I started Japanese last year but took it seriously on April 2020. I know hiragana and katakana (with some hiccups), I know basic kanji meanings from RTK 1.

I'm learning vocab from the MIA Tango N5 anki deck. I found very easy to learn the first 40 words, but when it came to the rest, I found out that I could remember it quite well. Some words that cause me trouble are : school (high-school, middle-school, university), library, homework) etc. Is this normal for new learners.

Do I need to immerse more? At the moment I find it very hard to immerse because I find it painful that I can't understand anything. Thanks in advance.

you create mental dictionary entries for words and sentences. so when you read, you will simply "get" the japanese with much less effort.

looking up every word that you don't know as you read and constantly doing this for eternity gets old, tedious and inefficient very quickly. anki's job is so you don't have to look up as many words while you are reading. especially ones you've looked up before. looking up less words = more enjoyment from immersing

imagine reading your favorite newspaper article and you looking up a word in your dictionary takes you like 30 or so seconds. the next day you read it again and you come across a word and you look it up again in the dictionary. you notice you looked it up before, weird, you thought you would know it by now. a week later you find that same word and you look it up again without realizing it. now you are just wasting time. Imagine if instead of wasting 5 minutes looking up that same word over again you simply added it to anki and did 3 reps for 1 minute total. you'll have a 90% chance you won't have to look that word up in the future. now your learning is improving in efficiency. you are actually wasting less time. at least in theory

lol i actually basically do this by printing out the paper flashcard versions of my new cards for anki. ive made the workflow for that very efficient so i can print out as many cards as i want within 3 minutes or so. the only thing thats time consuming is that it takes me like 10 minutes to cut out 100 paper flashcards if im doing that many but id be wasting that time doing stupid shit anyways.

i also do this form of rote memorization for it though its slightly different. it works extremely well for me since a lot of my uni was just rote memorizing shit and thats how i did it so my brain is used to remembering stuff like that. idk what it is about the paper flashcards but im able to remember words like 4 times faster if i hold the paper in my hands than if im doing it on anki and my retention for those new words is like 20% higher than if i just did them in the program not even joking.
