I think there is a balance, you can't just shit out whatever sounds right in your head, but you also wont form the right connections for a huge neurological component of language acquisition till you reach a "promise land" level of input which, practically speaking, is only going to hinder the vast majority of learners or just filter them out entirely. Which is fine, but be upfront about it.

I guess it comes down to a functionalist perspective, or utter unflappable idealism. If you want to be sure you will communicate with Japanese in a reasonable amount of time, you go with the former. Also for all this talk of "unlearning bad habits", we aren't Chinese bugmen doing the bare minimum to get by in a better country. If a person wants to improve their fluency and pronunciation, its easier to do when you can sit down with a functional foundation to build on.

I don't think it has to be a strict dichotomy. For context, I had input starting as a young teen, including living for months in Japan before I started actively learning Japanese. I'd say it was passive input, so 5 years before any real output but it wasn't something I did intentionally. yeah the idea is if youre fine with just reaching an intermediate level where you can talk in and understand some japanese then outputting early might get you there faster cuz it gives quick results in the short run
but if we're talking about long run and reaching truly high levels then inputting for many years first and outputting after that is the way to go, its slow in the beginning but later on massively outdoes the output first method and can truly bring you close to native level

the reason was explained in that vid especially that diagram, language is extremely precise and there are only a few different ways to say something the right (native/natural) way in a situation, if youre close enough natives will still understand you but not bother autistically correcting you which really sucks because you never even become aware of the small mistakes you make, kind of like how i mightve already given away that im an esl

the thing is, input/output are a flow, not mutually exclusive. My input doesn't end because I committed the sin of "early output". My input builds over of reinforced foundations that have since become second nature. I can watch live tv without subtitles and get closer and closer to 100% comprehension from that alone (currently around 75-90% depending on the broadcast) . I can read and enjoy manga, I can have conversations with Japanese both spoken and written. I personally am hyper-aware of how they talk and how they don't talk and outside of chuuni shitposting on 4chan, I do my best to parrot tried and true output. Maybe I am weird and other learners are too NPC to think to do the same but I definitely think there are plenty who aren't.
