making your own is the best and the stickiest. that's what i did. watch anime with both japanese and english subs (daiweeb or animelon to make things easy for yourself) and only farm sentences that are simple enough for your level. break down any new vocab and grammar for each sentence on the back of the card. try to find and study only 5 to 10 a day, until you feel more comfortable and can do more per day.

once you've gotten through 500 to 1,000 sentence cards this way, that's when i'd start farming mostly single-word cards - again, only from sentences simple enough for you to understand. kanji you encountered in your sentence cards will re-appear, you'll get used to seeing words used in meaningful contexts and you'll no longer need to have sentence around them to remember them (although there's nothing wrong with still doing some sentence cards here and there, or putting helpful sentences on the back).

because you need controlled exposure to the same things before moving on to more difficult things. this applies for literally any area of study.
as a beginner with (i'm assuming) less than 1,000 words under his belt, you will not be able to "just read" enough to get the kind of repetition you need to solidify a firm foundation. your head will constantly be scrambled with new unknown things, with nothing getting nailed down. it will be more stressful than necessary, with far less efficiency.

>the problem is that the "skill" you're practicing with recall in anki is to have an english word/sentence and map it to japanese, instead of learning the meaning of japanese words
that isn't a problem at all, it's a necessary intermediate step. the english keyword is nothing but a temporary placeholder for meaning. with repetition the meaning of the english word will transfer to the japanese word and translating to the english will no longer be necessary, that's the point. and when that happens (after the first 3 reviews or so) THEN it's fine to review without even checking the english.

Holy shit, I can't believe how fast time passes.
I started learning Japanese when this thread was at around 500-600.

I have to say, even though I don't watch anime and shit anymore, I do owe a lot to this thread. I was able to get into a really hard scholarship program to do my degree in Japan. Currently studying computer science in a renowned university here. If it wasn't for you bunch of autists I probably wouldn't have had the dedication or motivation to come this far.

Now, studying my degree in Japanese (had one year of studying japanese 8+ hours per day in order to get my japanese to a university student's level), living and working with japanese people. I can say I'm quite advanced on the japanese scale. Even though I'm still shit, I'm close to fluency acording to every single person I talk or text to here.

Would you faggots be interested in me giving advice on what actually works and what is a waste of time on learning japanese? I pretty much tried EVERY SINGLE method of learning and by trial and error adapted and got "my own" style of learning. Also can speak 5 other languages so any questions are welcome.

knowing you guys I'll get called a faggot and be asked to fuck off though.

if your vocab is over 3,000 and you read and listen regularly (even one hour a day) then your anki vocab cards don't even have to stay alive for more than a month, two tops. you can delete or suspend them after reviewing for a month because by that point you'll likely already have seen them in context again or be able to remember them well enough the next the you do see them. don't torture yourself and waste extra time by keeping shit in your deck forever. anki is a temporary incubator for words.

seeing them again in reading and anime is what really made them intuitive, anki just felt like a pin to hold them in place for a little while so i wouldn't forget before the next few encounters. it works great for that.

I don't use Chromium for day to day usage so a Chrome extension isn't any good to me really. I only have Chromium installed so I can determine in cases like this one whether Firefox or the webpage is to blame for what's going on. If a webpage is broken only in Firefox, I know that the problem is being caused by an add-on or maybe even Firefox itself, whereas if a page is broken in both then I know the webpage is just fucked.

If you were talking about the browser itself, why did you continue your post talking about your script-blocking add-on?

Anyway, with all add-ons disabled there is nothing that should be preventing the page from running properly. All scripts are free to run uninhibited and it still doesn't show up.

I am planning to self study for the AP Japanese exam next year, but I’m not sure what level I need to be at. I passed the JLPT N5 this December and am at around a mid N4 level now. Which textbooks did you use if you took the class? I’ve skimmed through Genki II and also have the Yookoso series. What resources did your teacher use for the class? Do any of you have any experience with the exam and how it compares to the JLPT. I know this question has been asked numerous times before but information on this exam is sparse.

I don't know shit about AP Japanese, but if you're looking for a more advanced textbook than Genki II you should give Tobira (上級へのとびら) a try. I wouldn't know through experience, but many people have said it has n3-n2 level material in it. It's a noticealble jump up from Genki II, but, speaking from experience, I don't think it's that bad if you've done Genki II, and given all the content it offers I think it's a good next step. More than anything though you should just be consuming a shit ton of native content, like listening for at least a couple hours a day (though honestly at least 3 if not more) and reading material that's past your level but not too much past it. That's about all I got.

It's better than doing nothing, but worse than mining words you've exposed yourself to.

The most common 10,000 words in a language is very helpful if you want to talk to lots of people about lots of shit, but you don't need that vocab set unless your actual interests are very broad, and you really want to talk about the efficiency of carburaters vs fuel injectors and the best way to cook a steak.

Presumably, your interests are more narrow than this, so it would serve you better to not.

>tmw so retarded you're not sure if you should hook subtitles and check words you don't know or if you should just watch and try to understand by yourself while reading the subtitles

I'm watching animes I've already seen and I like a lot so I know what's happening but sometimes there are sentences where I don't even recognize one kanji

u gotta weigh the time itd take vs how much more input u could be getting instead if u just let it go
if u dont know a single fuckin word in the sentence its prob not worth ur time to try to figure out unless its important to the plot
if that shit is the majority then ur in over ur head

Anime has a lot more visual information. I know a lot of people who express surprise at being good at anime but not other things when the answer is just they suck at everything, but it's easier to guess and make assumptions with anime.
