if you learn a word through core6k, you'll know exactly one english translation for one japanese word, and have a reference point for it only through that one sentence you saw on that deck.
on the other hand, if you learn it by reading some eroge or watching some anime, you'll know what it means in that context.

The thing that triggers me about "mining" is that people waste so much time by mining all those new words and whatnot and it's completely pointless. If it doesn't, then it means you didn't need it. No, I don't, because in a single session I just need to look up a word I don't recognize once. If I stumble upon it again another day I might do the same again, and by the third time I usually recognize it without problem.
Meanwhile I do absolutely 0 anki reps and I'm comfortable enough with my everyday kanji/vocab knowledge to get through normal life in Japan without issues. And all the anki autists spend 15-30minutes (or more?) every day re-hearsing words on their deck in the hope they may one day encounter them in the wild (which, after 1000~2000 kanji, it's very unlikely).

I live in Japan and talk to natives every day, consume native material, and have no issues whatsoever. The point is that after 1000-2000 kanji (1000 really is enough) you can drop anki because it loses usefulness and you can just move on to actual material and conversation/output production instead. Not that 1000 kanji/vocab is anywhere near enough to be even remotely proficient in the language, but it's the point where you actually should be expected to naturally produce and consume at your own pace.

We all learn at our own pace. I've always been quick with vocabulary intake in all the languages I've learned, so I guess it might not be the same for everybody. Just talking about my own experience.
