Am I the only one on /jp/ who's social life is entirely online?

>> No.2383256

Probably. Mine is mostly in Gensokyo. And various Japanese high schools. And within various households.

But when I'm bored of talking to no-one for a month or two, I call up a few friends and we hang out for a while. Then we go back to not speaking with each other for another few months. Repeat, ad nauseum.
and what the fuck is an 'online social life'? Talking to a stranger on mmo's or IRC isn't being 'social'.

More or less. I do talk to some people over MSN, but i prefer the mentality and the anonymity that /jp/ offers. Direct contact just isn't my thing. It pains me though, that /jp/ has gone downhill recently. This is pretty much the only place i enjoy being. I don't know where i should go when /jp/ finally dies completely.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who feels this way.

All the old forums I used to hang out on either went under or have turned into another 4chan clone. I don't even care much for /jp/, I just take comfort in the fact that people who share my bitter sentiments are also lurking around here and suck it up.

I don't think I could handle going back to /a/, it would probably send me into a spiral of depression. It's sad that I have to come to /jp/ to restore my comfort zone.

>> No.2383766

I've more online friends and contacts that help me with aquiring media and just talking about problems then I do irl. I thought I'd chime in. I don't do well with direct contact and I only have one friend from high school which I still talk to on IRC from time to time. I used to ICQ a lot but stopped. I don't twitter, LJ, MYspace, Facebook, etc. I only email or irc now a days. I do get to see some college mates and convention friends when I am at a convention once a year if I bump into them but normally they are working in another area of the convention then I am working at so we rarely meet. I've not met some old college friends in a few years now at the con because the con I go to is split into 3 buildings. One area is directly across the hotel while the other is abuot a block away. I work mainly in the hotel at the con.

Also I tend to prefer online better as I can communicate better with my mind and thoughts then in irl where everything is all snap judgements before you say anything. At least with online you get to explore the mind and connect better then if/when you met in person you're not going on the persons looks & chrisma first. You have a connection with the person before hand making conversation better. Unfortunately this anon is under oppression from family right now. Not to download my problems but my mom has gone a bit 'wierd' as my dad puts it or I think she's kind of losing her mind all paranoid thinking people are out to get her and her family so inturn only my dad's working right now and I can't leave the house for her fear of people bugging the house and shit. She also thinks everything online is virtual and worthless and people are jus tout to to get you and use you online to make money off you and shit and that everything online is tainted by bad people and thus she's cut me off the computer. I'm pretty much under an iron rule that I can only go out to get groceries or library then have to stay home all the time because it's the only way to 'protect' her. I don't have wireless in the hosue so I value the moments I can get on the laptop and silently gain knowledge to GTFO from this situation with some life/survival skills and what to pack into a bag before I AWOL. Right now I'm allowed tv and radio only. Thankfully I don't have to sit in her bedroom with her always talkign about god this and god that. Sorry for venting. I'm in a very depressed situation with a unique problem.

>> No.2383872

>>2383766
Forgot tot mention that she pretty much stays upstairs in her room all the time and turned the washroom into a quasi kitchen. While I don't mind the bathroom turned kitchen as in europe or asia or other small home places they use many useable or close to water places so I'm ok with that but she almost never leaves the house. I mean she probably leaves the house ~10times a year and never leaves the second floor. SHe used to be all tv all the time and thinks that if it's on TV it /has/ to be real. She's got a 'god' complex and thinks she's always right and I can't argue with her because well she's got a university background where as I only have a HS background and my linguistics kungfu is not like Noam Chompskys to argue with her. Why do I like 4chan and some of the boards here? IT's because I like anime and other asian related things. I find talking on the boards I can get related media that I can't find locally or on TV and people online tend to speak more truth on things and can get sources to back thier sayigns. Not to say TV does not back thier comments without sources but I don't trust tv and the news much. I always take a grain of salt to that. It's mostly sensationalised news and 'infotainment'. She was showing shit about stuff she recorded on CNN about irc hacking and telespoofing which I knew like back in 2000 and stuff and cnn's coverage on that shit didn't fully cover some stuff. Saying nothing online is secure and shit. They didn't mention anything about proxies and such. Anyways.. sorry for my venting. I'm new to /jp/ but I think I'll stay a bit more. I'm normally a /cgl/, /k/, and occassional /h/.

It's much easier to do this after college (where you are surrounded by people).

>> No.2383958

My social life is almost entirely online. The number of people on my IM lists has gotten ridiculous over the years, perhaps because I constantly socialize online as a way to make up for my lack of friends in RL. I've met some very nice, intelligent people online and I don't really regret anything. The people I can trust the most are online.

I feel bad for you guys who's only friend is /jp/. I don't think I could handle not having someone to talk to "face-to-face", since I'm too shy otherwise at college.

I work as a administrative staff at a mental and addictive health center so I can feel for that anons case. He's just venting because he's only got (assuming) small amounts of time online when IIRC he can connect to the internet. Think of it like the Mythbusters episode of 'cabin fever'. If you're stuck inside a place and not allowed to get out with no real simulants of interaction for a long time without people you slowly start buildingup angry, frustration, and over a long period of time start to go a bit crazy.

To the anon of that post. Keep the faith and strength up You sound like you're being held back to explore. I'm sure eventually the clouds would clear.

Why not? The only real difference between you talking to someone IRL and through some means on the internet is that you aren't physically visible to each other. It's not like the previous generations anymore where pretty much the only means to socialize is outside. Lots of friendships and even relationshits can and are blooming through internet means these days.

The most common thing I see people saying is the 'evils' of online and predators. You know, yes I have to admit without face to face contact people tend to think they can get away with more stuff but it's liek the 'bad apple' saying where every bushel of apples you'll have some bad apples.

I don't see much of a difference of meeting or talking to people online then on the phone or in person. Hell you can have crazies in CHURCH as well in the house of god and such. Even people on the street. I like online better and have seen many a good tales of goodness happening with friendships, relationships, forward moving communities, and constructive building of ideas.

I prefer an online social life since it allows me to take it easy, and I can clearly say what I want to someone without having to leave home. I haven't been out to a normal person's house in about six years except for some girl. People offline usually make me rage more anyways, since they never talk about anything as interesting as the things I find on the internet.

The internet is also how I met my girlfriend and wound up moving next to her. Though we still spend about half of our time talking online. She's the only one I really go out to see.

>> No.2387067

I don't trust people enough to want to make friends with them. Sadly, this attitude is also carried over to the internet, so I have no one to talk to online.

I agree many people I know live far away and anyone local and immediate around me like neighbours I have nothing of interest withthem. It's all trimmed front lawns, keeping up withthe joneses types, my lawn is better then your lawn, my kids are better then your kids and old foggy seniors or people way past thier prime. Then agian where I live the area is very accessable to manythings I like and trails I love to ride my bike too. All the people in my area tend to be all bitching abou tthe cost of fuel hike prices and food prices when I see them at the grocery store like 1.5km away driving a honking SUV or car. If they walked or rode thier bike to many of thier places they go to in a ~2.0-2.5km radius they would be more healthy and save a shit load more full them bitch out about older age fat.

Online wins. Only thing better is if the damn transporter worked (R.I.P Scotty) and we can DCC all the like minded friends to a room to talk and enjoy.
