Here's a guide to names that show up on djt indicating which ones matter

Stephen Krashen: MANDATORY. Premier expert in the field of language acquisition. Has extensive research backing up his "input hypothesis." He tends to repeat himself in talks but it's worth watching a few until you fully understand that the only task of someone looking to acquire a language are either (1) find compelling comprehensible content or (2) find compelling content and use whatever method you like to make it comprehensible.

Steve Kaufmann (lingosteve): HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Polyglot. Has a method to make content comprehensible and a commercial website that implements this method. The website is no good for Japanese, using Yomichan is better, but it's worth watching some of his videos to get a feeling for how language acquisition works for a solo learner in practice.

Khatzumoto: Early material HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, later material IGNORE. Has a method to make content comprehensible specifically aimed at Japanese and wrote extensively about maintaining the proper mindset for language acquisition. Eventually started making up garbage methods he could sell.

Tae Kim: RECOMMENDED. Wrote a Japanese grammar guide, it's not perfect but it's more than good enough to start making content comprehensible.

Matt Bonder (mattvsjapan): IGNORE. Reached a decent level using Khatzumoto's method but became monomaniacally obsessed with unachievable perfection. Pushes his own twist on the method which adds absolutely nothing useful.

Cure Dolly: Grammar material OPTIONAL everything else IGNORE. Has an approach to grammar that is in some ways superior to Tae Kim's but not in any way that makes any real difference. Going through her grammar videos after some conventional treatment might help clarify a few things. Also pushes her own twist to Khatzumoto's method which adds absolutely nothing useful and was clearly constructed in complete ignorance of linguistic theory.

Calvin (calvinajatt, calvinmia, sentenceminer, thesentenceminer, xiaovin, calvininput, boringcalvin): MANDATORY if you can find his writings, which tragically have been scrubbed from the internet. Just as Krashen presents several case studies proving the efficacy of input-based acquisition, Calvin provided an invaluable case study on what not to do. In particular he chose languages with no content he found compelling and became obsessed with Matt's methods over the languages themselves. His resulting struggles are heartbreaking to read but highly illustrative.

Yogapants (Aka Yoga MIA): MANDATORY. High functioning autistic with off the charts linguistic intuition. His odd methodology and charismatic personality may be somewhat off-putting for first timers, but stick with him if you want to get fluent fast.

Why are people still asking how to learn a language when they've already learned one? You can figure out what works and what doesn't when you start trying. Reading teaches vocabulary fast, watching something and don't know, while looking things up, helps. Will grammar books help, yes. Will instructions help, yes. Comprehensible input. If you conjugate a う verb to its enduring state do you still just further modify it as a る verb? So if you wanted to make 聞いている negative would it be 聞いていない? Or would you make it negative during theて form to be 聞かなくている ? You just consume anime and make as many as there are elements of the language you don't know.
At least that's what I do but I realize that may be pretty hard for beginners. You should at the very least be capable of keeping up your quota of 20-40 cards and if you are a beginner sticking to more common things may be smart.

It's okay if you can make enough cards. The great thing about anime cards (as opposed to normal words cards) is that it doesn't matter if you saw the context a few weeks back or yesterday because the context is fully on the card with audio and will give you a vivid enough reminder that creation date doesn't matter.

Yea that's why they are great.

The web version sucks though because it never ends and there is never a winner. You can't change any settings after starting either. The Discord version has a lot of advantages.

I realize saying Discord is a different thing, but you can join with just a guest account without an email that you just abandon after you are done playing and keep repeating. In that sense it's not really requiring more of you than the web version.

do not mystify the Japanese language, do not gamify it, don't do that shit. it's a language like English. You can certainly gamify parts of it, most obviously kanji, but that is more like some side fun, it doesn't really matter. try reading some Shakespeare, watch yourself not understand words and grammar, realize that it's not too different for japanese natives with similar japanese texts. and how incredibly little Shakespearean language matters outside of literature, too. why do people (who don't hand-write japanese, or only do a little writing) care at all about mixing up similar kanji?

its rarely gonna be a problem if all your vocab acquisition is from native material and not textbooks with disembodied word lists. which kanji it is will be obvious from surrounding context 99% of the time. the other 1% all you have to do is remember those one or two radical differences between the two kanji, a creative mnemonic often works fine.

seriously, words from input + knowing the keywords for distinguishing radicals is all you need.

Some things just don't work on Wine no matter what you do. This might be one such case (if so, you can try running it in virtual Windows machine via VirtualBox or VMWare and see if you have any luck with there).

Also, I hope you aren't using the version of Wine from the Ubuntu repos, otherwise that means even more things than normal won't work properly for you. Repo versions of Wine outside of bleeding edge distros like Arch, etc's are usually ancient and full of bugs which were fixed years ago.

acquiring a large vocabulary simply boils down to optimizing exposure to new words as much as possible. anki makes that process pretty straightforward. reading/listening a LOT and often can get the job done too but since it’s more random it really has to be a LOT of input to match the efficiency of say... 1 hour of reading + 40/day anki. like 4 to 5 hours of reading a day.

1. anime cards with sound, sentence and image
2. anime (or manga) cards with no sound (except the single word), but sentence and image.
3. cards with anime, manga, or VN/LN sentence but no audio (except the single word’s) and no images.
4. single word cards with word’s audio only.
5. single word card, no audio.

this also seems to be the order of time required, from most to least. last two take the same amount of time if one uses yomichan though.

yeah, I did subs2srs cards for a few months and now I just have to re-learn a bunch of the words as vocab cards. Quizlord anime cards are the way. Matt and Yoga use sentence cards, but I guess if you immerse enough you'll learn the words in your sentence cards anyway.
As for usage examples being "ingrained in my brain," this rarely happens for me.

Gonna probably wipe this sentence bank sometime, but the usage examples are useful sometimes.

With a vocab card you might learn to read the word 怪訝 and what it means.
With a sentence card that contains 怪訝そうな顔 you get all of that and this particular usage which will then later on help you when you're attempting to output.
Just having the sentences on the back is not enough to make the usage stick.

yeah i had 95% for sentences, because the sentence is a massive hint. you know the meaning immediately from the sentence, you get it for free. the reading is free as well, but less reliably. when i rep sentences i often notice i remember the reading from reading the sentence and recognizing the next sound that should come in the sentence, not from actually reading that particular word. so the card essentially gives you the full answer on the front. because of this your retention will be really high. honestly are your really learning 95% of the target words you mine?

the answer for me is overwhelmingly yes, otherwise i wouldn't still be doing it
there were very few instances where i had to make another card for a word i already had in my deck because i couldn't read it or didn't know the meaning in the wild

the anime card retention rate on the other hand is based on data from one single person which isn't very representative. we need to know how long it takes non-autists to make these cards and how their retention rate on them is.

i think it's entirely possible that quiz is actually pretty low iq and the reason he uses anime cards is that he needs the visual and audio reinforcement to achieve the same retention rate that actually smart people can get with plain old one-click-creation vocab cards.

How can I avoid burnout? My life is a wreck that likely will never recover but I still have to wageslave. Everytime Im working I want to read and learn but then struggle to do so when I'm home. The stress from work one way or another breaks me so after just a bit of reading I can't even force myself to read what the damn page says anymore. Then that feeds into the depression feedback loop and it all goes to shit for days weeks or months and a habit fails to form again and again.

Read something. Copy + paste a sentence you happen to find with something that has an unknown element (be it vocabulary, grammar, or metaphorical usage of a certain word) onto a new card on anki.
Put whatever you feel like putting up front (be it the unknown word, or the oddly phrased bit), and put most of the bulk of the sentence + explanation on the back.

I wish Nazeka had a keyboard shortcut for mining like this.

The actual act of mining a word in Nazeka is kind of a pain compared to Yomichan. One of the few things I miss since switching. You have to press "m" to open the mining interface, which moves the popup away from where your cursor is to the upper-right corner of the screen, then you have to drag your mouse all the way over there to click on the word you want to mine. I often end up losing my place in my reading material because of it.

Would make life a lot easier if there was a shortcut to just mine the uppermost entry from your popup without having to go through the mining interface, and shortcut keys to mine specific entries from the mining interface so you didn't have to physically click on them. Would also be nice if there was an option to stop the mining UI from moving the popup. hint hint wareya
