What you're describing, is a NEET.

And just to make something clear: i've spent 8 years in my room barely showering and with minimal food, slowly spiraling into psychosis.
Later on in life i spent 3 more years and was going semi-insane again.
Now it's better, but basically my point is that i've been there, and it's not something you should be proud of, but most importantly automatically assume that's what it takes to be an otaku.

In fact, otaku (in the classical meaning of the word) do strive to find fellow otaku and create smell but solid communities they can feed their inherent human need to socialize.
They actively use their obsessions and their hobbies to meet other people and create social groups.
Nowdays younger otakus shy away from that because they don't want to seem "cringe", and they don't want to be made fun of, and they think the only way to be cool is to be a loner.
This isn't "standard".
Nor "required".
This is a self imposed mental block based on the potential perception strangers will have of you on the internet, or the possibility of someone rejecting you IRL.
This isn't how things used to be, nor do they have to be this way right now.
To build a social circle of people that have your same interests, isn't non otaku like.
To hang out with them and express yourself normally and not constantly shielding yourself with 5000 layers of memes, abstract humor and irony, isn't non otaku like.

You can have friends, and talk normally to them.
The push for fear induced perma NEETdom is destroying yong otakus and corrupiting them into something else, something much uglier and more dangerous that over time explodes into violence and hard towards others and themselves.

When my drinking got really bad I would never leave the house except late night to get fast food and booze. which roughly means

"A word used as slang by young people to mean someone who is unusually informed about some field or thing."

This means that being an otaku is likewise to the word "geek" in American culture. It refers to someone who knows a lot and is passionate about something that is not necessarily academic, as opposed to the word "nerd". It's not just limited to manga or anime. There are train otakus, history otakus, etc.

You are not special or different because you consume Japanese media. You are not better than anyone else for it. There is nothing wrong with it, but stop having a security complex. If you are a NEET, come to terms with the fact that you are useless to society and stop drowning in self pity. Try to improve your life before you look down on others who may have different interests from you as "normies"

I would say in order to make friends, the best thing to do is try to empathize with people. Try not to judge people unless they are pressuring you into doing something you find wrong or they disagree with you fundamentally. If you have common interests, try to discuss them or doing something together related to them, and you could have a good time. People value people being confident and genuine. This means that you can be emotionally vulnerable, but don't have to necessarily show of all of your imperfections and insecurities at once. If you don't judge people and try to be calm and nice, they will probably appreciate that and treat you the same.

If you want my definition of a normalfag it goes beyond not knowing internet culture a normalfag is someone who is able to fit into the top of the social hierarchies that they have everything handed to them and everything good happen to them in life these are the perfect people that actual losers aspire to be if you're happy with your life have many friends a good paying job married have kids or are in a relationship or take part in normalfag activities such as drugs sex clubs bars hookups house parties the list goes on and if you check all of this or most of this you are to me a normalfag a failed normalfag is different from a normalfag because failed normalfags are people who tried to be popular and successful and climb to the top of the social latter but they fell and ended up becoming a loser out of circumstance.

Staying at home all the time doesn't necessarily mean hikikomori a hikikomori is a neet who refuses to leave their bedroom in their parents house while in otaku is someone like say Tomoko from Watamote she stays at home engages in her hobbies and interest and has social problems but still goes to school and has at least one friend.
