second, wanikani vocab cards are useless because they don't actually teach you what the word means. you'd learn more hovering the word for the first time in actual content than you will in months of wanikani.

wow, winter solstice, such a useful word that I see all the time.

what I mean is that it doesn't tell you any of the nuance of the word, and that you barely get an idea of what it actually means for a lot of words. the worst example I found was 欄, where you probably get a completely different idea of the word from wanikani than you do from its actual definition. another was 湧く or 据える, where it only lists the literal meaning when it's much more common for it to be used metaphorically. those aren't the only ones, it's fairly common. but I'm not about to go sift through all that again to make fun of it.

the point is, you'd learn more looking up even the jmdict definition of a word for 2 seconds than bothering with wanikani. you barely learn more in your time with wanikani than I learn looking at the kanji that compose the word and guessing what it means. and have fun learning kanji for a year and still not knowing how to read kanji that didn't make the cut, like 詮, 貌, 嫉妬, etc.

occasionally there is a mnemonic but generally not exactly. as far as recognition goes, it just shows you the radicals and why they're there if there is a reason. like, with 線 the right side is marked phonetic (tells you it's pronounced せん) and the left side is semantic (hints at the meaning of the kanji.) the kanji gets a keyword but the vocab attached to the kanji has jmdict definitions and example sentences for common words.

if you really think you need mnemonics, that's pretty much the only reason you would use wanikani. I don't think it's a good reason, but it's there. personally, I did my kanji study with kanjidamage a while ago now and while it has mnemonics, I hardly used them at all. I think you'll find that mnemonics are mostly a placebo and you don't really need them in most cases, so you can just come up with one if there's a kanji that's giving you serious trouble. recognizing the phonetic components was much more helpful for the majority of kanji. I might have paid attention to the mnemonic like 5 times total.
