You know what bothers me about japanese is when you try translate a sentence to english it seems like half of the small words just aren't required. Some of the sentences it feels like half of the length of the japanese version is just a bunch of shit.

the sentence in your book had kanji though not katakana so i don't see the relevance. even if you haven't done rtk you could read and understand that sentence easily, and the meaning was clear even though the kanji wasn't obvious, but even natives wouldn't be able to guess the kanji for random rare words which is why kanken is a difficult test
