you can gain the ability to passably achieve certain goals in terms of partially understanding content written in another language or making yourself understood in another language, but you cannot learn it.

Does this sound familiar at all?

You’ve taken a semester of Japanese, or a year in high school. You’ve proudly mastered hiragana. Maybe katakana. You’ve noticed that everything is pronounced phonetically, and verbs only end in masu for positive situations or masen for negative situations. You’re thinking, wow, this is so much easier than Spanish, which you took several years of in high school. What’s the big deal here?

My friend, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

That example above was me after my first semester of Japanese. I loved the language, memorized the alphabet quickly, and was told my pronunciation sounded very good.

But then I went on to my second, third and fourth semester, and things got progressively more difficult.

First of all, it’s not just masu and masen. Those are just the root conjugations. There’s a lot more! I want to do something, I think I want to do something, I am currently doing something, I did something that was fun, if I do something, is it okay if I do something, I can do something, I can’t do something… The list goes on! There’s also your typical irregular verbs, and the difference between living and non living things changing the correct word you’re supposed to use. There’s also feminine and masculine ways to say things. And counting! Ugh. There’s a different way to count for people, animals, insects (which elephants somehow fall in the category of) and a bunch of other random things.

But all that being said, you muddle through, because it is a beautiful, interesting language, and you do your best! You finally master a good chunk of the conjugations, and constantly carry around a stack of 200 flash cards of verbs you’re attempting to memorize, alongside a stack of 500 kanji you’re trying to learn.

You eventually decide you’re ready to take things to the next level. So, you go to Japan to study abroad. But as soon as you get there, you recognize that no one wants to speak to you in the formal tense, which means all those conjugations you speant the last year mastering are wrong! You hope that they’ll teach you some informal speech in school at least, but instead they decide it’s a good time to introduce you to Japanese keigo which is the super formal language that we never had the occasion to use. But hey, at least it helps you understand Kenshin better. Silver lining.

So, you pick up what you can of informal speech outside of school with your friends and host family. You get a bit more comfortable with that. At least until someone informs you that you aren’t speaking informal speech, you’re speaking Osaka dialect, which will make you look very out of place anywhere else in the country.

Eventually you discover that it doesn’t matter how good your Japanese is, people will almost always respond to you in English. You speak Japanese with your English friends and your teachers more than you do with your Japanese friends. You go on long trips by yourself. If you get lost, people will approach you and tell you in English where you need to go long before you get desperate enough to ask for help.

You lose your motivation to learn. You give up and just let people speak English around you, because even though your Japanese teacher assures you that your pronunciation is very good, no one else can ever seem to understand the simple Japanese phrases you are trying to say. You enjoy your trip, but the desire to master the language seems less pressing than it ever did before.

No, Japanese is not easy. It is phonetical, but it comes with a lot of rules and subtleties that take a lot of time to learn. There are also so many cultural and contextual situations that in my experience at least, classes don’t prepare you for. We learned all the words for no, for instance, but no one really ever explained to us you aren’t supposed to say no. And if someone is insulting or admonishing you for inappropriate behavior or actions in Japanese, there’s a good chance you’ll never know it, which makes it difficult to learn how to properly behave.

You’re not just learning a language, you are learning a complex culture that greatly influences how that language should be used. And no matter how good your Japanese gets, people will always assume you can’t speak or understand the language, and try to make the situation easier for you by speaking English.

The rewards of the language and the culture are great, and I still love Japan and many of the things it has to offer. But please don’t go into learning the language thinking you’re in for an easy ride, because if you do, you’re going to get discouraged very quickly.
