" and "Reading font size" seem to work just fine at all times (sometimes messing with those settings is what it takes to get the "Dictionary item font size" setting to decide to start working).

So for some strange reason the W3C and major browsers decided not to make it possible to "stop the cascade" which means that unless you use really hacky CSS page CSS is always going to affect something that an addon hooks into the page if the page's CSS is aggressive enough. This basically has the effect that tiny differences in page CSS structure (or addon CSS structure) can completely change what rules actually get applied. The only way to fix this is to use the Shadow DOM, but it's a huge, huge can of worms, and using it would make it harder to port the addon the chrome in the future.

If you post a specific example of a page where a style setting is broken and what values you're using that show it being broken I can take a look and add more specificity to fix it for that specific page.

That's not what he was implying at all.
You can google stuff up, or you can attend classes directed by people who are supposed to be experts on those topics, but in either case, you trust other people to tell you some kind of truth about such matters. You believe that others have actually succeded in acquiring information that you do not have, and that they can bestow upon you the knowledge they have gathered together.
It's not about trusting people whom you spend your money on paying. It's about accepting that there is no solution that will actually somehow make you fluent enough to be able to go to comic stores in Japan and buy 男の娘 h-manga, which you'd expect to be able to understand by then for the sake of masturbating to them.

Therefore, use anything, and you can never quite be sure if the manga you just bought will have a vocabulary that's right within your range of comprehensible vocabulary.
As a matter of fact, if we assume the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is right, it's impossible to ever understand anything that doesn't come from your own culture.

>If you post a specific example of a page where a style setting is broken
After playing around with it more, it seems to be the case that it's basically broken on every site (even on the LNs in the DJT Library and on Nazeka's own reader page) UNTIL you mess with one of the other font settings like I mentioned.

But messing with the other font settings only causes it to start working on pages which have already been loaded. For any pages loaded at a later point, you will have to once again mess with the font settings to trigger them to start working on that newly loaded page. I'm not sure why this would be, but I think it could maybe hold a clue to solving the problem.

Also worth noting is that the popup scale setting (which also effects text size) works 100% of the time. The only problem with using this is that it modifies the size of all text in the popup, so the definition and reading text becomes way bigger than I would like it to be. If popup scale could somehow be applied to individual items within the popup, this seems like it would be the best solution, but I'm going to guess that it isn't possible.

>and what values you're using
The font size I use doesn't seem to make any difference, but just in case it's relevant at all I have it set to 23 (though I use 1.2 for the popup scale so in practice that's 28). Like I say though, I've tried other settings and it seems to work the same way with all of them.

>The only way to fix this is to use the Shadow DOM, but it's a huge, huge can of worms, and using it would make it harder to port the addon the chrome in the future.
Don't feel any need to go that far for my sake. Most people probably don't care about this and just stick with the defaults, so if it's not your fault and there's no way to fix it without creating a new, probably even bigger problem then it's probably just best to leave it.

50 years is on the high side, I would imagine in the next 10 years or so it would be pretty perfect. Even with currently technology most the time translations are "accurate" although grammatically nonsensical. It's silly to think that the technology is that far out of reach.

>and on Nazeka's own reader page
Okay, that's a bug.

The font size settings were added by someone who wanted them. I just made sure they technically worked (by setting them all at the same time) and that their code didn't have any obvious security issues (hard to introduce security problems in such a small change, but it happens sometimes), so I'll look into this when I'm bored.

>If popup scale could somehow be applied to individual items within the popup, this seems like it would be the best solution, but I'm going to guess that it isn't possible.
It actually is, but I don't know if it would affect how text flow works or anything like that. You could try it out with your browser's edit/inspect tools if you want.

But getting real time translations is not the end goal why you should study this language. It's understanding something in the native language it was written in. Personally I think style is very hard to translate in either case and best appreciated by understanding the original text.

You can already get translated material now easily, but given the chance wouldn't you rather do it in Japanese?

>>21366153
This is no even the market for this type of translation. If there's a lot of money on the table and if there's legal documents involved you better make sure to run this by someone who can vouch for the correctness of the translations. Google would never give you a guarantee that it's translations are correct especially in a legal context.

>>21366191
It's mostly serviceable but there needs to be some further push to really improve between language pairs that are poorly supported. It's easy to be fooled by translations of very common phrases between more closely related languages. I'm not a general nay sayer, but I'm not convinced these problems are going to disappear so easily at this point.

Oh, by the way, text field settings (including the numebrs) in Nazeka only change when you hit enter or click away from the input that you're typing into, so if you were, say, typing into the field then mousing over the reader in another window while the setting still had keyboard focus, it wouldn't have updated yet.

I think whenever I've been testing it I've had the add-on settings page closed altogether. Just tried testing again now to be sure and everything is still working exactly as I described it before.

When you first open the reader, font size settings for Nazeka's popup don't work at all, but if you leave the reader open, go into Nazeka's settings and then bump the definition font setting up a few points before returning the value back to its original setting, when you go back to the reader the dictionary item font size setting (along with the other font size settings) will now be working. If you close and re-open the reader though it will go back to being broken again.

Is the behavior different on your end?

Your only other option is Kenkyusha's J-E dictionary which is really unsuited for use with popup dictionaries, if that's what you're wanting to use it for. It also doesn't have as many entries as JMDICT.

While Kenkyusha's definitions are usually going to be more accurate than JMDICT's where the two conflict, most of the time there's little to no difference, and what difference there is isn't enough to offset the disadvantages that come with Kenkyusha's use.

JMDICT is perfectly serviceable (and honestly by far the most suitable choice) for quick look-ups while reading.

I haven't tried texthooking because there are almost no kanji and everything is voiced, so I could understand just fine. But I suppose it should work just fine, I installed everything inside the VM. I don't want to have cracked software on my main machine and VNs don't need much graphics.

I think you relied to the wrong posts of mine and mixed up the advice.
So the ri fonts will give some hint on the stroke direction
And the dots on shi tsu so n are usually roughly either horizontal or vertical and then the long stroke is oriented to be perpendicular to those dots...I didn't think of that. Maybe I'll be able to write them more accurately now.

Does anyone remember if learning the katakana was noticeably easier than learning the Hiragana?
It took me 3-4 days to memorise the Hira with some difficulty, but now I've suddenly been able to learn half the Kana in a single afternoon with relative ease.
Weird. I'm not sure if it had just been many years since I had utilised that memory part of my brain and hence the difficulty starting out... or if it is easier for some reason to do with now already knowing the possible set of consonants in Japanese.

when i read novels i often find myself spacing out and realizing i didn't really understand what i read in the past 10-20 seconds and i have to reread. i've observed people who have read, comprehended, and immediately demonstrated understanding of the text by talking about it, whereas i would have to reread the same text in order to understand it, so i know for a fact it's all about IQ. it's funny because most people think a lack of reading makes you more dumb, but they ignore the fact that being dumb means you get less out of what you read, or reading is more of a struggle. so dumb people simply do it less.

Probably would have learned more if used jisho here and there and wrotten it down on a notebook somewhere so later you could mine it.

why not just learn words
yes if you just learn words then you may mix up certain kanji when you see them in isolation. but that will make pretty much no difference in your ability to comprehend native material since those will always be in context so whyyy does studyin individual kanji matter at all

can someone please answer this or is the answer just "it doesn't"
