I just wanted to share some insight which helped me greatly in retaining vocabulary.
I always thought I had really poor retention compared to other learners for some reason, like something was wrong with my memory. Until I realized there is a difference between what you logically acknowledge to be the most important thing to focus on and what you are actually focusing on.

It's a subtle difference that people don't talk about much. Where are you _mentally_ putting emphasis when learning a new word?
For example, I completely understood that the most important thing was to learn the meaning of a word as a whole. But I would still look at the meaning of the individual kanji (as a mnemonic) and at pronunciation, and also would sometimes think about the strokes.
All of that is good to do, of course, BUT without realizing it I was accidentally focusing more that stuff than on the word's meaning. I think subconsciously I focused mostly on pronunciation, and secondly on the mnemonics, and didn't really focus too hard on the word meaning even though I always said that was the most important thing.

Once I really payed attention to what I was paying attention to, and made sure I was putting heavy focus on the word's meaning more than anything else, then my vocab retention dramatically increased.
