2816561 No.2816561 [Reply] [Original]

It's been quite a while since we had our last headphone thread. I'm pretty sure a good number of /jp/ anons have upgraded their cans.

I've recently moved up to a Sennheiser HD650, but "moved down" to a portable iBasso mad05 dac/amp from a table amp since I plan to travel a lot this summer vacation.

Now, what do you use to listen to your lossless touhou mixes, /jp/?

I have some lower price-ranged but good quality headphones (ie, Grado SR80, iGrado, Senheisser PX100), but am currently lacking an decent amp. I'm thinking of getting a Apogee Duet when I can scrounge up some more bones, as I've heard it makes everything sound just beautiful, and is designed for use with Logic which I'm using quite a bit these days.

I also have a pair of Pioneer TRE-D800 wireless "5.1" headphones that set me back almost $300 - worst purchase I've ever made. The crappy 900Hz IR makes it so that the reception cuts off unless you are in LOS with the IR array or a single reflection off. Also, the high-range is too much and while the low-range is lacking. And the virtual surround really doesn't work all that well either.

Yeah, well pretty much all headphones are virtual surround - it's not like you can pack front/rear speakers in the headphones and actually make out the difference.

And virtual surround is more dependent on the recording equipment than the playback, actually. Like, if you are using HRTF, it would work ideally if based on a mold of your head. Or perhaps using the so-called "holophonics" technique - which can do surround a good deal better than the current 5.1/7.1 speaker setups. Don't underestimate psychoacoustics - give this demo a try with your headphones if you haven't before:

I really don't think these are meant to be portable, it's so you can have reasonably high quality sound without waking up neighbors/spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a speaker system.

A lot of closed ear comfort will depend purely on the headphones. I have glasses and some don't bother my ears even when the arms are pinched for hours, while others will ache after only a few minutes.

>> No.2819803

>>2816918
amplifiers have two basic purposes:

1. To provide power a demanding headphone. An example of this would be to try using headband headphones on a PSP or DS, and then try using an IEM or one of those small earphones. The difference in volume (when maxed) is very noticeable. That's because larger headphones require more power.

2. Building on #1, hi-fi headphones are built to try to recreate the exact sound as close as possible, while adding a bit of its own "flavor" to it (that is why there are so many headphones and they aren't easy to choose from). And in order to bring out that potential, one needs to use a proper amplifier that provides enough ohm oomph (basically). Thing is amps also add their own flavors to music, so purchasing headphones and amps should depend on what kind of genre you like the best.

>>2817253
>>2817779
Full-sized headphones look retarded in public? I guess it's a culture thing, but where I live, 9 out of 10 wear them except those playing a PSP/DS or those above 30. It's actually an "in" thing here these days.

Yeah I tried one of those.
I wouldn't buy into any of that it's just marketing.
The cans I tried were Ultrasone HFI 700.

I ultimately went for the 595's which I prefer. the HFI 700's were closed-backs and they had a very crisp, detailed high and mid-range and flat, even presentation (they're designed to be recording monitors), were decently comfortable (but not anywhere near as nice as the sennheisers) and as closed backs they blocked sound very well. But like closed backs they also had a muddled and weak bass (then again I like warm sound).
I think they may have had to over-compensate to present a very clear high/midrange which is hard to do in Closed-backs.

I'm not sure what any of their other cans sound like, though. I think they're gimmicky anti-magnetic shielding is responsible for significantly increased weight, however, so I'd worry about that. The 700's were quite heavy compared to the 595's that I frequently forget I'm wearing.

These things are extremely subjective, I find I like a warmer analog sound, so I've distorted by amp accordingly. It's all about finding the distortion you find most natural.

Yeah, my current desktop amps are a headroom dekstop amp and a darkvoice 337se. I prefer darkvoice's though.

so what the use of amps for desktop pc? your headphone not badass enough?

Cool bro. Gonna probably get a tube amp after I get some G1As and livewires..... oh but I need some high impedance headphones first don't I?

So are you using those suckers for portable or you got something else?

>> No.2821429

Yeah I use my 650 with my portable iBasso. I bought the portamp only for long distance train rides for summer travel, so it's the best value-for-money for me (good amp/dac for ~200USD) Powers my senns pretty well too for a portable, no complaints.

Feel sad for the people sitting next to you on the train.

And you've never thought of getting something that isolates better? HD 25-IIs? Custom IEMs?

Also, what source?

I have my own cabin for myself. And since it's a long distance speed train, 20+ hours on the countryside would be quiet enough.

If you are wealthy enough to get a private cabin then get a lisa III or somthing. lol

Ever gonna divulge your source?

>> No.2821462

oh, and source is my nintendo DSwwwwwwwww

I have IEM's but they are so not custom. Too expensive, not to mention I have to go to an audiologist.

250 USD ish for livewires plus like 50-100 for impressions? For someone with a HD650 and multiple desktop amps that don't seem like much.

Or you can save up and get some JH-13s, which would sound better than your HD 650s. xD

....wait what is the point? You are using a DS. Go get a iriver H120, damn.

Not wealthy, I pay the same. My family just has close ties with a rail transportation official, so I am always guaranteed a sleeper cabin all for myself.

The standard way is to distribute passengers equally in cabins, but in my case, they just cram some poor soul elsewhere.

>>2821473
I'm trying to travel light in a semi-backpacker sort of way, the less electronics, the better. I would not only have to charge every single on of them in the hotel, but I'd have to make sure each of them doesn't get stolen. And yes, a DS is indispensable for long train trips.

Grado SR60, here.

Thing is built like a goddamn tank; survived heaps of abuse, and pretty damn good sound quality. I did have to repair the connector once, though.

>> No.2821500

When you say train I think of something along the lines of subways or amtrak. Noisy as fuck and somewhat crammed as well.

But seriously, anything about a portapro is just gonna be bringing out artifacts with a DS, unless you are using that one synth program... maybe

Actually, I don't own any portable music player. I spend most of my time indoors whenever possible, aside from traveling which I somewhat like ...in moderate doses.

D:

Since about 95% of my time outside of my room is spent around people I don't like, I do like being able to hear music instead of their voices. I don't do much traveling though, haven't been out of town in a while.....

I want to get my own house or a sound proof room/apartment and just buy nice big studio monitors.

Nothing much fancier than what the creators probably mixed on.

I could never play the things I play through speakers unless my room was completely sound proof.

>> No.2821558

>>2821542

no, the point was that shitty headphones go better with the DS due to it's sound quality.

Meh, in any case, I'm off for now. Nice talking though, good to see other headphonefags on 4chan every once and a while.
