33605982 No.33605982 [Reply] [Original]

It's often stated that Youkai and similar supernatural beings are a lot stronger then most humans. What I don't understand is how humanity even survived throw the ages with all these monsters running around. Even the whole "Youkai need human believe to survive" thing could be changed, if Youkai like Yukari are as powerful as they are stated to be. Why didn't humanity get wiped out ?

Yeah but aren't Youkais like Yukari capable of warping reality, can't she simply change that aspect of thier nature to save her race instead of creating a natur reserve . Also I don't think most normal Youkai before the creation of Gensokyo and the rise of the modern era would know/care that they need humans to survive and would simply follow their nature.

Why does Reimu kill the guy who became a youkai when he had no ill intentions at all? Keep in mind several other youkai she lets run around used to be humans like Alice

The only explanation I can think of is the fact that they had gods protection those who worship them. That or there were a lot of Heroes like Heracleas or Achilles aroud at that time since humanity believed they existed but these are only my speculations.

warping reality means jack fucking shit when zero humans exist to fear you. Yukari's existence is hinged on humans surviving and being afraid of her.

It's humans that wear the pants in this relationship, not youkai. Gensokyo is a tiny little island where youkai rule as an exception, everywhere else it's all humanity all the time.

Youkai are the waste byproduct of human thoughts, they can't affect human society on a grand scale because their actions are decided by society to begin with. If you're a night sparrow you blind people, if you're an uwan you make echoes, if you're a dorotabou you protect rice fields. That's not a choice or preference, that's literally all you are. If you lose that nature you straight up die, like with Kyouko and her "yamabiko are dying out because echoes are no longer considered strange" problem.

>> No.33608159

Humans are no match for youkai physically, but youkai are weak to spiritual and symbolic things. Those likely just used to be more commonly known/distributed.

For example, oni are some of the strongest youkai out there, but toss some beans at them and they’ll turn tail and run.

>>33607888
It's the rules, the pre-existing youkai would be in a lot of trouble if the humans in the village could become non-human without consequence, or worse, tear themselves apart from infighting of whether they should abandon humanity or not - Youkai need to be feared by humans.

Him not having ill intentions means nothing, his existence would lead others to come to the same idea and the food source would be threatened and the youkai could get desperate and break the rules if they thought their food was in danger, Yukari couldn't feasibly gap an entire population.
Reimu likely recognised that and figured one villager was worth a lot less than the entire village being fought over.

Gensoyko is a paradise for Youkai, not humans.

Kogasa's situation is probably the closest it gets to perfection for a Youkai, since she can live peacefully among humans while still being true to her Youkai nature and remain friends with other supernatural beings. A fair number of once-humans have powerful alliances, like the girl with the punching cloud. That complicates things.

As for Alice, magicians in general seem to be the sole exception to the ‘humans mustnt become youkai’ rule. If fortune teller had taken the normal path he might’ve been okay, but turning himself into a ghoul sealed his fate.

Far as I know nearly nothing about magicians in touhou’s setting has ever been explained, so I dont know why they’re some sort of exception. The complete lack of info on magicians is low key one of the biggest mysteries in the series, but only for the audience. Everyone in-universe seems to know what the deal with magicians is, or just not care.

In the fairy tale mermaids live for 300 years and when they die they die, while humans live normal human lives but get to join God in heaven when they day. The mermaid falls in love with the prince after anonymously rescuing him, and gets legs, after constant sacrifice and suffering (and if she can get the prince to fall in love with her she'll become a true human with a soul). She meets the prince, and while he's kind to her, he thinks his previous anonymous savior was a different woman, so he marries her. The mermaid continues to suffer but now emotionally on top of physically, but if given the chance to murder the prince and return to being a mermaid if she kills him in his sleep. However, she's unable to do this, and flings herself into the ocean. There, she finds that instead of perishing forever, she's lifted up into the air. For her pure desires and morality she's become an air spirit, who devotes their time to doing good deeds and after a few hundred years can ascend to heaven if she proves virtuous.

I imagine any youkai wanting to become youkai (with pure intentions) are destined for tragedy since that's how those fables go. A youkai with wicked intentions would never want to become human.

There are probably more people who believe in the supernatural in New York alone then there are humans in Gensokyo.

I think that the Outside World has just so many people who don't believe in Youkai/Gods that that in itself neutralizes all the people who believe and goes so far as to hurt supernatural beings living there.

Basically Gensokyo has like + 5.000 believe, the outside world has - 6-7 billion.

Spirited away or just wander into Gensokyo by pure chance? The latter is possible regardless of what you are. A jet made it into Gensokyo for a brief moment simply because it was forgotten(?)

There are beings like Mamizou who can exist outside the barrier just fine, as long as there are some weirdo cryptid theorists out there who believe in them.

Gensokyo isnt just the land of faith, it’s the land of the forgotten and no longer believed in.

Forced to help because they have no choice.
The Olympians are possibly the most entitled little shits out there.
Not even the Titans were like that to my knowledge and their worst case was Chronos.
Humans exist for the small shit they don't want to do.

why stop at just a plain old nuke?
salted nukes (also known as cobalt bombs) would be way more efficient and lethal
