Yet it doesn’t cover the real problem. Sure, allowing the amygdala to win the war with your prefrontal cortex is a pussy move. But after two years of on and off japanese I have a hard time thinking this is just me being too weak. I simply cannot have enough fun with learning Japanese. I think I have cracked the code on why though. I have no specific end goal, and I have no metric to know how close I am or not to that end goal. I also have no way to determine where I stack up against other people easily. Sure you can just see who can speak the better Japanese. But it’s not like in games where you can visibly see a rank, or “this person has 7k words known im only at 3k”. That kind of number based, straight forward goal idealization is lost with learning Japanese. I’m expected to compete with myself. And it’s not that I can’t do that and validate myself along the way, but I don’t have an overt goal. And I have no way of measuring how close other people are to my goal vs myself. I like competition. And Japanese is just me vs future me vs past me. Any thoughts?

Its really as simple as finding a medium you're interested in. If you like sci-fi shows, find a sci-fi show. If you like romance novels, find a romance novel. If you like streamers, watch a Japanese streamer. If you find a niche you enjoy it becomes easier.
