secondly yes you'll learn better from focused reading over flashcards BUT whether or not you can actually manage focused reading depends on:
1) how much you're interested in what you're reading
2) how comprehensible that is to you
things at a lower level mostly belong to a couple of niche genres so if a beginner hates those genres then telling them to read will be useless because there won't be anything that meets both criteria for them

as far as "you need to practice reading to read i.e. you've got to read easier content which you might hate", it still stands that doing flashcards means you'll be able to get it over with faster

this legitimately is the most important aspect. Sometimes you need to suffer htrough something beyond your level, but generally you need to read something that isn't impossible. Rote memorization does not enable you to immediately read hard material though. Authors have their own writing style that regularly throws "proper" grammar and vocab out the window. They use slang that you've never seen in your cards, "dirty" writing that is harder to read, etc. Getting used to a variety of writing styles is a crucial part in learning how to read.

Going through a ton of flashcards won't help nearly as much as you think, but it certainly helps somewhat. People who are arguing to read are not arguing against Anki as a whole, they are arguing to add reading and slow down your deck to manageable levels. This way, reading reinforces your memorization and teaches you "real" grammar/style that a grammar guide will never touch on

reviewing cards is also good, yes. Before you know any words, you have to learn them and cards are pretty much the only way to do that. There are some folk here who argue for reading to start day 1 but I disagree with them. A foundation is needed, and vocab is certainly that foundation. However "really big number of words memorized" does not directly translate to "reduction in time reading." There are, in my opinion, two primary reasons why:

1. Author style, slang, and improper grammar are as significant and prevalent in Japanese writing as they are in any media. Becoming accustomed to these things that Anki does not teach will take time regardless of the number of Kanji you know, so it is worth getting started early.
2. The risks associated with over-reliance on Anki are too great. If you don't reinforce with reading, you have a much more likely chance of burnout. Breaking the monotony of flashcards helps keep you engaged with the material on a daily basis and makes each day feel new (because you are reading new things as opposed to just getting x new words)

another interesting fact about old japanese orthography is there was no punctuation so the only way you could tell if a sentence was ending was if it was the 終止形 of the verb (or some other ending triggered by 係り結び). thankfully in modern japanese you don't need to know which form each verb ends on to understand it
