the vast majority (including native english speakers) don't realize that. it's a situation where a very tiny minority of powerful people claimed it was offensive and have slowly willed it into being. eventually the lie disseminates through the pseudo privileged classes (the kind of people who browse reddit) and that reinforces the supposed offensive nature of it. but was it actually offensive to someone at some point before? not really. jamal is basically just a snobby signalling elitist forcing you to bend the knee when he tells you not to use a term.

>finally decided it was time to suffer and to at least try and learn to phonetically read a lot of the runes that would pop up in the digital space so I can at least pretend it's more efficient for machine translating than waiting on OCR(or at least that's the lie I'm telling myself right now)
>started working on learning hiragana with itazuraneko
>realized almost immediately that with small rune sets that I was starting to create memory cheats that just wouldn't hold once I started adding more and more runes
>said fuck that noise, made actual flash cards, started working in additional sets of runes by short introduction of just overviewing, doing light rune to phonetic association(rune presented, phoinetic answered) within the set and then a bit heavier doing phonetic to rune association(phonetic presented, rune written replied)
>after that would throw the new rune introductions into the rest of the established stack and would drill multiple times heavily on phonetic to rune association with occasional rune to phonetic runs
>tfw actually working really well, much more effective than just running through them on the site(even though yes I know you can do the "write kana" exercises on it, too)
>tfw also realizing that despite that it's working really well, there's also random fonts that completely fuck up the visual representation of a number of strokes in runes which is going to be a bitch to get used to

Kind of really wish I started with the flash cards. I've noticed most of the runes I'm slower to remember are from the first few sets that I had developed off of learning on the website only while the later sets that I introduced purely through flash cards were super fast to pick up and held steady even after introduction into the larger group. I mean sure, something something it's just fresher information in the mind or whatever, but just about everything improved when I moved from primarily trying to regurgitate phonetic to a presented rune to forcing myself to write out a rune to a presented phonetic. Not to mention it's a lot more convenient and easy to drive motivation to flip through actual flash cards in hand when I'm not doing anything in particular than it is to drill through a text field on a website.
But oh well. Progress is progress, I guess.

>> No.22059590

it's not elites who think it's offensive tho, if you ask any japanese-american (whose opinion actually matters whether it's offensive or not because they're english speaking japanese) then they'll 100% say yes. you can't then decide it's not offensive because white ignorants dont think so even though they'd never have the potential to be offended by it anyway

So let me see if I understand this correctly. Hiragana and Katakana are more like an alphabet where as Kanji is basically words as symbols? That and the reason that you can't use just Hiragana the way English uses letters to make words is because you wouldn't be able to tell where one word ends and another begins? If that's the case what is Hiragana for exactly? Is it like conjunctions and shit?

Hiragana is mostly particles/basic words that are easy to distinguish, kanji is just regular old words with easy mode etymology. It's kind of like how you can see English words like phosphorus/photograph/phantasmagoria and figure that "oh, this pho/pha root seems to have to do with light/fire", or look at incubate/succubus/cubicle and think "oh, they all have to do with sitting on eggs/dicks/chairs". Except you have one symbol to cover all the light/sitting derived words instead, so it's very convenient. Kanji may have different readings depending on the word, which makes sense because English also has words like "phosphorus" and "Lucifer" that are written different even though both mean something like light-having.

They're used in combination so that you can easily tell where words start and end without spaces in between, and there's kind of a "kanji = primary concepts/objects + hiragana = where these things stand in relation to each other" feel. Full-hiragana text exists for children's games etc. but is a pain in the ass to read, there's also furigana which is kanji with training wheels attached (each kanji gets little superscript text that tells you how it's supposed to be read).

Disclaimer: My Japanese is utter shit so this is probably all nonsense.

agreed. that's why i don't bother studying anything i haven't actually seen used, and on multiple occasions. this also means that for people who prioritize simply comprehending their preferred input (as opposed to "collecting all the words"), there will be words they just don't often see in their sphere of entertainment even if they're considered common by other people. look how drastically word frequency differs between the newspaper freq calculator vs the VN/LN calculator for example

you could, it's just really annoying and kanji makes it easier
as a very rough rule of thumb, kanji are used for nouns and stems of verbs and adjectives, while hiragana are used to put verbs and adjectives into different tenses, and as particles that signify subject, object, location, etc
you *could* write everything in hiragana or katakana if you wanted to, it just makes for a very unpleasant reading experience

be able to play my favorite JRPGs in japanese
3. be able to watch anime raw
4. be able to have stimulating and expressive convos with natives

pretty much all the same. goal 1 is complete. goal 2 is virtually complete just need a few thousand more vocab to smooth the process which i'm gradually stacking up at a steady pace that's working well so far with my new card style. goal 4 is complete.

goal 3 i kinda set aside bc i realized it wasn't worth it for me to force. i've still watched some things raw (really easy things like のんのんびより and 三ツ星カラーズ -- and even then toggling the subs on when i miss stuff), some j-subbed(stuff like このすば and whatever's available on daiweeb thats not super easy for me), and some eng subbed (everything else) depending on what i feel like; and i think i'll continue doing that.

yeah it's harder to transcribe when you don't know some of the words but that's... obvious? correctly hearing words is both a top-down and a bottom-up process. you hear words correctly from both the raw sounds coming in, and predictions made from prior experience. if you haven't heard a word spoken often before there's no guarantee you'll be able to transcribe it correctly. that being said i'm still able to more often than not, so once again you're wrong about everything :)

I actually don't know how the audition/interview will be conducted, whether or not there'll be a rep from Universal Japan there for the process, but I wanted to try to do the intro/outro bilingually, if possible.

I know very little Japanese, and can introduce myself just fine, but I don't know what to say on the way out. "Sayounara" is what you get taught is "goodbye" in Japanese, but apparently native speakers never use it, because "sayounara" implies a permanent goodbye. What's a good thing to say in Japanese on the way out of an interview? I think "mata ne" is too informal, as is "bai bai." I would want to say the equivalent of "Thank you for your time, goodbye."

Exactly. N1 is the minimum to be able to satisfactorily begin to understand anything but you have to aim for beyond that.

stop playing dumb. i'm obviously trying to say that statements like this:
>N1 is the minimum to be able to satisfactorily begin to understand anything
are bullshit.
not every single N1 word is required to understand native material and many people's own experience of reading native material has shown that. there is a varied mixture of words in every context. it's very possible to not see all or even most of the "N1 selected vocabulary/kanji" despite reading multiple things of personal interest (and seeing lots of words that are NOT even in the jlpt at all). why would 捕吏 or 融資 (N1) be in a 恋愛漫画? please try to be more rational

Learning Japanese is like learning any language. The only reason most people quit Japanese is because of Kanji and because of the grammar.
>Kanji
The Heisig system is proven to be the best one. It takes some time to learn Kanji and the idea to not learn Kanji directly but instead learn stories for a certain English word seems retarded, but in the long run this is the only way to always remember the 2k/3k Kanji.
>grammar
Now this is a bitch. There is a top tier way to learn grammar but it's only good for science. If you aren't studying on a college/university this could be too difficult. There are other approaches like in "casual" textbooks which try to just explain the grammar without going too deep into scientific logic (a language is always a man made tool, so there is no natural logic but a certain pattern still exists). Let's just say you will never be satisfied without learning the scientific analysis of the Japanese grammar, but it's more than enough to learn with normal textbooks.

Now here is the "perfect" way to learn Japanese if you are a robot.
>1. learn all 3k Kanji with Heisig
>2. learn grammar and vocabulary with Anki
>3. see grammar and vocabulary in full texts and practice (write!)
>4. talk in Japanese
>5. repeat 2. 3. and 4. with more challenging stuff

Now here is the HUGE problem. The most important part in learning a new language is motivation.
>1 to 3 months Heisig only
>months for learning grammar and vocabulary
>months for practicing it
>months for speaking
>months to do this all over again
And except for learning with Heisig everything else is not that easy to plan. What is the grammar and vocabulary you should learn first? That's the reason why textbooks are mandatory without help. But even then you need motivation. Also only learning Kanji with Heisig feels like you don't learn Japanese at all. I would say maybe waste a few months if not years to learn Japanese "like in Japan" and then learn Heisig to know that Heisig is the best way.

Sadly, I learned Japanese for 8 years and am fluent in Japanese but it was a tough journey and the beginning was only possible because I studies Japanese. The reason why it's sad is because I don't know how to survive the beginning without help. The textbooks are great, but until you understand anything (more than just senpai or hai) in anime you need years. Especially the particle "wo" is nearly impossible to hear in anime (and even worse it isn't even spoken most of the time), so you will need to learn for year before really understanding anime. The only good thing is that if you keep learning (especially if you learn Kanji with Heisig) you make huge progress after you understand anime. The sad reality is that learning Japanese will take years and it's only worth it if you need Japanese every day. The same with every other language. Only if you are a kid you have the time to waste your time with useless languages, but after you are older you either learn a language which you use (and therefore don't forget) or you waste your time because you forget everything you learn.

Since the topic of qolibri is up, what theme does everyone use?

Here are two I made:
Dark - https://pastebin.com/raw/LF8MMtdn
Light - https://pastebin.com/raw/pJgh0QF2
( font: http://jikasei.me/font/genshin/ )

Currently I use the light one since dark themes don't really work well in qolibri. Certain elements can't be altered by the theme and always show up as black, which makes them near impossible to see if you aren't using a light background. It's especially a problem in 広辞苑 and 大辞泉 since both of those make abundant use of such elements (the latter in particular becomes semi-unusable since it has no line breaks and the entry numbers for definitions turn pretty much invisible).

>According to Wolfgang Butzkamm & John A. W. Caldwell (2009), comprehensible input, defined by Krashen as understanding messages, is indeed the necessary condition for acquisition, but it is not sufficient. Learners will crack the speech code only if they receive input that is comprehended at two levels. They must not only understand what is meant but also how things are quite literally expressed, i.e. how the different meaning components are put together to produce the message. This is the principle of dual comprehension. In many cases both types of understanding can be conflated into one process, in others not. The German phrase “Wie spät ist es?” is perfectly understood as “What time is it?” However learners need to know more: *How late is it? That’s what the Germans say literally, which gives us the anatomy of the phrase, and the logic behind it. Only now is understanding complete, and we come into full possession of the phrase which can become a recipe for many more sentences, such as “Wie alt ist es?” / “How old is it?” etc. According to Butzkamm & Caldwell (2009:64) “dually comprehended language input is the fuel for our language learning capacities.” [8] It is both necessary and sufficient.
