here's a hot take:

the truth:
kanji isn't hard at all. in fact, learning kanji I'd actually very simple, but it requires time commitment. it's not really a matter of how hard you work at it, but rather a matter of whether or not you put in the time each day. this is true for learning japanese as a whole.

reality:
everyone is severely misguided and wastes their time doing stupid shit like rtk, kklc, wanikani, so called "kanji in context" (I own both books, it's not actually in context) etc and then they cry online and think it's hard because they're using a bad method which doesn't work and that makes it become much harder than it really is.

the truth:
japanese grammar is quite simple. at least, compared to english grammar anyway.

reality:
everyone fails to truly understand grammar because they are using bad guides and textbooks who's authors also do not understand the rules and teach common mistakes such as using は as if it were が and に as if it were で (example: 公園に遊ぶ)

this seems to be a common trend, but in a way I am also thankful because it works as a filter to keep the retards out of the real japan.

I've had a pretty good experience using wanikani. It's nice that it makes you write the answers yourself, gives a summary after each session with success rates etc. but the mnemonics are often terrible (using "conga" to remember かんが, really?) so definitely don't look at those and make up your own.

If someone really has big trouble with nip grammar then I'm at a loss. The rules are quite simple, and immersion takes care of the rest if you keep up with your vocabulary.

I actually second this, I am currently just on Anki with a 2K/6K and I treat Wanikani as a but of casual training. Wanikani has on more than one occasion payed off, by teaching both readings off the bat, which is very nice when I see a compund in Anki. Giving that quick reminder of how it should be read.

Though, I would still reccomend Anki over Wani, just for the fact that it is free. And despite all the bells and whistles Wani, it is essentially the same as Anki but prettier. And while learning can be fun, the reward should't be extrinsic which I feel Wani does unlike Anki.
