I know this post is 3 months old, but just for further clarification:

There are 4 ways of saying "It is / Is it" in Japan, each used in specific social circumstances.
"Da だ", an informal version used when addressing a person you know well (e.g Zoro when talking to Luffy)
"Desu です", a neutral version. Usually used when talking to strangers.
"Degozaimasu でございます", a formal version used to address people of higher status (e.g Job interviews)

And finally, "De-gozaru でござる", a feudal version of Desu used when you want to sound like a Samurai. Zoro uses this as he is quite literally the closest thing to a Samurai, but the word is used more commonly in the present as a way of acting like an idiot or for comedic effect (An english equivalent would be talking like a badass but then running at even the slightest sight of fear, a.k.a acting like something you aren't)

I do *not* recommend using tools like the lower levels for kanji study. Muscle memory is a very real thing, and it’s important to exploit that.

I’m comfortable with about 7000 characters, so I’m past that point, and now it makes sense for me to use stuff like Anki to organize the shitloads of information necessary to pass level 1.
