A good rule of thumb is that it should be possible to tell what the weapon is supposed to do from one look. Read a couple of books on early East Asian swords, and try to find shared characteristics in the shape of the weapons.
Even when a sword has a very basic looking functional blade, it's possible to make it look exotic with eye-catching furniture (such as the blade and guard formed by one piece), or an oddly coloured blade (the historical katana White Cloud is a good example of this).

For starters, look up the Sword of Goujian, the Seven-Branched Sword, Kogarasumaru, Kokitsune, and Kusanagi no Tsurugi.
