what about that one famous polyglot dude who used to alternate between all the languages he had learned throughout the day because he grew rusty in them when he didn't. this is true for 100% of everyone btw even kaufmann. he tends to learn closely related languages in succession and the cognates help.

How do you make your anime cards?
How long does it take you to make them?

I'm feeling like I might wanna do something similar but I don't know how and don't wanna spend 5+ minutes making a better card when it's only gonna reduce my Anki reps by like 30 seconds overall.

after i'm done taking the N2 i think i'm going to start a custom kanji deck that's 100 times better than RTK, compiled only from kanji i've encountered in words, but can't confidently recall a meaning for the individual kanji.

it's gonna look like the attached image
kanji by itself on the front.
on the back, keyword/short description in JAPANESE taken from 漢字ペディア, and a word that contains the kanji (one i already know).

on the first review i'll write the kanji by its radicals (only for muscle memory bonus, not to be able to write them all from memory, although that might happen anyway for some of them), and only write it again after that if i forget it/mix it up with another one.

since i obviously won't be adding kanji i already know like the back of my hand, there will probably be around 700 left to study out of jouyou. 15 a day and i'd get through the deck in 46 days. and if what this guy said
>>21594394
>"rtk doesnt help you understand japanese" on the contrary kanji are not arbitrarily chosen but they are chosen by meaning in at least 90% of words rtk just hands you the definition for all of them
has any merit, it should make acquiring vocabulary from that point onwards even easier. all the benefits of RTK i actually care about. just no pointless english keywords, unnecessary stories (i might make a couple for ones that are easy to confuse, perhaps using only the radical(s) that are unique from the 似てる漢字), or pointlessly forcing myself to memorize all their writings.

This is a pretty bad take. I know 意 (ez common Kanji I know but example still stands) has a meaning like "feelings" or "thoughts", from learning「意味」so when I saw「意識」and「得意」I had a pretty good idea of what they meant before looking them up.

I'm sure someone can come up with a better example but it doesn't really matter. You're not memorizing the meaning of the kanji as a skill unto itself. It's a means to the end of, ya know, learning Japanese.

>> No.21595439

>>21595336
I was thinking of doing this myself actually. I agree with your arguments in theory. Plus people saying read more (while I agree with the sentiment) are forgetting that these kanji occur less frequently so they become harder to get used to.

Secondly, it will make it easier to acquire any words that use those kanji because you'll have some mnemonic bedrock for them to cling to

>these kanji occur less frequently so they become harder to get used to
yep. and some of them there's just this vague air of mystery around them, because my memory is hooked to the kanji that i'm more familiar with and kind of just ignores the other one? if that makes sense. for example when i see 衝撃, since i'm only sure what げき is, then aside from the reading and the meaning of the entire word, my mind just goes "somethin i dont rlly know + 撃".
there are a bunch of words where that happens. i want to balance that out.

since i'll be making this deck alongside my reading rather than all at once (spot a kanji that falls into said category, mark it for adding), it really won't feel like be that big of an investment. and i'll quickly be able to tell as i continue to read alongside making/reviewing the deck, whether it's helping with my recognition and processing of the kanji i add, or not. i predict that it will.

that distinction is irrelevant here since i'm using japanese descriptions and not english keywords, and cause i'm already familiar with the words i'm putting on the back/how they're used.

theres no reason why doing this would be incompatible with "feeling" the kanji like i can with the ones i already know well.
i'm using japanese definitions/keywords for a reason. instead of blindly memorizing an english word to recall, i'm attaching the feeling of the kanji that the japanese description of it points to. it's just a more deliberate/targeted version of what already happens when learning words.

this is a major appealing point about this.

on top of that even the natives have to study kanji consciously. You're doing it in context and using it to supplement your learning so it's not as abstract as front loading with rtk and your brain already has a solid network in place to make it relatively effortless. Looks like you stand to gain a lot of bang for buck from a theoretical perspective desu. You'll be better at guessing the meanings of academic compound words too and all of this comes at a much cheaper investment than just adding every word you dont know.

i think kanji writing cards have more negatives overall but I'll entertain it. Kanji writing cards force you to retrieve the kanji from memory thereby creating a stronger, clearer and more accurate mnemonic bedrock. This mnemonic bedrock will allow you to pick up the other information about the kanji (words, readings) without confusing it with others and allowing you to make more associations, reducing the memory burden, blah blah... I'll stop now im starting to remind myself of reddit or mattvsjapan

read more is the only thing that's got the science behind it. memory curve doesn't count because memorizing is at best a component of acquiring.

nhk radio news is usually almost word for word the same as the individual articles. Not that you would understand any of it for while as a beginner. I would recommend keeping reading and listening separate and listening to something you are more likely to understand more of. Then gradually move your way up to the news. With reading though you have infinite time to look the words up and you can just copy them into a dictionary so there is no way you can really mess up.

I use anki for reviews, I just study my daily new cards through physical flash cards and then throw them out. I can recognize/review words fine on a screen but I can't memorize new ones. It is retarded I'll admit but it works so whatever. Before I did this I'd spend an hour trying to memorize new cards in anki and had a 60% retention rate.

people think learning is only stuff you do on purpose like learning how to code or learning a language. no. in fact the vast majority of our learning takes place outside of those kinds of things.
almost everything you do every day without even thinking about it, was learned, whether you're aware of that or not. how are your thinking patterns any different?

your current state is an accumulation of probably thousands of hours of negative rumination and denial of your own human needs; including things like physical touch like the other guys said. it it didn't happen overnight or by magic. you learned shitty patterns that make you feel shitty and now your brain is repeating them out of habit.

Welcome to the club. I don't come to this sub anymore unless it's mentioned in other subs but when I used to study Japanese I'd be here almost every day for 18 months and the 1 thing that always would get on my nerves, there are so many controversial topics on this sub, but the one thing that should be controversial, SRS flashcards, isn't. Beginners who create thread "how should I learn vocab" insta get recommended sentence mining or something similar and even in this thread there are opinions like "SRS is technically one of the most efficient ways to learn things" which aren't even questioned.

So anyways, first of all, it's fine, not wasting time creating cards is more efficient in learning new vocab anyways. Just read and dont be lazy to look words up. You'll snowball vocab like crazy. For reference, in 5 days will be 2.5 years since I started learning Japanese, recently I've finished reading long JRPG in fantasy setting and I only had to look up 1-2 words every hour(and I always look up stuff I either cant guess meaning or dont know how to pronounce Kanji), I've read more than 50 novels and half a year ago I took some vocabulary test online and it said I knew 35k Japanese vocab. That's pretty efficient if I had to say so myself, I wonder how many reviews I'd have every day if I tried to learn 30k words in 2 years with Anki.

Do you read aloud in your head when you read japanese? How fast are you at reading?

>> No.21598959

>>21598943
I literally read aloud. It's way easier to make links to stuff I've heard/read in the past if I actually hear the words. A sentence which made 0 sense might make a bit more sense by doing this.

I'm slow as fuck.

>> No.21598978

since you use the i word maybe this is something copy and pasted from the mia discord but if its not ill say you shouldnt time yourself when doing japanese you should just have fun and stop when you arent having fun. switch it up. but if youre timing yourself its basically like ok i hate japanese so much but maybe if i set a timer for 5 seconds i can read something in japanese and make it out alive. if its not fun dont do it. learning japanese isnt for everyone if its a pain stop doing it

I disagree with this premise. People learn shit all the time that they don't have fun with 100% of the time. I got a bachelor and master degree doing just that.

I enjoy it most of the time, but some days days it's a chore but I don't want to skip out entirely on those days (hence my time box question since I saw someone mention it in the last thread). Overall I still want to learn the language because I want to reach my goal of being fluent, at which point it won't feel like a chore because the things that make it feel like that won't be occurring anymore, or at least not to the same degree. You don't have to enjoy the journey, that's a meme.

>> No.21599033

>>21599006
if you are struggling so much that you are thinking of breaking down your learning time down to ten minutes at a time itll probably take you 10 years to get fluent. absolutely it is more advantageous to read for hours and hours on end. the faster you run into new words and seeing those words repeated in text the faster youll progress. you cant expect a lot doing 10 minutes at a time cuz that isnt enough time to do a lot cuz im also assuming you read a lot slower in japanese than in your first language. hours man. sit and read for hours.

I also rarely need to look up stuff unless its some expression that I haven't seen yet like 諸刃の剣 or really specific stuff such as 三界 or 柄無し(つかなし) in the right context. Did 9k cards of 10k but I never really payed attention to it, premade decks aren't a complete waste of time but I'd say its not worth the effort. Started reading and then I made my own deck of 3.5k cards up till now.

Can you give a reason why reading for hours straight vs in intervals is more advantageous assuming that the total cumulative reading time per day is the same? I'm not sure I follow how this varies between the two:
>the faster you run into new words and seeing those words repeated in text the faster youll progress

Welcome to the club. I dropped it for now and just use this dictionary app to highlight new words I look up and use the homepage feature to find and casually highlight the common words (that I’m not assed to normally search for) inbetween episodes/chapters of Japanese content. Once I reach about 20k highlights (currently at 3.5k but I’m not done highlighting common words obviously), I’ll try Anki again for the harder/obscure words I’ve already come across that I haven’t learned well in the meantime before then. >how many hours average do you input?
I must say that kind of sounds like you just said "for how many hours on average do you put it in" which is hilarious and vaguely gay. Unfortunately I have no idea. Anywhere from 0 to a few on any given day.

Most of the time what I actually """"""read""""""" is something inane like youtube comments or twitter conversations or 5ch threads. Of course the level of the language there is nothing amazing, kind of like the English you see on 4chan. I watch vtubers, especially those 1-hour long videos where they just talk--kind of the same "sophistication" of the language as Pewdiepie's average video has.

A vice of mine is that I frequently sink myself in a dictionary and then I keep looking at related entries, related kanji, whatever. I end up more or less remembering it all.

I've recently started to read less braindead things such as wikipedia and modern books. Wikipedia, not so much because it's japanese "input", but because I want to know; usually a few articles at a time. I just read the entire article and then the footnotes too for the lolz to see if i can read the names of the people who authored or issued the publications: most of the time, I read them no problem. Sometimes I get interested in the source links themselves and especially if it's a news article I go read it too. Same goes for web articles I find mentioned elsewhere.

Books, to be honest, most of the time i cba. I can't find something in modern lit that'd keep my attention. Maybe I should just read a Meiji era classic. There's a light novel series by 西尾維新 that I've been forcing myself to read; i intend to finish it and move onto old lit probably.

I watch almost no anime and there are no novel games that im playing. Last anime I watched was Citrus because I liked the name. I didn't know what it was about before I started it but I loved the drama. That said, psycho lesbians feel like a knee-jerk reaction to me. I think they're already obsolete. The entire anime had no words that confused me.

Sometimes I read Chinese poetry. I find it more fun than light novels.

>masturbating
A single eromanga propels me into heaven for multiple days. Occasionally I'll watch a full AV.

The problem with this all is that there are no days on which I do all of the above. Not infrequently I don't touch Japanese at all, for various reasons. I tried to stay objective while writing this post but it's hard. If there's something you find weird and you just want to know, feel free to demand specification.

I just use this J-E dictionary app because it was already my go-to dictionary prior to the monolingual transition, I use it to search words I don't know in the monolingual dictionary's definitions, the cute homepage gimmick is nice for casual mining of words, and I like the convenient list feature. That last point is the most important one for gauging one's vocab before using anki, so if anyone else knows a better listing method please share. I just like using this one because it's a quick transition from searching for a word to adding it to a list, and since I'm a zoomer I'm always on my phone.

for one thing he’s a fan of jamal, that’s already horrible
secondly he’s vague about his methods and pretends to never have studied but is magically good
even if he really didn’t though, it’s obvious very few people can magically absorb a second language like that esp one like japanese
so what’s the point of his input?
not much, just more chances to stunt on everyone as “the guy who effortlessly learned japanese in 5 minutes a day doing random shit”

Sure.

>what is your motivation for learning japanese?
I want to be somewhere where I'm not.

>what other skills do you have worthy of note?
None.

>what is your definition of fluency and are you there yet?
I think basic fluency would mean being able to talk and to process what you hear or read in a flowing manner. When speaking Japanese I have to search my mind for expressions, so that is not flowing. I also don't read in a flowing manner, mainly because my reading speed is not up to speed.

That's less of an issue than you think it is and it levels out over time. It also probably happens more often than you think with native speakers in their own native language.

Don't be a purist in your language learning methods. A lot of things work perfectly fine and anything that helps you do more of whatever you're doing in the language is something you should consider doing.

8 months or so. I just watch Japanese subbed anime and eat manga (the latter far less though). I also mine words and use anki so standard fare in general. The reason I want to do anime cards is because right now I don't have the context attached to the words I mine despite because I forget where I got them from and that seems like a benefit I'm missing out of. Sometimes I'll remember the exact context from which I pulled a word and it makes remembering it a lot easier so I'm thinking anime cards could make that more common.

Learning kana, kanji, Japanese, making use of an SRS, and being aware of levels of politeness in Japanese.
He also tells them to consume lots of Japanese media. His plan seems kinda like Matt's, but with more spoonfed information.

reading is a paradox where the only way you can become able to read is to read but you can't read yet but you have to read anyways.
anything else is supplementary like anki or writing stuff down. that isn't reading but maybe it will help you read a word in kanji or something idk.
you can just look words up and keep forgetting if you want to. eventually they will start sticking. maybe in the beginning using a text hooker is better so you can just hover over the word and the effort is near 0 so you can keep going for longer periods of time.

If you've gone through vncore or core2k, you should be able to read a good amount of the words used in any novel, even if you still have to look words up on a dictionary.
Then again, even the easiest novel might seem relatively difficult if you don't have a certain foundation to build upon.

do DIY sentence cards farmed from your reading till you can understand 90% of easy stuff like SoL moe or shonen aimed at kids
THEN start just reading and looking up as you go
if you go into reading with no foundation of course you’ll be frustrated, the guys recommending it to you are dumb
sentence cards are a great way to set up that foundation
