Chinese, by 万-muthafucking-里. Chinese has more phonemes, freer phonotactics, plus tones. All of that collapses in Japanese, so you’re easily looking at thousands of homonyms.

Example: 冠 has two Chinese readings: guān and guàn.

In Japanese, they lose their tones, so that distinction is lost, giving クヮン, then over time, the distinction between クヮン and カン is lost as well.

冠、刊、and 寒 are all just カン in Japanese, but guā/guàn, kān, and hán in Chinese.

In other words, shitloads of characters and compounds which are perfectly distinct in Chinese collapse into the same pronunciation in Japanese.

Feels like I leveled up today! Been doing anki for almost two weeks now and today I correctly guessed the pronunciation of a few words from exposure to the same Kanji in words I'd been previously exposed to!

It was like a shot of happy adrenaline when I guessed correctly the few times today.

For some background, this is with some years of VERY intermittent and lots of starting and restarting RTK and Genki, and not finishing until this year (finished RTK and RTK3, Genki I, and working on Genki II). Also doing my hand created Genki deck, though I will be looking for a general anki vocab deck soon.

Edit: I forgot to ask. Did you notice around when you started anki vocabulary exposure that you actively started recognizing and using learned pronunciation patterns?
