Are these worth remembering?

I've been studying Japanese for three years now ahead of a Japan trip and I enjoyed it so much I kept going. I started out with Human Japanese (which has probably been the most helpful) and have been doing vocab and sentence practice (memrise, Duolingo, drops, etc.), kanji practice (wanikani), listening practice (going to sleep to anime every night, YouTube, podcasts, video games) and taking to people (hello talk). I am trying to focus on how much I have improved over where I was, but I can't help but feel like I'm stuck currently. On one hand I can look back and be proud that I can catch some words from anime, read hundreds of kanji, and have spoken Japanese to native speakers. However, I can't help but look ahead and see an ocean in front of me. I still have probably 1500 kanji to hit the magical 2,000 mark. I looked at an easy NHK article today and its exhausting and incredibly time consuming for me to read through it, and communicating with people on hello talk still finds me doing frequent rewrites, grammar lookups, and mistakes even with basic to slightly complex sentences. Some days I feel like I have this awesome foundation and I'm just a good month of studying away from it all clicking and basic typing and speaking is not going to be such a struggle. Other days I think I'm totally wasting my time and after three years I still have to look up basics like how does a どちらが sentence work again? I don't expect to be fluent anytime soon, but I would love to get to the point where I can have elementary level conversations without straining so much, and listen to Japanese media without getting lost several sentences at a time despite subtitles telling me there are words I think I should know.

Have any of you out there experienced this? How did you get passed it? Have you ever been frustrated feeling like you should be further? Is there something that finally made it 'click' for you?
