If I was to grow up anywhere it'd be a rural town. But the few times I've visited my aunts house where she's like a whole state away and the vast difference between the suburb I live in, and her house which just has acres of land and a forest in the backyard was really wonderful as a kid. Rural japan sounds really nice in that regard.

But then I'd have no internet and at that point there'd be no point to anything.

Also the social culture doesn't seem that great, but I also never grew up in it so I don't know how I'd feel about it if I had engaged with it as a child.

Growing up in Japan? No, but growing old there? Yes. I can't really picture myself growing up elsewhere, I might as well be a completely different person at that point. Almost like wiping your memory to win a prize; I wouldn't be me.
Now, as for growing old there... I pretty much gave up on my life for a few years, but I've recently picked myself back up and am working towards a dream now. That dream being moving to Hokkaido, preferably a rural place near Asahikawa. I've always been into woodworking, and that's pretty much the woodworking capitol of Japan. I want to study and work comfy at a workshop in my free time till I can manage on my own without relying on TEFL for income. Living off being a writer who does woodworking in his freetime would be ideal, or the reverse. But living off those? That's not something you can just plan to happen, a lot of hard work, skill, and luck involved. Will keep pursuing the dream though.
